Deadpool creator cuts ties with Marvel after Deadpool & Wolverine frustrations

Yahoo07-02-2025

Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld has cut ties with Marvel after expressing disappointment with his alleged treatment at the premiere of the latest film.
The artist and writer is the brains behind the foul-mouthed anti-hero, and has a working relationship with the comic book publishers lasting more than 30 years.
But he felt sidelined at the New York premiere of Deadpool & Wolverine, the first Deadpool film to be released since Disney acquired Fox, and has opened up about his perceived experience.
According to Liefeld, he felt ignored by Disney bosses, including Marvel Studios head Kevin Fiege, at the July 2024 event and was upset to discover he and his family had not been invited to the premiere afterparty.
Speaking on his podcast Robservations , Liefeld claimed: 'It was meant to embarrass, diminish, defeat me.
'At some point, you go, 'I've received the message, and the message is clear.''
Liefeld, who receives large revenue streams for the character he created in 1991, revealed that, one month before the film's release, he requested more involvement with the marketing and promotion.
He also wanted a special credit different to the standard one given to comic book creators at the end of the film – noting that his request stemmed from Marvel's decision to give Roy Thomas a Wolverine co-creator status alongside Len Wein and John Romita, Sr.
He wrote in the email: 'Marvel's treatment of creators has never been their strength. Without the worlds, the characters and the concepts that we create – and in this specific case, the world of Deadpool – there are no films to shoot. No blockbusters to distribute. … I am not the easy button at Staples. I am the human imagination behind it all.'
Liefeld claimed that his response did not get received in the way he was after, tweeting: 'My reps were screamed at today 'We are NOT Fox!' Tell me about it. Also hung up on.'
When the status of a third Deadpool film was unclear, the comic book creator, who became one of Marvel's most lucrative publishers in the 1990s, previously expressed the belief that Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds 'should be steering the ship and just completely handed the reins' to the franchise.
The Independent has contacted Disney for comment.

‘NCIS: Hawai'i' Alum Jason Antoon Shares Clip Of Canceled Show's Vacant Studio Lot

A year after NCIS: Hawai'i ended its three-season run on CBS, the state's film and TV industry continues to suffer a decline in business. Jason Antoon, who played cyber intelligence specialist Ernie Malik on the police procedural spin-off, recently shared a video of the series' vacant and overgrown Hollywood Film Studio, where shows like Lost (2004-'10), Hawaii Five-0 (2010-'20) and Magnum P.I. (2018-'24) also filmed. More from Deadline 'NCIS Hawai'i' Cast Joins Together On The Beach To Celebrate Series 'Rescue HI-Surf' Canceled By Fox After One Season '9-1-1' Eyes Hawaii As Setting For Potential New Spinoff On ABC 'Hawaii Film Studios – Empty and full of weeds,' wrote Antoon, sharing the clip Friday on X. Hawaii is an expensive location that is harder to fit into continuously trimmed TV budgets, especially in linear TV. Cost was among the factors for CBS' decision to cancel NCIS: Hawai'i after three seasons, despite being the #12 most watched non-sports program on broadcast, averaging 7.8 million linear viewers and 10M multi-platform viewers (Live+35). After the cancelation last April, Antoon wrote on Instagram, 'This business is brutal and makes no sense. But we had soooo much fun. Love you all and mahalo.' Hawaii Film Studios – Empty and full of weeds. #NCISHawaii #MagnumPI #Hawaii50 #Lost 😢 — Jason Antoon (@jasonantoon) June 7, 2025 The actor's latest post comes after Fox's Rescue HI-Surf, which also filmed in the Aloha State, was canceled after one season last month. Although CEO Rob Wade said the reason for the decision 'certainly wasn't the locale or the budget,' filming in Hawaii made it one of the network's more expensive dramas, coming in at close to $4 million per episode. Meanwhile, Hawaii was passed over as the locale for the next 9-1-1 spin-off, which is instead filming in Nashville, starring Chris O'Donnell and premiering this fall on ABC. On Friday, Gov. Josh Green, M.D. released an intent-to-veto list, which includes HB796, a bill that would sunset tax credits after five years. 'This bill would have a significant long-term impact on income tax credits across a variety of industries, including film and television, research, and renewable energy,' said Gov. Green of the veto. 'These tax credits are critical to supporting economic development and diversification, particularly within growing and emerging sectors. Categorically sunsetting income tax credits will not only disincentivize future investors from doing business in Hawai'i, but will destabilize existing businesses that currently rely upon these tax credits. 'Real Housewives of Atlanta' star Brit Eady sues Bravo over explicit photo Show Caption Hide Caption Phaedra Parks returning to Real Housewives of Atlanta Phaedra Parks is returning to Real Housewives of Atlanta after being gone for 6 seasons. Fox - 5 Atlanta Brit Eady is taking Bravo to court over the explicit photo incident that prompted Kenya Moore's exit from "The Real Housewives of Atlanta." Eady has filed a $20 million lawsuit against Bravo, NBC and the production companies Truly Original and Endemol Shine North America, accusing the defendants of defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, false light, sexual harassment and hostile work environment. USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Bravo, NBCUniversal and Eady for comment. The lawsuit centers around an incident featured in an April episode of the reality show in which Moore revealed explicit photos, supposedly of Eady, on poster boards. The moment resulted in Moore being removed from the show, and the episode ended with a disclaimer that "based on Kenya's behavior, the decision was made to cease filming with her this season." 'Real Housewives of Atlanta': Reality show airs Kenya Moore's explicit photo incident that led to exit Eady says that the photos were not of her but that the episode falsely suggested they were. "The manner in which the episode was aired falsely yet unmistakably implied that the graphic sexual photograph presented by the cast member depicted (Eady)," the lawsuit said. "On information and belief, defendants knew that the photograph did not depict (Eady), or, at the least, were reckless or grossly negligent in failing to learn that the photograph did not depict (Eady). The lawsuit also alleged that the network refused to show Eady the photo before the episode aired. She accused the defendants of contributing to a "hostile work environment" and subjecting her to "unwelcome, offensive, and sexualized behavior and comments based on her gender by requiring her to continue working in an environment in which she had been subject to a gendered attack, creating an inferior condition or privilege of employment because of her gender." The suit calls for the episode to be removed from public platforms. Kenya Moore suspended indefinitely: She's off 'Real Housewives' amid 'revenge porn' allegations The same day that Eady's lawsuit was filed, Moore confirmed on X that she would not be taking part in a "Real Housewives of Atlanta" reunion taping happening on June 5. "Please know I take full accountability for my actions and deeply apologize to all those affected including Brittney, the cast, crew, guests and viewers," she said. "I look forward to seeing you all back on Bravo soon." Contributing: Taijuan Moorman

