Make sports a career, CM urges youth
Describing Odisha as a State having endless possibilities, Majhi said his government has been giving much importance to sports and therefore spending a lot for developing sports infrastructure across the State. The State has been constructing stadiums in all 314 blocks of Odisha and for the purpose, Rs 4,124 crore has been earmarked to be spent in four years, he said. With facilities available in blocks and gram panchayat levels, the Chief Minister said the village youths can also get opportunities and exhibit their talent in sports.
'They can easily make sports as a career, earn name, fame along with money,' Majhi said, adding that apart from cricket, hockey and football, the State is also promoting Kabaddi and other games. Encouraging the youth, Majhi said that one should know his or her own talent and work for its development. He said of the 4.5 crore population of Odisha, around 1.70 crore people are in the age group of 15-35 years.
'When more than one and a half crore youth become successful, then Odisha will become the growth engine of India, developed as the best State in the country,' he said. Highlighting the industrialisation of the State, he said 13 lakh employment opportunities will be created when an investment of Rs 17 lakh crore is grounded in the State. The investment intents have come through Make In Odisha Conclave and the State government has not wasted a single moment to implement the proposals, the Chief Minister said.
Majhi said his government, during one year, has already provided government jobs to 28,346 youths and committed to give jobs to 1.5 lakh youths in five years. The Chief Minister said the State has set a goal of becoming $500 billion economy by 2036 and $1.5 trillion economy by 2047. Therefore, the youths will have a key role in achieving this goal of Odisha, he said.
On this occasion, Majhi laid the foundation stone for various development projects which include those for irrigation and road widening. He asked officials to prepare a revised detailed project report for the development of Maa Tara Tarini temple. The Chief Minister said the State will provide for a world-class industrial training institute at Polsara. Attacking the previous BJD regime, the Chief Minister said the BJP government, within one year, has already provided 11.25 reservations for the students belonging to the Socially and Economically Backward Class (SEBC) category. 'The previous BJD government failed to give justice to SEBCs in 24 years, while we have done it in one year,' Majhi claimed.
Steel and Mines Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena, Sports and Youth Services Minister Suryabanshi Suraj and others attended the programme.

ED took up 5,892 PMLA cases since 2015, got convictions of 15: Govt to Rajya Sabha
The Finance Ministry has informed Rajya Sabha that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) took up 5,892 cases under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) since 2015 and secured the conviction of 15 people from these cases during the period. Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said in a written reply: 'In these cases, 1,398 Prosecution Complaints (PCs), including 353 Supplementary PCs have been filed before the respective Special Courts under PMLA. Out of which, so far, the Special Courts have framed charges in 300 Prosecution Complaints including 66 Supplementary PCs and the PMLA Special Courts have convicted 15 persons in eight conviction orders in these cases till June 30.' The minister said that the ED has filed closure reports before the special PMLA court in 49 of the total cases. In an annual report 2024-25, ED Director Rahul Navin said: 'In the early years of administering PMLA, most cases pertained to drug-related offences. Till March 2014, only 1,883 Enforcement Case Information Reports (ECIRs) had been registered — averaging fewer than 200 annually — and just 84 Prosecution Complaints (PCs) were filed, with assets under attachment only Rs 5,171.32 crore.' 'Between April 2014 and March 2024, there has been a significant scale-up in enforcement activity, with 5,113 PMLA investigations initiated — averaging 511 ECIRs annually — and 1,332 PCs filed. I am pleased to report that building on this momentum, in FY- 2024-25, 775 new PMLA investigations were launched, 333 PCs were filed, and notably, 34 individuals were convicted,' he said.

