Mercedes-AMG Teamed Up With a Viral Art Collective on Weird Car-Inspired Furniture

Miami Herald17-05-2025
To many bona fide car enthusiasts around the world, Mercedes-Benz's high-performance division, AMG, is primarily known for powerful and fast versions of vehicles from the three-pointed star. However, its latest collaboration explores a creative junction that transcends its reputation for sheer speed.
As part of its efforts for the 2025 NYCxDesign Festival, AMG was recruited to work with the provocative and controversial artist collective MSCHF (pronounced as 'mischief) on a collection of conceptual avant-garde art pieces.
Titled "MSCHF x AMG: Not for Automotive Use," the Brooklyn-based artists collaborated with the high-performance brand on a collection of pieces that incorporate aesthetic elements and actual components from Mercedes-AMG cars into the design of some modern furniture pieces, including chairs, lamps, and even trash bins. But if you were thinking something akin to IKEA, Herman Miller, or even the home collections of Bentley or Bugatti, think again. These pieces are more akin to sculptures that belong in the Whitney or MoMA than any multi-million-dollar high-rise penthouse.
The "Not for Automotive Use" collection consists of nine individual items, including:
Seatbelt Shelf - an aluminum 5-tier shelf stabilized by five double-ended sets of seatbelts in AMG red and yellow, which can be independently clipped and unclipped to maintain even tension.Seatbelt Light - A lamp made out of an aluminum frame and an AMG seatbelt. Buckling the seatbelt turns on the lamp and unbuckling it and allowing the seatbelt to spool back turns the light off.Seatbelt Chair - A steel-framed chair where AMG seatbelts are the back and bottom cushions. A single solid red seatbelt wraps around the chair frame and is clipped at the bottom of the chair.
Seatbelt Rack - Similar to the Seatbelt Shelf, this aluminum clothes rack is stabilized by five double-ended sets of AMG red and yellow seatbelts. These pair with hangers made from the seatbacks of AMG Performance seats.Grille Grill - A charcoal grille with a grilling surface shaped like a Mercedes-AMG GT radiator grille.Seatbelt Table - A dining table with an aluminum tabletop on a tubular steel base, which is detailed with a double-ended AMG seatbelt.
Headlight Couch - A 70s-styled microfiber loungeback couch designed to mimic the shape of the front end of a Mercedes-AMG GT. For the extra touch, it incorporates functional AMG GT headlights with working turn signals.Wheel Fan - A floor fan built into an actual AMG Interlagos wheel. It is also styled with yellow AMG seatbelts, which help it stick onto its milled anodized aluminum base.Headrest Chair - A task chair that incorporates three actual AMG headrests slotted onto a tubular steel frame. Inspired by a roll cage, Mercedes and MSCHF say that this piece is supportive of the thighs and lower back for a comfortable posture.
MSCHF and Mercedes-AMG claim that the pieces in the collection pay tribute to the Italian Radical Design counterculture movement of the 1960s. In this collection, Mercedes-AMG's cars are reimagined as everyday objects, and some of the pieces are inspired by the late Milanese designer Achille Castiglioni, who used tractor and bicycle seating in his designs.
The pieces in this collection will be on display at MSCHF's workshop in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, from May 15-17, marking the first time that the collective has opened its doors to the public. Accompanying this collection is a line of limited-edition apparel, including t-shirts, sweatshirts, and work pants printed with stylized high-res scans of AMG vehicle components and the AMG logo, which are available for purchase on the MSCHF website.
Buyers can purchase the furniture in "very limited quantities" on an exclusive, made-to-order basis. Prices are unknown, but according to MSCHF, all pieces will be available to order until 5/31/2025 and will take 18-36 weeks to make.
I was first made aware of this collection through a social media campaign starring storied YouTuber Casey Neistat, a filmmaker who has partnered with Mercedes-Benz and MSCHF in the past. Notably, in 2022, Neistat participated in an MSCHF experiment in which a thousand $20 keys gained access to one shared car.
MSCHF's provocative art pieces are designed for maximum virality and controversy. They were the brainchildren behind stunts like Lil Nas X's "Satan shoes," a perfume that smells like WD-40, the infamous Big Red Boots, as well as Tax Heaven 3000, an anime dating simulation video game that doubles as Turbotax-esque federal income tax return filing software.
