On right track: Railway Protection Force gets first-ever woman DG; who is Sonali Mishra?

NEW DELHI: The
(RPF) has appointed senior IPS officer Sonali Mishra as its new Director General. This makes her the first woman to head the 143-year-old central security force. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet cleared her appointment and she will hold the post until her superannuation on October 31, 2026.

Mishra is a 1993-batch officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre. In her career spanning more than 30 years, she has held key roles in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Border Security Force (BSF) and also served with the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Kosovo.
Prior to this post, she served as Additional Director General of Police (Selection/Recruitment) in Madhya Pradesh, along with charge of the Police Training and Research Institute and the Police Academy in Bhopal.
Her appointment is being seen as a significant milestone for the RPF, which is tasked with safeguarding railway property, ensuring passenger safety and preventing crime across India's vast railway network.
According to officials, she is expected to focus on strengthening the force's capabilities in technology adoption and tackling organised crimes such as
. She is also likely to prioritise measures aimed at improving the safety of vulnerable passengers.
Mishra has been conferred with the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service and the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in the past, in recognition of her contributions to the force.
On assuming charge, she expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and reaffirmed her commitment to upholding the values of vigilance, courage and service that define the RPF's motto 'Yasho Labhasva'.

The DGP also expressed hope that this achievement would energise and motivate everyone to strive for even greater excellence in the future.A Haryana Police spokesperson informed that two officers have been awarded the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service, while 11 others have been conferred with the Police Medal for Meritorious Police Commissioner Shibas Kabiraj and IG SVACB Kuldeep Singh have been honoured with the others received the Police Medal for Meritorious Service, including DSP Traffic Panipat Suresh Kumar; ACP Faridabad Rajesh Kumar; Inspector Rishi Pal, In-charge Economic Cell Ambala; Inspector Harkesh Kumar, Sunaria Rohtak; Inspector Mahabir Singh, IRB Bhondsi; Inspector Joginder Singh, HAP Madhuban; Inspector Dharmender, HSENB Panchkula; Inspector Rajesh Kumar, IT Cell Dial 112 Panchkula; Sub-Inspector Ashok Kumar, Rohtak; Sub-Inspector Yashpal Singh, Faridabad; and Sub-Inspector Sohan Lal, posted at the Chief Minister's UT Chandigarh Director General of Police Dr Sagar Preet Hooda was awarded the President's Medal for Distinguished Service for his contributions during his tenure in Delhi. Sub-Inspector Rajender Kumar and Head Constable Vikram of Chandigarh Police were conferred the Medal for Meritorious addition, 18 personnel of Chandigarh Police were honoured with the Administrator's Police Medal for Distinguished or Meritorious recipients of the Administrator's Police Medal for Distinguished Service included ASI/LR Kawaljeet Singh, ASI/LR Malvinder Singh, ASI/LR Munish Kumar, and HC Sunil Mehta. Two Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel of South Central Railway have been bestowed with prestigious President's Police Medal on the occasion of 79th Independence Day - for Outstanding and Meritorious Services. The awardees are - Divisional Security Commissioner, RPF/ Guntur, Gollamudi Madhusudana Rao, and Assistant Security Commissioner, RPF/Renigunta, K. Rajagopala Reddy. Mr. Rao joined RPF as a Sub-Inspector in 1989 and over the last 36 years, rose to his present rank serving with distinction in various divisions. He was also awarded the Indian Police Medal during Republic Day 2016, DG/RPF Insignia in 2014, General Manager's Medal and 16 DRM Awards. Mr. Reddy too has been earlier decorated with Indian Police Medal in 2012 (Republic Day), All India Railway Minister's Medals for Best Investigation on two occasions, DG insignia, GM's medals and several other awards for detecting several difficult cases. He also represented India in UN Peacekeeping Missions in Kosovo and South Sudan as Police Advisor for about two years - upon which he was also awarded with the UN Peacekeeping Medals. GM Sanjay Kumar Srivastava congratulated the awardees, as per a press release on Thursday.

Nine IAF, four Army personnel get Vir Chakra for role in Operation Sindoor

NEW DELHI: In a rare instance of Gallantry Awards being conferred in peacetime, 15 Vir Chakras, war-time gallantry awards, were conferred by President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday on armed forces personnel for their roles in Operation Sindoor launched to avenge the killing of 26 civilians in Pahalgam. A total of 127 Gallantry Awards and 40 Distinguished Service awards were given to the Armed Forces and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) personnel on the eve of 79th Independence Day. The list of personnel awarded for Operation Sindoor included 13 from the armed forces -- nine from the IAF and four from the Army –who were conferred the Vir Chakra, the third-highest wartime gallantry award. Two recipients were from the Ministry of Home Affairs: Sub Inspector Mohd Imteyaj and Constable Deepak Chingakham. There was also a rare list of the seven top-level armed forces officers awarded the Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal for their role in Operation Sindoor. This award is given for exceptional operational planning, coordination and execution. President conferred 4 Kirti Chakras which are peacetime equivalents of the Mahavir Chakras of the war time. The other Gallantry Awards includes 15 Vir Chakras; 16 Shaurya Chakras; 2 Bar to Sena Medals (Gallantry). When the award is conferred more than once it is termed as Bar to the award. The list also includes 58 Sena Medals (Gallantry), 6 Nao Sena Medals (Gallantry) and 26 Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry). The 40 Distinguished Service awards include 7 SarvottamYudh Seva Medals, 9 Uttam Yudh Seva Medals and 24 Yudh Seva Medals. The President has also approved 290 Mention-in-Despatches, including 115 personnel of the Army, 5 of the Navy, 167 of the Air Force and 3 of the Border Roads Development Board (BRDB). The President's awards also include three Tatrakshak Medals (TM), Indian Coast Guard personnel in recognition of their acts of conspicuous gallantry. Two more TMs were given for exceptional devotion to duty and meritorious service.