SC hearing next week, Sports City builders start repaying their dues
Noida: Following Noida Authority's notices to developers, some builders involved in the Noida Sports City projects have initiated payments to start clearing their outstanding dues. Notably, a consortium partner in the Sector 150 Sports City project led by Lotus Green Constructions has deposited Rs 80 crore. Officials said that several other consortium partners in the Sector 150 Sports City project have expressed willingness to pay and are likely to follow suit soon. In March, the Authority had issued notices directing developers to settle long-pending dues within a month, in compliance with a high court order issued in Feb. These dues include pending premiums, interest on premiums, penalty interest, lease rent, time extension fees, and the 64.7% additional compensation amount. An official said that 62 notices were issued to various developers across the four Sports City projects in the city. These projects collectively owe Rs 11,000 crore in dues to the Authority. In a set of rulings on Feb 24 this year, the Allahabad High Court directed the Authority to issue notices to all stakeholders, demanding payment of outstanding dues, including interest and penalties. It warned that failure to comply would result in the automatic cancellation of allotments. Exposing what it described as a "dirty nexus" between real estate developers and Noida Authority officials, the high court had ordered investigations by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) into three of four Sports City projects, citing massive financial and planning irregularities. A division bench comprising Justices Mahesh Chandra Tripathi and Prashant Kumar passed 10 separate judgments detailing violations of land use norms, misappropriation of public land, financial mismanagement, and a systematic failure to construct the promised sports infrastructure. In response, many developers approached the Supreme Court, challenging the High Court's verdict. While the apex court did not stay the CBI and ED investigations, it restrained the agencies from taking any coercive action against the developers for the time being. The next round of hearings is scheduled for the first week of Aug. To oversee compliance, the Authority constituted a committee, led by an additional CEO, to pursue recoveries, enforce court-mandated timelines, and monitor the development of the sports infrastructure. The court's scrutiny has focused on Sports City projects in Sectors 78, 79, and 101, developed by Xanadu Estate, and two major projects in Sector 150, developed by Logix Infra Developers and Lotus Greens Constructions. The fourth project is led by ATS Homes in Sector 152. Developers were found to have violated project norms by prioritising residential and commercial development over the mandated sports facilities, which were supposed to occupy 70% of the allotted land. The Xanadu and Logix projects are both currently under insolvency proceedings, which the court criticised as strategic attempts to evade liabilities. First conceptualised in 2004 and launched between 2010 and 2016, the Sports City projects were planned across 798 acres in Noida, promising world-class sports infrastructure, including three golf courses and an international cricket stadium. However, developers focused instead on residential and commercial construction, failing to deliver the promised sports infrastructure.

PLA court disposes 726 cases; To hold 30-day campaign
Dharwad: Not many people are aware that the has set up Permanent Lok Adalat Courts at six destinations across the state. During this campaign, the judiciary department in association with District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) will organise awareness programmes at five places in each taluk, stated PLA Dharwad court chairman Nagarajappa Kuradakar. Speaking to mediapersons, he stated that all these years, the sitting sessions judge was given additional responsibility of handling the cases and disposing them. However, recognising that this was time-consuming, as the judges sat only once a week to hear cases and the cases continued to pile up, a permanent judge has been appointed to these courts, he informed. The Dharwad PLA has its jurisdiction over seven districts--Ballari, Koppal, Davanagere, Dharwad, Gadag, Uttar Kannada and Haveri and cases related to public utility services can be filed here afresh, he stated. In the last one year, the court has disposed of as many as 726 cases and 479 cases are pending. The verdict delivered here through conciliation cannot be challenged in any other civil courts, the judge said. Another advantage here is that no court fee is charged on the petitioner and the cases are solved amicably. The PLA courts are not bound by CPC (Civil Procedure Code) and Evidence Act, he added. Cases wherein there are discrepencies in public utility services up to Rs one crore compensation can be filed in this court, said Judge Kuradakar. Lok Adalat aims at resolving the pending cases through mediation. Different litigations like the civil cases, criminal cases, motor vehicle accidents, family disputes, labour compensation and others that could be resolved through mediation will be taken up at the Lok Adalats. Arrangements have also been made to resolve the pre-litigation incidents related to the banks, labour act and water and electricity supply at the Lok Adalats.