Miley Cyrus Talks Growing Past ‘Hannah Montana' and Hiding Her Drug Purchases From Accountant

Miley Cyrus opened up about growing past Hannah Montana, the role that made her famous, and how she hid her drug purchases from her accountant in a new podcast. Cyrus starred in the Disney Channel series from 2006-11 as a middle schooler who was living a double life as a famous pop star named Hannah Montana. Cyrus recently appeared on The Ringer's Every Single Album podcast to talk about her discography, where she opened up about growing up and moving past the role. That was a challenge because her identity was so wrapped up with the character. She was not really something that was made on paper,' Cyrus said in the interview. Asked if she had to 'separate yourself from yourself' as a result when she left Disney, Cyrus replied: 'I guess I was. It was before I had a license and I started doing things that Hannah wouldn't be doing because it's like a Barbie, you know, she's just like, she's kind of sexless in that way. And I started, you know, 'living,' we shall call it. And I remember thinking, this is going to be very awkward to now wear tutus and Doc Martens [Hannah's signature look]. … I remember one of the directors was like, it's like now the lion's been let out of the cage and it's like seen where it's come from and you're going to have a really hard time walking yourself back into the zoo.' She continued: 'There I go like, you know, you see the lion that it's not walking itself. It's like on a chained collar and it's being dragged or prodded into the thing and you're going to have to do that. And I remember just kind of going like now I feel like I'm a little bit of a fraud because these like kids are looking at me as this kind of like sexless thing. And now I know what all this is, and it feels a little bit sillier putting the wig on now. But it wasn't until, like, I was probably 15 or 16, and then there was still more seasons of that, and that's when I started pushing more. But what was interesting is as I started to push Hannah forward, they actually started to kind of try to reel her in because I think it's just scary for them.' Cyrus said that, as a result, she would try to put her own stamp on some of the songs she recorded and performed. But 'I didn't know to like ask for songwriting credit because I didn't even know because I'm like, well, it's going to say 'Hannah Montana' and I'm Hannah Montana, so that's enough credit for me,' she said. 'But now I'm like, I should have really had more credit in there because I was shaping that whole identity of the thing. And a lot of the songs were written off experiences that I was having.' Cyrus also revealed that drugs were 'a super important part' of the creative process for her 2015 album Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz. 'The drugs were the biggest cost,' she said. 'To hide those from my accountant, we called them vintage clothes and so she would get these checks of thousands of dollars worth of vintage clothes. And every time she saw me, she'd be like, 'Where's that like $15,000 original John Lennon T-shirt that you bought?' It's like, 'Oh, it's upstairs. Would you like some?' So I bought a lot of 'vintage clothes' that year.' Cyrus is currently promoting 'Something Beautiful,' a film that premiered Friday at the Tribeca Film Festival. (It also led to some drama after a handful fans who bought tickets at $800 pop became upset when they realized she would not be performing at the event.)
