KENINGAU: A man was killed while a college student suffered injuries in an accident involving their cars – a Proton Iswara and a Proton Saga - along Jalan Sook-Keningau, Tuesday. Keningau District Police Chief Supt Yampil Garai identified the deceased as a 44-year-old travelling in the Iswara. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The injured Saga driver, a 22-year-old college student, was sent to the Keningau Hospital for treatment following the 6am accident. Preliminary investigations showed the Iswara was travelling from Sook to Keningau, while the Saga was heading in the opposite direction. The Saga driver lost control of his vehicle while negotiating a bend, resulting in the collision with the Iswara on the opposite lane. Sook Fire and Rescue Station Chief Faizal Ahmad said they received an emergency call at 6.05am. Meanwhile, in KIMANIS, a 38-year-old woman sustained serious injuries when her Honda City collided with a Toyota Vios in Kampung Oyong, Tuesday. Kimanis Fire and Rescue Station Chief Nelson Ponji said a 6.51am distress call prompted a team to the scene. Firefighters had to extricate the woman who was trapped inside the City, while two others in the Vios managed to exit their vehicle before rescuers arrived. The duo, in their 30s, sustained slight injuries. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? At least five cases of scams involving sale of Singapore National Day parade tickets since July 1
Victims only realised that they had been duped when they did not receive the NDP tickets, or when scammers became uncontactable. - ST FILE SINGAPORE: At least five cases of e-commerce scams involving the sale of National Day Parade (NDP) tickets have been reported since July 1. In these cases, with total losses amounting to about S$250, victims encountered listings of ticket sales via platforms such as Telegram and Facebook, said the police on July 31. When the victims expressed interest to purchase the tickets, they were directed to make payment via PayNow. The victims realised that they had been duped only when they did not receive the tickets, or when scammers became uncontactable. NDP tickets are not for sale, but are instead distributed for free via a balloting system on Singpass. Re-selling of the tickets is strictly prohibited, and action will be taken against those caught scalping or using the tickets for fraudulent purposes, the NDP executive committee has said. Tickets that are obtained via unauthorised channels will be rendered void, and those holding such tickets will be denied entry to the venue, the police added. The NDP in 2025, which celebrates Singapore's 60th birthday, will be held at the Padang on Aug 9. E-commerce was the top scam type in Singapore in 2024, with 11,665 cases reported and at least $17.5 million lost. Members of the public are encouraged to verify the legitimacy of sales listings before making purchases, and to report suspicious cases promptly. To learn more about scams, they can visit or call the ScamShield hotline on 1799. - The Straits Times/ANN

Mustapha denies link between wife, student's death
Published on: Thursday, July 31, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 31, 2025 Text Size: Mustapha denies claims linking his wife to the death of Zara (inset). KOTA KINABALU: Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud has firmly denied claims linking his wife to the recent death of a Form One student, Zara Qairina Mahathir. He described the allegation made by Kota Bharu MP Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan as baseless and unfair, particularly as his wife retired from public service last November. Mustapha clarified that his wife, Rosnih Nasir, served as principal of SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha Limauan in Papar from March 20-Nov 22, 2024, and has had no involvement with the school since. He stressed that the tragic incident involving Zara occurred in mid-July this year, nearly eight months after his wife's retirement. Mustapha extended heartfelt condolences to Zara's family and urged all parties to refrain from politicising the tragedy while allowing police investigations to proceed. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