Overall, I think the link between AMG and MSCHF is a very creative endeavour, especially given MSCHF's reputation for ruffling social, moral, and legal feathers in the past. However, given this, I think some fat-walleted AMG enthusiasts will jump at the opportunity to own one or a few of these pieces.

Steps the FIA will take to avoid a repeat of Mercedes' 2014 F1 dominance

Next year, both chassis and power unit regulations will undergo sweeping changes. Several technical directors in the F1 paddock have called it the biggest overhaul of the past 50 years. In addition to concerns from drivers about the racing in general, some fear it could pave the way for long-term dominance by a single manufacturer. Memories go back to 2014, when Mercedes' engine proved significantly superior to the rest of the field and the factory team went on to claim every world title through to 2020. Why the FIA doesn't fear a repeat of Mercedes' 2014 dominance The FIA, however, is confident that history won't repeat itself in F1's new era starting in 2026. 'I don't think that we are going to have a situation where a single manufacturer has such a huge advantage as was the case in 2014,' Nikolas Tombazis told The FIA's single-seater director believes the new engine formula is less complex, despite the substantial increase in electrical power: 'The engines are still not as simple as we would have liked. We would have liked to go further, but we had a lot of resistance against simplifying the regulations more. So there are things that we would have liked to be even simpler, but they are still simpler than the current generation of engines. They don't have the MGU-H, and there are a few things that have tighter limits, so we don't think the gaps will be as big as in 2014.' Back then, the MGU-H proved a major performance differentiator - and a very costly one. For both of those reasons it will disappear in 2026, a change that should provide newcomers with a more level playing field while also reducing development costs. How will the concessions' system work? That said, it cannot be ruled out that one manufacturer may still get out of the blocks significantly better than the rest, especially since the FIA acknowledges not all power unit manufacturers are equally transparent or willing to share data about their new engines. Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes W05, leads Nico Rosberg, Mercedes W05, Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull Racing RB10 Renault, Fernando Alonso, Ferrari F14T, Daniel Ricciardo, Red Bull Racing RB10 Renault, Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari F14T, Nico Hulkenberg, Force India VJM07 Mercedes, and Kevin Magnussen, McLaren MP4-29 Mercedes, at the start But even if one manufacturer dominates next year, the FIA has learned from 2014. The new regulations include a safety net, allowing underperforming brands to close the gap through so-called concessions. 'We do have newcomers, and it is always a risk at the start of a new cycle that there is some divergence initially,' Tombazis said. 'Additionally, we have a cost gap for the PU manufacturers now.' It means that manufacturers who are behind cannot simply throw unlimited money at their engine projects. To still offer them possibilities to catch up, the FIA has included a new system into the 2026 regulations. 'For that reason, there is a concept called ADUO, which is an acronym for Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities,' Tombazis explained. 'This concept has been the product of a lot of work. It was already there from day one of the regulations, but in the last few months more detail has been put into it to define exactly how that is going to operate.' This, of course, raises the key question: how does it work? 'Essentially every five, six races there will be an average performance measured for each PU manufacturer. Those who are below a certain level, and depending on how much below they are, will get that benefit accumulating over the year. That benefit would translate into three things: one is additional development money, some more dyno hours and the possibility to make a new homologation of the engine. So people who are behind will have the opportunity to speed up and catch up.' The 2026 technical regulations specify that this assessment will be made after the first five race weekends each season: 'Over the first five Competitions of each Championship Season in the 2026-2030 period, the FIA will monitor the performance of the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) part of all the Power Units supplied by each PU Manufacturer to its customer Competitors. For each ICE supplied by the PU Manufacturers, an average power will be calculated. The methodology to calculate this power can be found in the Appendix to the Regulations. Any PU Manufacturer whose ICE power is more than 3% below that of the highest ICE power recorded amongst all the PU Manufacturers will be granted Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities.' These extra opportunities relate to a table in Appendix 3 of the technical regulations. A special ADUO column lists which components of the ICE may still be improved if a manufacturer is granted the special status by the FIA. Several of these components are otherwise frozen for development over a specific period of time, but with ADUO status, they may still be modified to close the gap. Nikolas Tombazis, FIA Single Seater Director FIA rejects 'absolutely any suggestion' of Balance of Performance The system is designed to prevent long-term dominance, but Tombazis emphasises that it should not be seen as a Balance of Performance, as is used in series like the World Endurance Championship. 