Wheeler strikes out 10 in 8 innings to lead Phillies past Padres 4-0
Harper was hit by a pitch on the left foot, walked and lined into an unassisted double play as part of a 0-for-2 night in his first game since June 5. Harper returned from a nearly month-long layoff with
right wrist inflammation
to start at first base and bat third.
Wheeler (8-3) tossed six-hit ball and did not walk a batter in another sterling outing for the NL East leaders.
Padres center fielder Jackson Merrill did his part to keep the game from getting totally out of hand in the third when he reached well over the wall in straightaway center and robbed Max Kepler of a three-run homer.
The rest of the game was all Philadelphia.
If Merrill made the play of game, Bryson Stott was right him behind for the Phillies. After he walked and stole second base, Stott hustled home on Brandon Marsh's grounder to first and scored on a head-first slide for a 2-0 lead. Marsh scored on Trea Turner's infield single to make it 3-0.
Castellanos' solo shot off Padres starter Matt Waldron in the fifth made it 4-0. Waldron (0-1) made his season debut after the knuckleballer spent all season on the injured list with left oblique strain. He walked six in 4 2/3 innings.

With runners on first and second and one out in the fifth, Wheeler got pinch-hitter Trenton Brooks to line into a double play. Brooks hit one to Stott at second base and he flipped the ball to Turner at the bag to complete the inning-ending play.

MIAMI (AP) — The Minnesota Twins reinstated third baseman Royce Lewis from the injured list Tuesday after a 15-game absence because of a recurrence of the hamstring strain that delayed his season debut. Lewis joined the Twins for the start of a three-game series at Miami. He hurt his left hamstring while running out a grounder in the ninth inning of a game on June 13, a less severe strain than the one he suffered late in spring training. That injury sidelined him for seven weeks, costing him the first 35 games of the season. Lewis went 0 for 8 with one walk on a three-game rehab assignment with Triple-A St. Paul. Lewis has played in only 182 regular-season games since making his major league debut in 2022, and this year has been the first time the interruption seems to have affected his production. Lewis is batting just .202 with a .585 OPS and two home runs in 30 games this season. He had 32 straight hitless at-bats from May 19 to June 3. Right before his latest setback, though, he had just gotten in a rhythm by going 9 for 20 with a home run and four RBIs in his last six games. The Twins are 18-12 in games Lewis has played in this season, despite his struggle at the plate, and 22-32 without him. The first overall pick in the 2017 draft was limited to 82 games last season by a severe quadriceps strain he suffered running the bases in the opener and later by a groin injury. The previous two years for Lewis were limited by recoveries from successive ACL surgeries.

Berlusconi family leaving soccer again with sale of relegated Monza to American fund
MILAN (AP) — The Berlusconi family is leaving soccer again with the sale of Monza to American fund Beckett Layne Ventures. Fininvest, the Berlusconi's family holding company, announced the deal in a statement Tuesday. 'The transaction provides for an initial transfer of 80% of the shares by this summer, with the remaining 20% to be transferred by June 2026,' it said. Fininvest purchased Monza in 2018 and oversaw the club's rise from the third division to Serie A. But the club based just outside Milan finished last in the recently concluded Serie A season and was relegated to Serie B. Fininvest was previously controlled by the late Silvio Berlusconi — the three-time Italian premier who died in 2023. Berlusconi owned AC Milan from 1986 to 2017. BLV is paying about 30 million euros ($35 million) for Monza, according to the Gazzetta dello Sport. Financial details of the deal were not announced. ___

Panthers found a way to keep the core together, and Zito says it was player-driven
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Bill Zito looked exhausted Tuesday. The Florida Panthers' hockey operations president and general manager was trying to schedule a fishing trip. He was trying to figure out how the next few weeks will work. He needed a nap, desperately. The good news: He can finally get a bit of a break. The Panthers are running — skating? — it back next season, with all 12 of the forwards that they used in the clinching game of the Stanley Cup Final under contract for 2025-26 and in many cases long beyond. The final moves came Tuesday, when the signings of Brad Marchand and Tomas Nosek became officially official as Florida prepares to try and win a third consecutive title next season. And with that, Zito and the Panthers pulled off a stunning haul: They went into free agency trying to figure out who among the trio of Sam Bennett, Aaron Ekblad and Marchand could fit under the salary cap for next season — and kept them all. It begged the obvious question Tuesday: How did he do this? 'I didn't. It was those guys,' Zito said. 'There's no gray area whatsoever. This is 100% those guys wanting to be part of something that they created. We kind of wax poetic about the team and the community that they've become. And I think this is a great example of what it means to them. It's 100% those men who made that decision that they all wanted to continue to try to win together.' Bennett took an eight-year deal worth $64 million, Ekblad took an eight-year deal worth $48.6 million and Marchand took a six-year deal worth about $32 million. And much in the same way that Zito — who has 10 players, most of the team's biggest names, under contract through at least 2030 — didn't want credit, Ekblad deferred the credit for all of this happening as well. 'It speaks a lot about the organization and everything that they do for us and how bad guys want to play here," Ekblad said. 'Our practice rink, our game rink, the hotels that we stay in on the road, the food that we eat ... the organization does everything for us. It's easy to want to stay here. And then the culture of winning is just a huge draw to guys, right? It's the most important thing. It's why we play the game. And we've all been taken care of extremely well." Bennett, Ekblad and Marchand all could have commanded more on the open market; the NHL's free agency period opened at noon Eastern on Tuesday, or about an hour after Zito met with reporters inside the Panthers' theater at their new practice facility. They chose to stay for less and try to win more. It's a simple formula. 'It was always Florida," said Ekblad, who is now in position to potentially spend the entirety of what could be a nearly two-decade career with the Panthers. 'I don't think you guys understand. Florida is home now.' And that means, when he finally gets to sleep, Zito will sleep well. 'I think they see the players having fun, and enjoying hockey, and they know how hard they work," Zito said. "I think they want to be part of that.' ___
