Chandigarh Police amp up security on PU campus 1 month before student body polls

Hindustan Times16 hours ago
Even as Panjab University (PU) has yet to announce the schedule for the annual student council elections, police presence has already been stepped up on the campus. Chandigarh Police have set up three checkposts at Panjab University ahead of the campus polls. (Keshav Singh/HT)
For the first time, officials said, three police nakas have been set up in PU to maintain vigil — following recent violence at GGDSD College, Sector 32 — even before the declaration of the election date or model code of conduct.
The checkposts have been stationed at the PU Administration Block, near Ankur School and on the road towards University Institute Legal Studies (UILS). According to a police official from the Sector 11 police station, around 100 cops have been already deployed on the campus.
'We are keeping a close watch on vehicle movement to ensure no weapons are brought into PU. Boots of cars are being checked inside the campus, apart from routine checks at the three entry gates,' the official said.
PU dean student welfare (DSW) Amit Chauhan said, 'Police are acting on their own intelligence inputs. The situation remains tense, especially after the murder of a UIET student on the South Campus in March. The two recent stabbing incidents at GGDSD College have also put authorities on alert.'
DSW (Women) Namita Gupta added that PU will strictly enforce Lyngdoh Committee guidelines this year to maintain discipline, and police officials have been sensitised about them.
PU also plans to hold an all-party meeting this week to further discuss implementation of prohibitory orders in the university along the lines of Section 189 (unlawful assembly) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), as per PU officials.
Anticipating friction within various student parties, officials will also meet the deputy commissioner.
As per officials, there are factions forming in various major student parties like the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), National Students' Union of India (NSUI) and Association of Students for Alternative Politics (ASAP), formerly Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti, among others.
Students, however, are peeved with the increased police deployment.
Ashmeet Singh, core committee member of Sath party, pointed out how PU had turned into a 'police cantonment'.
'When PU has its own security force, why have police been deployed on the campus? The code of conduct also hasn't been implemented yet. It seems PU doesn't have much faith in its own security force,' he said.
PU to start issuing stickers for students from tomorrow
As PU plans to crack down on the entry of outsiders, the varsity will start issuing vehicle stickers for vehicles of students from Wednesday onwards. As per DSW Amit Chauhan, the vehicle details for most departments have already been collected and in around a week's time, the stickers will be distributed at all departments.

Brother duo from Bihar caught in Surat for getting Aadhaar forged to get accommodation, land job

Surat police have nabbed a man and his younger brother — both natives of Bihar — for allegedly procuring Aadhaar cards with a fake name to get a house and land a job at a diamond factory in Surat. While the elder brother was produced before a court on Tuesday and sent to a two-day police remand, the younger one, a juvenile, was sent to a children's remand home in Katargam. Special Operations Group officials had on Monday evening reached a flat on the third floor of Shiv Heritage Apartment in Surat's Sagrampura area, acting on a tip-off about the accused. They found two persons, who identified themselves as Pradeep Maurya and Pankaj Maurya and claimed that they hailed from Bihar's Katihar district. The duo said they were working at a diamond factory in Katargam. However, they soon confessed to having forged Aadhaar cards. The elder brother was identified as Mohammed Afridi Wajidali (25). The younger brother is 17-year-old, officers said. The accused said they had been facing issues while they were searching for an accommodation. They said that when they found a house in Sagrampura, they were allegedly told that the owner only rents it out to people from the Hindu community. The accused then got Aadhaar cards made with fake Hindu names and started to live in the flat on rent. They also allegedly used the same Aadhaar card to land a job at the factory, officers said.. Police arrested Wajidali under BNS sections 319 (cheating by personation), 336(2) (forgery), 336(3)(forgery with the intent to cheat), 338 (forgery of valuable security, wills and related documents), 340 (using forged documents as genuine). Talking to The Indian Express, Athwalines police inspector H K Solanki said, 'We have arrested the elder brother and the younger one was sent to a children's remand home. They hail from Bihar and were staying in Surat and working at a diamond unit for the past one year. They had got documents forged to get a place to stay and a job in the city. We are trying to dig out more information. We are also trying to ascertain if they had any other motive.'

Puppy killed during attack on owner at Rajajipuram fuel stn

Lucknow: A man was brutally assaulted by a group of 7–8 individuals at a petrol pump in Rajajipuram, during which his two-month-old puppy was fatally injured. The attack occurred around 11:30 am on Aug 1, but the case came to light after a video of the assault went viral late Monday, prompting the victim to lodge a formal complaint at Talkatora police station. According to the FIR, the victim — Phooldeep Srivastava — was on his way to a veterinary clinic along with his friend Akshat and his ailing puppy when he stopped at the Tempo Stand petrol pump to refuel. It was there that a group of unidentified assailants confronted and began attacking him without provocation. Phooldeep said in his written complaint that while he was still seated on his motorcycle, the attackers began hitting him with sticks and fists. When his relative tried to intervene, one of the attackers — identified as Abhijeet Singh — allegedly struck Phooldeep on the head with a metal rod, causing serious bleeding and injuries. Amid the chaos, the attackers also allegedly manhandled the relative and trampled the puppy, named 'Hickey', leading to its death. The entire incident was captured by CCTV cameras installed at the petrol pump. "Based on the complaint, an FIR has been registered under Sections 191(2), 115(2), and 325 of BNS, 2023, and Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960," said Talkatora SHO Kuldeep Dubey. "We are analysing the CCTV footage and efforts are on to identify and arrest all accused." The FIR names Abhijeet Singh as the prime accused, along with 7–8 unidentified individuals who remain absconding. |
