‘Bulldozers instead of houses': AAP, Cong criticise BJP after eviction in Delhi's Madrasi Camp

New Delhi, Jun 2 (PTI) The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress on Monday sharply criticised the Delhi BJP government, claiming 'nearly 800 slum homes were demolished in Madrasi Camp, just a day after Chief Minister Rekha Gupta publicly assured that no slums would be touched'.
'Madrasi Camp has existed for 60 years. Before (the Delhi assembly) elections, the BJP leaders played carrom (board) with children and dined in the slums. Today, they have demolished those very homes,' Bharadwaj said.
Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav also condemned the demolition drive, calling it 'shocking and saddening', a statement said.
Yadav alleged that the Rekha Gupta government adopted a pick-and-choose policy. While allotting alternate housing, it left 155 families without shelter despite extreme weather conditions, he said, calling it petty politics with the lives of the poor.
The Congress leader further alleged that the BJP's handling of the eviction stands in stark contrast to its manifesto promises, which pledged to uplift JJ cluster residents through schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.
He claimed that the eviction was carried out inhumanly, disrupting children's education and livelihoods, even as those allotted flats in distant Narela still lacked basic services like electricity, water and transportation, the statement added.
According to a government notice, of the approximately 370 families that lived in the settlement, 189 were found eligible for relocation to flats in Narela. Eviction notices were served last month and many families were left without shelter after the demolition on June 1.
The May 30 government notice informed the residents that transport trucks would be available on May 31 and June 1 to assist in shifting. Bulldozers arrived early June 1, backed by police.
The Tamil Nadu government acknowledged that the demolition followed court orders and it offered support to any displaced residents from the state wishing to return home.
Bharadwaj also claimed that similar demolitions are ongoing in Wazirpur and criticised the media for remaining silent. 'This is not just policy failure, it's betrayal,' he said.

Excise policy case: No objection if former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal's passport is renewed, says court
A Delhi court Wednesday granted a no-objection certificate (NOC) to former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to renew his passport. The AAP chief is an accused in the corruption and money laundering cases linked to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam. 'In such circumstances, applications preferred by Arvind Kejriwal for renewal of his passport is allowed and this court has 'no objection' if the passport of the applicant, namely, Arvind Kejriwal is renewed for 10 years as per rules,' said Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh of Rouse Avenue Court in his June 4 order. While the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had opposed the request, submitting that as per norms, renewal permission for five years should be granted, the Enforcement Directorate did not give a formal reply and stated orally that the renewal of the passport should not be granted for 10 years. The CBI, which is investigating the corruption case in the matter, was represented in court by Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) and Senior Advocate D P Singh. The ED, which is investigating the money laundering case, was represented by SPPs N K Matta and Simon Benjamin, along with advocate Faizan. Kejriwal, whose passport had expired in 2018, had sought a 10-year renewal. He was represented in court by advocate Mudit Jain. 'It is, however, made clear that the order of this court shall not in any manner fetter the discretion of passport authorities in grant or refusal of the renewal of passport under the Indian Passports Act and relevant rules. The 'no objection' granted vide this order shall remain in force for three months from today, within which the applicant may get his passport renewed,' the court said. 'It goes without saying that the present order is not granting any permission to the applicant to travel abroad, and if he ever desires to travel abroad for any purpose, he shall have to file an appropriate application seeking such permission,' it added. As per the central agencies, Kejriwal's role in the excise policy 'scam' allegedly involved receiving 'bribe money' from the 'South Group' (business persons from South India) in exchange for granting favours to them when the now-scrapped policy was being drafted. The CBI had alleged that Kejriwal ensured Rs 90 lakh from the 'bribe money' would be given to each of the 40 AAP candidates during the 2022 Goa Assembly polls. Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on March 21, 2024. On June 26, 2024, he was formally arrested by the CBI. He was granted interim bail by the Supreme Court in the ED money laundering case on July 12, 2024. The Supreme Court later granted him bail in the CBI case on September 13, 2024.

Opp says Govt scared, Pahalgam will be in focus in monsoon session too
A day after INDIA bloc parties wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding a special session of Parliament to discuss the developments following the terror attack in Pahalgam, the Opposition parties Wednesday hit out at the government for announcing the dates of the Monsoon session 'so much in advance' and alleged that it was done to dilute the demand for the special session. Barring AAP and NCP (SP) led by Sharad Pawar, all other INDIA bloc parties had signed the letter. The AAP is learnt to have sent a separate letter raising the same demand. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju Wednesday announced that the Monsoon session of the Parliament will commence on July 21 and conclude on August 12. Criticising the government action, Congress communication in-charge Jairam Ramesh said that 'usually the dates of the Parliament session are announced a few days in advance'. 'But this time, the dates were announced 47 days before the session began — this has never happened before,' Ramesh said. He alleged that the decision was taken by the government only to avoid the demand of the India alliance to convene an urgent special session of Parliament. 'Serious issues including the failure of the government to bring to justice the terrorists responsible for the Pahalgam attack, impact of Operation Sindoor and the situation that arose thereafter and blatant politicisation of Operation Sindoor should be discussed in Parliament,' the Congress MP said. 'All these issues, which are of supreme national interest, will remain the focus of discussion during the monsoon session as well. After six weeks, the Prime Minister will have to answer some difficult questions,' said Ramesh. Samajwadi Party MP Javed Ali Khan said the government 'wants to dilute the Opposition's demand for a special session'. 'This is unprecedented,' he said. TMC Parliamentary Leader in Rajya Sabha Derek O'Brien said 'the government is scared'. 'Usually, a Parliament session is announced around 19 days ahead. This time, they announced it 47 days ahead. So scared,' said O'Brien. AIMIM chief and MP Asadduddin Owaisi said that during the Monsoon session, there must be a debate on the Pahalgam attack, the alleged security lapse, and those accountable for it. AAP Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh said that the Monsoon session is a regular session, and the government was not doing any favours by announcing it now.
