Mamata slams Centre for observing June 25 as Constitution Murder Day, calls it mockery of democracy
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday (June 18, 2025) criticised the BJP-led Union government's decision to observe June 25 as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas', calling it a mockery of democracy and the constitution.
She also accused the saffron party of consistently attacking democratic institutions and undermining the very Constitution it now claims to uphold.

Announcing that her government would not observe the 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' (Constitution Murder Day), Banerjee said, "This is nothing but hypocrisy.
Those who don't respect the Constitution are now talking about upholding its morality. It is a mockery.'
The Centre had declared in 2024 that June 25 would be marked annually as 'Constitution Murder Day' to protest the imposition of Emergency in 1975, widely regarded as a dark phase in the history of Indian democracy.
'We can observe 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' every day, given the way the BJP is trying to change and undermine the Constitution,' said Ms. Banerjee, also the TMC supremo.
Slamming the BJP over what she termed its undemocratic practices, Banerjee asked whether the "toppling" of democratically elected governments in Maharashtra and Bihar by the BJP was not an attack on the Constitution.
Accusing the saffron party of weakening democratic checks and balances, she alleged that the BJP has ensured that all the pillars of democracy, be it the Election Commission or the media, are compromised.
'We don't want to hear lectures on democracy from those who are bulldozing democracy and the federal structure (of the country) every day,' Ms. Banerjee added.
She also targeted the Centre over its alleged economic mismanagement through decisions such as 'demonetisation'.
'The manner in which they destroyed the country's economy in the name of demonetisation, November 8 should also be observed as 'Economy Destruction Day',' she said.
In a dig at the central leadership, Banerjee questioned, 'Who is the Prime Minister of the country, Narendra Modi or Amit Shah? It looks like Amit Shah is running the country.'

Uncertain about any pre-poll alliance for the upcoming civic elections, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena is going all out to make its presence felt in Pune city, where it has lost its sheen over the past few years, with only one of the 10 former corporators of the undivided party joining the Maharashtra deputy chief minister's faction. After the Shiv Sena split led to the distribution of workers between the Shinde-led party and the Shiv Sena (UBT) of Uddhav Thackeray three years ago, all the former corporators except for Nana Bhangire preferred to continue with Thackeray. A few of the nine leaders later joined the BJP, instead of any of the two Senas. Also, the Shinde-led Sena struggled to make its presence felt in the Maharashtra Assembly elections. The Shiv Sena is all set to induct Congress leader Sonali Marne and other potential candidates for civic polls from other parties. 'I have decided to join the Shiv Sena as the Congress is not fulfilling its responsibility. The Congress is no more active,' said Marne. Dhangekar said there would soon be a party rally in the city, where Eknath Shinde would induct Marne and other leaders. Earlier, the Shiv Sena (UBT) inducted former MNS leader Vasant More to revive the party in Pune. The Opposition party has recently held protest rallies in the city against the ruling Mahayuti. ‘Fought single-handedly': Kerala CM defends CPI-M leader after remarks on Emergency sparks row
Communist Party of India (Marxist) state secretary M V Govindan's remarks about the outfit joining hands with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh during the Emergency has put the ruling party on the back foot a day before by-election in Nilambur assembly seat, prompting Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to defend the statement. Nilambur will vote Thursday. Referring to Govindan's remarks, Vijayan said that 'the CPI (M) had fought against the Emergency single-handedly'. This comes after the Congress claimed Govindan's statement was 'a passionate appeal to its one-time friend RSS seeking its help in the by-election. The Opposition party stepped up its campaign that 'unholy nexus between CPI(M) and BJP' exists in the bypoll. Addressing the media Wednesday evening, Vijayan said: 'There was no relation of any sort between the CPI(M) and RSS during the Emergency. When political parties which fought against the Emergency, formed Janata Party as a larger alliance, Jan Sangh (political wing of RSS till 1977) also merged in that party. However, the CPI(M) had not merged into the Janata Party. The CPI(M) had fought on its own against the Emergency'. In a TV interview Tuesday, Govindan said: 'RSS is communal…during the Emergency we had joined hands with them. It is a reality. We are not afraid of telling the truth'. On Wednesday, a day after the remark kicked up a storm, Govindan issued a clarification saying that he had spoken of a situation 'when the entire country stood together against Emergency'. 