Kavitha calls for rail roko on July 17 in support of 42 pc BC quota
Hyderabad: Telangana Jagruthi President Kalvakuntla Kavitha has announced a state-wide Rail Roko protest on July 17, demanding the Central government to approve the bills passed by Telangana Assembly for providing 42 per cent reservations to Backward Classes (BCs) in local bodies, education and employment.
Addressing a BC Round Table meeting organised jointly by Telangana Jagruthi and United Phule Front in Medak, on Tuesday, Kavitha emphasised the need to exert pressure on the Central government to approve the bills. 'This Rail Roko will not just be a protest, but a declaration of Telangana BCs' strength to the rulers in Delhi.
We will take All BC organizations and leaders together in this protest', MLC Kavitha stated, warning that the protest would send a strong message to the BJP government at centre.
The BRS MLC criticized the Congress-led state government, alleging it was conspiring to conduct local body elections without implementing the proposed 42 per cent reservations for BCs. 'We will not allow elections without these reservations.
The Congress government has merely sent the bills to the Centre and washed its hands off the responsibility,' she said, questioning why the state government is not intensifying its efforts to ensure the President's approval.

K Kavitha, Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader and daughter of Telangana's former chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao, is set to face a political litmus test on July 17. Amid an unabating feud with her brother and the party's working president, K T Rama Rao, Kavitha has called a rail roko in Hyderabad on that day to demand the implementation of 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BC) in local body elections. She has a formidable ally in BC leader R Krishnaiah, a BJP Rajya Sabha MP. Sources close to Krishnaiah said, 'K Kavitha was the first to reach out from her party to seek a meeting. She convinced (Krishnaiah) to give her a listen even though they are from two different parties.' Kavitha is learnt to have reminded Krishnaiah of the support he gave the BRS during the agitation for Telangana's statehood. Sources close to Kavitha said she is of the opinion that the BRS should regain its stature as a party that starts an agitation whenever there is a need for it. Her brother, widely known as KTR, however, prefers to be in 'governance mode', the sources said. In a media briefing earlier this month, Kavitha had said, 'Isn't BC reservation a matter that the BRS leadership is concerned with? From Telangana Jagruthi, we plan to take up agitation for the BCs.' While Kavitha has won part of the battle with Krishnaiah's support, her stature in Telangana politics will be defined by the success of her rail roko call, which brings up memories of the agitation that the BRS, led by her father KCR, had taken up for the cause of a Telangana state between 2009 and 2014. During this time, the BRS was known as a party born of a people's movement. 'We hope Kavitha can resurrect a similar sentiment among people. She is focusing on a major voting bloc, the Backward Classes,' said a leader close to her. According to a survey conducted by the state government, BCs account for at least 56% of Telangana's population. However, 42% reservation for the BC would breach the 50% reservation cap set by the Supreme Court and would need the Centre's nod for implementation. The Congress government in Telangana, under Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, had passed a Bill recommending implementation of 42% reservation for BCs in education, employment and local body elections in the state. While this Bill got the assent of the Governor, it is pending approval at the President's office. BRS's protest is therefore a nudge to the Centre to implement 42% BC reservations, sources close to Kavitha said. 'Other than passing the Bill and visiting Delhi to meet the Congress High Command, Revanth Reddy has not done much to convince the Centre to allow the breach of the 50% reservation cap,' a BRS source said. The rail roko will also bring to the fore the leaders who support Kavitha. 'Clearly, there is a division in the BRS leadership from the top. We need to see how many leaders of the BRS come out in support of the rail roko and how many want to work with Kavitha on the ground,' a BRS leader said.

New Delhi: A fresh controversy erupted on Friday after Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale called for a review of the words 'socialist' and 'secular' in the Preamble of the Indian Constitution. The remarks, made at an event in Delhi late Thursday night, drew support from Shiv Sena while Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) criticised it on Friday. Hosabale, speaking at the Ambedkar International Centre, made a strong pitch to consider whether the words socialist and secular, which were added to the Preamble by the Congress government during the Emergency, should remain. He further said: "The words 'socialist' and 'secular' were added to the Preamble during the Emergency. No attempt was made to remove them later. There should be a discussion on whether they should remain. I say this in a building named after Babasaheb Ambedkar, whose original Constitution did not include these terms in the Preamble." "The days of the Emergency also witnessed large-scale forced sterilisation," Hosabale added. Hosabale's remarks came after the BJP-led Central government on Wednesday observed June 25 as the 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas', marking the 50th anniversary of the imposition of the Emergency. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the imposition of the Emergency as one of the darkest chapters in India's democratic history, saying the Congress not only violated the spirit of the Constitution but placed "democracy under arrest".

Karnataka's fake news bill: Rs 10 lakh fine, 7-year jail for disrespecting sanatan symbols, promoting superstition
Agencies The state government's draft proposal—the Karnataka Misinformation and Fake News (Prohibition) Bill, 2025—placed before the cabinet last week, has raised concern among stakeholders. According to the bill, the government looks to criminalise and punish those who spread misinformation. The draft bill says that companies and social media platforms may also be held liable for fake news shared through their the draft bill, social media users found guilty can face two to five years in jail. If one posts fake news on social media platforms, they can be imprisoned for up to seven years and fined up to Rs 10 lakh. Abetment of such offences will also attract a two-year jail term, the 11-page draft read. The draft includes formulating a state 'fake news regulatory authority' tasked with a broad mandate to monitor and regulate the content disseminated on social media platforms. 'Prohibit publication of content amounting to disrespect of Sanatan symbols and beliefs on social media platforms. Prohibit publication of content promoting superstition,' the draft bill accessed by ET read. Government's takePriyank Kharge, state IT-BT minister, told ET that the document is an opinion of a few individuals in the law department and will be thoroughly discussed by the home and IT departments before moving forward. Defending the Congress government's move, Kharge said, "We are not deciding whether it is misinformation or fake news. We are getting professionals to do that. We would love it if even the Editors Guild of India or the Press Council of India, or anybody else, wants to be a part of it."He added that the government is not trying to change any policy. 'We're just trying to connect the dots that already exist and make a bill out of it." The minister emphasised that even Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that misinformation creates havoc and is a threat to democracy. The new authority's core functions would include ensuring a complete ban on the spread of fake news. It also talks about content that is abusive, obscene, anti-feminist, or insulting to the dignity of women.