'I want to stress that I completely refute any comment about that being a Balance of Performance or anything like that, because first of all, the regulations are exactly the same for everyone. It's not like we are giving them more cubic capacity, more fuel or whatever. 'Secondly, if there was no cost cap, they would throw a lot of money at it. When Honda were behind in 2016, 2017, for a certain period they had to spend a lot more money to catch up. With a cost cap the risk is that you would never be able to do that, and that you would be behind eternally. You would just be humiliated for a whole regulation cycle, and clearly we don't want that. We don't think that would be fair, and I have to say that PU manufacturers have been extremely collaborative on this topic.' Finally, the FIA is working on a safety net for manufacturers who suffer serious reliability issues — something that cannot be ruled out at the start of a new era. 'There is an additional initiative which addresses the situation where a PU manufacturer has huge reliability issues to start with. Imagine somebody who blows up an engine each race weekend and each engine costs a lot of money. They suddenly find that they are eating their cost cap with blown engines. They have to reduce the development to stay below the cost cap, and you can imagine that would be an awful situation. 'So we've got some initiatives, which are going through the same phase of discussion now, and will hopefully be approved quite soon, whereby once you use more than a certain number of engines, you start having a certain cost cap relief. Read Also: What's got drivers so agitated about "strange" 2026 F1 cars? 'Your engines, once you exceed that number, cost very little from a cost cap point of view. Not in terms of real money, of course, they still cost the same unfortunately, but it means that we protect them from a situation where somebody is in an awful position and has no way to react under the cost cap. That would be really unfortunate.' Combined with the slightly simpler power unit formula, this approach should avoid a repeat of 2014 and has to keep the F1 field competitive - at least on the engine side. Mitsubishi to launch first mass-market 'gallery dealership' in Nashville

Mitsubishi Motors North America plans to open the first retail sales gallery dealership for a mass-market brand in the Nashville area early next year. As it relates to the auto industry, retail sales gallery dealerships are most commonly found in malls. These storefronts only have a select few display vehicles onsite and are a marketing tool for brands to have a presence in high traffic areas. While retail sales gallery dealerships are typically exclusive for luxury cars, according to a release, Mitsubishi will open the first of its kind dealership in Antioch by early 2026. Poised to break ground in August, the gallery dealership will be located at 4230 Century Farms Terrace Suite 106. The storefront will become an extension of the Murfreesboro-based dealership City Auto Mitsubishi. 'I often receive letters from customers saying they saw our car on the road, that they love the design and love the value proposition we offer, but have no Mitsubishi dealer partner nearby to make a purchase,' MMNA president and CEO Mark Chaffin said in a release. 'In my mind, we are underrepresented with a presence in about one-third of the new car markets across the U.S.' Located off Exit 60 on Interstate 24, the gallery dealership will join Century Farms — a more than 300-acre development home to Tanger Outlet Mall and the Nashville Soccer Club's training facility. The area is also poised to welcome In-N-Out, Chick-fil-A, Whataburger and four new hotels. The move is part of Mitsubishi Motors Momentum 2030, the brand's five-year push for growth. 'Mitsubishi Motors is on the cusp of a full brand-wide reinvention in the United States, with our Momentum 2030 roadmap charting our path forwards,' Chaffin said. 'One of our strengths is that we are both small and nimble, enabling us to make fast decisions and pivot as necessary. But our small dealer-network across the U.S. limits our ability to grow our share and sales volume.' 'Our gallery dealership program is key to not only achieve that growth in volume, but also to raise the experience to better meet shoppers' expectations in a modern, busy retail world,' Chaffin said. Along with revamping its retail sales model, the business plan will also prioritize a path to electrification and an expanded product lineup. Additionally, the MMNA announced a new hybrid powertrain for the 2026 Outlander, an updated 2026 Outlander Plug-in Hybrid and an all-new battery EV by summer 2026.