'Various political streams move together to oppose the Emergency. CPI(M) had never entered into an alliance with RSS,' he said. But the remarks gave ammunition to the Congress, which called it a last-minute attempt to woo Bharatiya Janata Party's votes in Nilambur. While the BJP has handpicked Mohan George, a local Christian leader and a former leader of regional Christina party Kerala Congress, as the National Democratic Alliance candidate in Nilambur, Akhil Bharat Hindu Maha Sabha has declared its support for CPI(M) candidate M Swaraj. To win back the Hindu votes, the CPI(M) has been highlighting Jamaat-e-Islami's support for Congress candidate Aryadan Shoukath. In his remarks, the Congress-led Opposition Leader V D Satheesan claimed the CPI(M) 'was trying to create Islamophobia'. 'This appeal on the eve of voting is meant to get Sangh Parivar votes. The CPI(M)-BJP affair is evident in the by-election. BJP had been reluctant to field a candidate. CPI(M) has no right to question Jamaat-e-Islami support for Congress. Suspend BJP's Bhopal MP from Lok Sabha for recent ‘communal remarks': CPI(M) to President
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Wednesday (June 18, 2025) wrote to President Draupadi Murmu and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, seeking action against Alok Sharma, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Bhopal, over his allegedly communal remarks. The letter, written by CPI (M) State secretary Jaswinder Singh, accuses Mr. Sharma of using 'derogatory slurs' against the Muslim community in his recent statements, and demands that his Parliament membership be dissolved and an inquiry be launched against him. Earlier this month, Mr. Sharma stirred a controversy by claiming that he was compiling a list of gyms employing Muslim trainers in the city, as he accused them of being involved in 'love jihad'. Claims of 'love jihad' 'There are many gyms in Bhopal and we are also preparing a list where the trainers are allegedly Muslims. There should be women trainers too. We are making a list and will be submitting it to the police. The police will do their work, the law will do its job. In Madhya Pradesh, there is Dr. Mohan Yadav's government and no one has the permission to indulge in love jihad or land jihad. The law will take stringent action against such people,' Mr. Sharma had said, speaking to reporters. Mr. Sharma has also referred to the Muslim community using derogatory terms such as 'beard-topi' and claimed that the growing Muslim population in Bhopal is a threat to the Hindu community, according to Mr. Singh's letter. Mr. Sharma's comments had come after Bajrang Dal members had visited gyms across the city looking for trainers from the Muslim community. They even gave a complaint to the local police, claiming that these trainers were indulging in 'love jihad'. The controversy originally erupted following the arrest of an Indore shooting coach, Mohsin Khan, accused of raping and molesting a minor girl. Violating Constitution In his letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker, Mr. Singh claimed that Mr. Sharma's remarks violate Articles 15 and 21 of the Constitution, and disturb social harmony. Mr. Sharma, however, denied the charges that his remarks were communally charged and said that he only advocated for police verification of gym trainers. 'People come to us with their problems and such cases of men hiding their real identities have come to light in Bhopal, Indore and other cities. What if the person has hidden a criminal record to get the job? Girls have also taken their lives due to these incidents,' he said, speaking to The Hindu. 'I also said that criminals don't belong to any particular community and I stand by my statement. I will also raise the issue in the Lok Sabha soon,' Mr. Sharma added. Meanwhile, local activist and advocate Deepak Bundele, who helped draft the complaint, said that they are also considering approaching the Supreme Court if no action is taken against Mr. Sharma soon. Mr. Sharma is a former Mayor of Bhopal and is believed to be a close aide of Union Minister and former State Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
