Karnataka police to organise event against drug abuse and trafficking on June 26
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 24 (ANI): Karnataka State Police and Bengaluru City Police will be jointly organising an event on the occasion of 'International Day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking on June 26, at the Kanteerava stadium in Bengaluru, said city's Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh on Tuesday
'On June 26, 2025, at 11:30 AM, the Karnataka State Police and Bengaluru City Police will jointly organise the 'International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking' at Kanteerava Stadium,' the statement from the commissioner said.
Karnataka home minister G Parameshwara will inaugurate the event, and Shivajinagar Assembly Constituency MLA Rizwan Arshad will preside over the function.
On the same day, HM Parameshwara will demonstrate the destruction of seized narcotic substances, launch a QR code, and administer an oath against drug abuse, the official statement read.
The Director General and Inspector General of Police, Karnataka, M A Saleem, IPS, along with other senior officers, dignitaries, experts, and a large number of school and college students, will participate in the event.
On June 22, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) organised various events to commemorate 'Nasha Mukt Bharat Pakhwada,' in line with the UN resolution to observe June 26 as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
In Visakhapatnam, collaborating with the EAGLE and Decathlon, successfully organised a Cyclothon today as part of the ongoing campaign.
The Cyclothon was flagged off by Pankaj Kumar Dwivedi, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and the event was coordinated by Rajan Kumar, Superintendent, NCB Visakhapatnam, S Ramesh, Inspector EAGLE and Mrs. Kalyani, Inspector EAGLE.
Over 100 cyclists from diverse backgrounds took part in the event, raising awareness and spreading the powerful message: Say Yes to Life, No to Drugs.' The participants pedalled through designated city routes, symbolising unity and a collective stand against the menace of drug abuse.
On December 7, 1987, through a UN resolution, the General Assembly decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse. EAGLE and police officers urge students to stay away from drugs
Officers of the Elite Anti-Narcotic Group for Law Enforcement (EAGLE) has asked the students and the youth to stay away from drugs and narcotics. The EAGLE officers, in association with NTR District Commissionerate police, have organised an awareness drive against drugs as part of 'Nasha Mukt Bharat' on the theme 'Breaking the Chains – Prevention, Treatment and Recovery for All', here on Tuesday. Speaking on the occasion, EAGLE head and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ake Ravi Krishna has asked the students to cooperate with the officers in making Andhra Pradesh a drug-free State. 'EAGLE is planning awareness drives across the State to prevent drug smuggling and consumption. Police and the EAGLE are making efforts to break the chains to check drug peddling,' Mr. Ravi Krishna said. EAGLE Superintendent of Police K. Nagesh Babu, Deputy Commissioner of Police K.G.V. Anti-drug affidavits will soon become mandatory for students: Bindu
Higher education institutions will soon insist on sworn affidavits from students to affirm their commitment against drug use. The declarations, which will also be applicable for freshly admitted first-year students, will have to be co-signed by their parents or guardians. These will be mandated as part of an action plan formulated by the Higher Education Department as part of its efforts to intensify its 'Bodhapoornima' awareness programme aimed at combating substance abuse. A slew of State-wide events will be organised in connection with the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking that will be observed on June 26. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Higher Education Minister R. Bindu said anti-drug pledges will be administered across all higher education institutions as part of the observance. The State-level observance will be inaugurated by the Minister at the Government College for Women, Thiruvananthapuram. Later in the day, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will formally launch the State-wide campaign to mark the beginning of a year-long anti-drug initiative in college campuses across Kerala. All institutions have been instructed to prepare master plans for a drug-free campus, Dr. Bindu said. ASAAD (Agents for Social Awareness against Drugs) Sena, a volunteer force formed under National Service Scheme (NSS), will lead awareness efforts in campuses. Vimukthi clubs will also be formed in all campuses in association with the Excise Department. Prior to the campaign launch, a training programme for nodal officers will be held on Wednesday. The event will also include a declaration of 99 out of 101 polytechnic colleges as 'green campuses' under the Haritha Keralam Mission.

"Quicker the ceasefire is done, the better it is," says J-K CM Omar Abdullah on Israel-Iran ceasefire
Gulmarg (Jammu and Kashmir), [India], June 24 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said that 'the quicker the ceasefire is done, the better it is,' after US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. Abdullah expressed relief over the move, highlighting the heavy destruction caused during the 11-day conflict. He also expressed concern for Indian students stranded due to the crisis and hoped their evacuation would be completed soon. Speaking to the reporters, Omar Abdullah said, 'The quicker the ceasefire is done, the better it is. It has been 11 days. There has been massive destruction in these 11 days. We would want the ceasefire to come into effect at the earliest, and it continues to be in effect. A major cause of concern for us was that our students had to be brought back. Flights faced difficulties because the airspace was shut. But we hope that a large batch of students would come back today, and perhaps after that the evacuation process would be complete.' The conflict between Israel and Iran started on June 13 when the former launched a massive airstrike on Iranian military and nuclear sites, codenamed 'Operation Rising Lion'. In retaliation, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) initiated a large-scale drone and missile campaign called 'Operation True Promise 3', targeting Israeli fighter jet fuel production facilities and energy supply centres. Tensions escalated further after the US conducted precision airstrikes early Sunday morning on three key Iranian nuclear facilities under 'Operation Midnight Hammer.' Iran retaliated by launching multiple missiles at US military installations in Qatar and Iraq, including the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar--the largest US military base in the region. Abdullah further added that there was no local involvement in the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people. He said all the attackers were from outside, and two locals arrested by the NIA were possibly forced to help them. He added that the investigation is ongoing and a chargesheet will be filed soon. 'The biggest thing is that there was no local involvement. Those who shot bullets and killed 26 people were all from outside. Now, under an investigation by the NIA, two people have been arrested who helped these people. NIA has perhaps also said that these people were forced to help. They provided food and other things, but they were forced to do so. Let the investigation go on. NIA will then file a chargesheet,' Abdullah added. Earlier, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had gathered a substantial body of evidence regarding the identities of terrorists involved in the Pahalgam terror attack case, stated a release. The evidence gathered includes eyewitness accounts from victims, video footage, technical evidence, and sketches released by the Jammu and Kashmir Police. All evidence is being carefully analysed, and no conclusions have been derived as of now. Identities and further details will be made public at an appropriate time. (ANI)
