Kota Kinabalu: It was a hat-trick of wins for Angie Yan Jia Chi as the Sabahan lass successfully defended her U23 World title in the wai kru event at the 2025 World Muaythai Championships held in Antalya, Turkey on Saturday. In the final, she proved her superiority with technical precision as she scored 9.60 points to edge her Filipina opponent Rhichein Yosorez by a margin of 0.1 points to take the title for the third time in a row. Last year, she won her second U23 title at the IFMA Senior World Championship held in Greece preceded by her maiden victory in Bangkok, Thailand a year earlier. She had previously also won two titles at the IFMA World Cup in Turkey and the World Combat Games in Riyadh in 2023. Her mother Sally Kuan, who has always been very supportive in her training, was present to accompany Angie at the championship to see her lifting the crown. She said her daughter's success in winning a gold medal for Malaysia proved the dedication and high spirit of the country's young athletes in the traditional art of Muaythai on the world stage. She also expressed her gratitude to Sabah Muaythai Association president Haji Nazri Abd Razak and the president of the Malaysian Muaythai Association Dato' Shahnaz Azmi for their support and joint efforts to promote the sport in the country. Meanwhile, Nazri congratulated Angie for the success and said her achievement proved that their developing programme is bearing fruit and hoped it will motivate more youth in the state to follow in her footsteps. 'Our programme has reached phase three in five years and with five world titles produced, we are certain many youth in Sabah will like to join us as pelapis (back-up) to follow the success story,' he said. Sabah's golfer wins Kelantan women's title

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's Charlayne Chong emerged victorious in the women's category at the 48th Kelantan Amateur Open Golf Championship, held at the Kelantan Golf and Country Club from July 26–28. The 23-year-old golfer, who hails from Kota Kinabalu and is currently a student at the Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) National Golf Academy, posted a three-day total of 225 to clinch the title. She edged out Amberly Zaira Zamri, who finished second with a score of 227, while Nur Maisara Sa'ad settled for third with 233. Reflecting on her win, Charlayne credited her mental resilience as a crucial factor in navigating the demanding course. 'The course was decent, though managing it definitely pushed me outside my comfort zone,' she said. 'One key takeaway I learned this week is the importance of internal control over my thoughts, emotions, and everything that fuels unnecessary stress and doubt.' Despite the win, Charlayne acknowledged that there is still room for improvement, particularly in strengthening her mental game. 'I know there's still a lot more work to be done, especially in terms of improving my mental strength. But overall, it was a great experience to compete here,' she added. World Bicycle Day on MPS calendar

SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) plans to include the World Bicycle Day Ride as part of its official annual calendar to promote inclusivity and a sustainable lifestyle. Its President Walter Kenson said cycling is a unifying activity that transcends age, background and ability. It is open to everyone, including local leaders and both state and federal civil servants in the District. 'This is the spirit we want to cultivate in Sandakan. Organising casual cycling events such as this is in line with MPS's aspiration to develop the District into an eco-friendly, healthy and sustainable city. 'Cycling is more than just a leisure activity. It is a lifestyle that benefits both physical and mental health, while also helping to reduce pollution and urban traffic congestion,' he said. Walter believes that such programmes can strengthen community ties, raise awareness on green mobility, and encourage a culture of active living among Sandakan residents. He said this when officiating the District-level World Bicycle Day 2025 programme at the Piazza, Harbour Mall on Saturday. His speech was delivered by his deputy, Wilson Thomas. Also present were Tanjong Papat Assemblyman Datuk Frankie Poon Ming Fung, MPS Secretary and Jetama Water Sdn Bhd Chairman Liau Fui Fui, and Sandakan Cycling Club (SCC) President Mohd Soffian Eting. MPS is among the first local authorities in Sabah to respond to the call and take the lead in initiating a World Bicycle Day ride in collaboration with Sandakan's cycling community. This year's event was held in partnership with SCC and several other agencies. Speaking to the media, Soffian welcomed the proposal to make the event a fixed item in MPS's annual calendar, saying the club is always ready to collaborate with the council on future programmes. 'Such events also help promote tourism in Sandakan through sports and recreation,' he said. A total of 180 participants from Sandakan, Felda Sahabat Lahad Datu, Kinabatangan, Beluran and Telupid took part in the 12km ride. Special recognition was given during the event to the oldest participant (64 years old), the youngest (12), and a participant in the disabled category. Malaysia's bid to get Iman for SEA Games hinges on ONE's nod
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Muay Thai Association are pulling out all the stops to assemble their strongest squad for the SEA Games in Thailand this December – and that includes rising star Iman Aliff Rakib ( pic ). Iman, under a US$100,000 contract with ONE Championship, is restricted from competing in other events. However, the association will submit a formal request to ONE, hoping he can answer the national call.
