TPCC chief slams Amit Shah's remarks on Telangana Caste Survey
Mahesh Kumar Goud also rebutted Shah's claim that the BJP government initiated the caste census on its own volition. He said it was Rahul Gandhi's consistent demand during the Bharat Jodo Yatra that forced the Centre to respond. 'Where were JP Nadda and Rajnath Singh when Rahul Gandhi was vocally advocating for a caste census? Why didn't they support it then?' he questioned.
He further asserted that unlike the BJP, which is only beginning the exercise, the Congress government in Telangana has already started delivering on the data collected. 'The State has announced 42% reservations for Backward Classes in the local body elections,' he said.
Goud demanded that Amit Shah and the Union government immediately clear the legislative bills passed by the Telangana Assembly to enhance the quota to 42% for BCs. 'If the Centre is sincere about social justice, let it support what Telangana has already initiated on the ground by adding the legislation's in the ninth schedule of the constitutions,' he said.

No more fixed highway targets, states can prioritise projects
New Delhi: In a significant shift in strategy, the ministry of road transport and highways has done away with fixed targets for states and will now collaborate with them on floating targets for the construction of national highways, expressways and greenfield corridors passing through states. "The idea is to get projects off the ground to avoid delays that often result in huge time and cost overrun," the official added. Live Events This is expected to give enough flexibility to states to pick up projects which can be quickly started since the majority of the basic requirements are in place. "It is a win-win for both Centre as well as states. There will be a bouquet of roads offered to states for development and states will be allowed to proceed with projects where they see some progress," an industry expert said, adding this will help fast-track completion of pending projects also. While construction of national highways is primarily the responsibility of the ministry of road transport and highway, which works through its autonomous body the National Highways Authority of India, states assist the central government with land acquisition, rehabilitation of project-affected people and obtaining various clearances. The government has set the target of constructing 10,000 km of highways in 2025-26, lower than the 10,421 km target set for 2024-25. Even the monetisation target for the current financial year has been scaled down to ₹30,000 crore compared to the target of ₹39,000 crore set for the preceding year. Besides, the ministry of road transport and highways allocates funds for state governments and union territories (UTs) for development and maintenance of state roads under the Central Road & Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) scheme. The ministry has allocated ₹9,030 crore under the scheme in 2024-25.

Chennai: Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin on Sunday flayed AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami saying that he has turned into a full-fledged 'sanghi'. Telangana quota politics: Congress stakes claim on backward class mandate
Increased reservations for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) have been a significant issue for the Congress, with its leader, Rahul Gandhi, frequently citing the Telangana government's approach and vowing to challenge the Supreme Court's 50 percent quota ceiling. The Telangana government passed bills in March to ensure 42 percent reservation for OBCs in education, employment, and local bodies. However, while awaiting the President's nod, the State Cabinet last week also approved an amendment to the Telangana Panchayat Raj Act, providing 42 percent reservations for OBCs in local bodies. There are reasons for it. Obvious, of course, is the Congress policy. The other is the recent high court directive to the State government to complete local polls within three months. The question now is whether enforcing the quota, most likely through an ordinance, will get the Governor's approval. Constitutional experts believe otherwise, given the apex court verdicts in the Krishna Murthy vs. Union of India and the Indra Sawhney & Others vs. Union of India cases. The Cabinet's likely push for an ordinance before the local elections signals urgency and a clear political play. At the same time, the state has demonstrated due diligence by establishing a commission to study political backwardness and conducting a survey.
