
How tech is transforming the Indian car market
Six months ago, Honda launched a new iteration of its least expensive car in India: the Amaze. While it was a seemingly regular refresh of a mainstream car, the Amaze brought features not seen before in its segment: lane-keep assistance, adaptive cruise control, collision avoidance and road departure warning for as low as ₹12 lakh on-road.
Honda isn't the only one. In 2021, homegrown carmaker Mahindra Auto launched its premium sports utility vehicle, the XUV700. It saw massive demand, contributing to Mahindra becoming India's second biggest carmaker by sales last month. Its key hook: technology.The car, priced ₹9 lakh onward, brought features that were so far largely reserved for luxury cars priced at around ₹50 lakh and above: remote car start control, remote air conditioning, live tracking and geofencing through a mobile app, autonomous braking and related advanced driver assistance system (Adas) features, a 'Smart Pilot' semi-autonomous driving mode, a 360-degree parking camera, and more.
These features, along with the likes of tyre pressure monitoring, cameras on side mirrors, auto-dimming electronic mirrors, are becoming standard across cars priced at around ₹15 lakh. A decade ago, most cars in this segment showcased Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as their prime tech offerings, alongside branded speaker set-ups. The technology itself is on a steady evolution trajectory—basic Adas features are found in an increasing number of cars, while luxury carmakers are finding ways to use tech in indulgent ways.
Theatres & intelligent seats
'I no longer press buttons or scroll through toggles, I simply speak with my car. For instance, I can tell my car to adjust the air conditioning if I'm feeling hot," Vikram Pawah, president, says BMW India. Pawah's proposition with BMW is of tech that provides lifestyle enhancement. The BMW i7, the company's flagship offering, features an 8K 'Theatre Screen'—a 31-inch fold-out display that can turn the car into a private theatre. While Adas features have continued to evolve alongside, the company has begun standardizing various technologies.
'Basic Adas features, for us, are a part of the standard offering even in our entry-level models—we view this as a necessity that customers demand in terms of safety. Even the curved display on the dashboard is a necessity to ensure that all the information is within the eye-level of the driver, minimizing the need for distractions," Pawah says.
Santosh Iyer, managing director and chief executive of Mercedes-Benz India, concurs. 'We're now in the process of integrating a new operating system, MB.OS, which will integrate generative artificial intelligence—where the voice assistant in the car will learn from an owner's usage habits. For instance, a Mercedes-Benz car can automatically learn how a seat is configured based on daily usage trends, and adjust it based on the time of the day," Iyer said.
Mercedes-Benz, in its flagship offering, the EQS SUV, offers a 56-inch 'Hyperscreen' that integrates all information across three separate display panels. While one caters to the driver and shows the mechanical essentials of the car, there is also a 17.7-inch infotainment display, and a third 12.3-inch display for the co-passenger riding up front.
Both Pawah and Iyer believe that none of them take anything away from the primary features of their cars, either. 'Our focus remains on the driving experience, but the technology features ramp-up what we have on offer to showcase features that were never seen in cars before," Pawah said.
Connected cars
In the luxury segment, connected cars—vehicles with integrated connectivity that can relay information on weather and live traffic through a central server—have become the norm. 'We're using this today to work with governments and public bodies to try and improve road safety conditions, as well as roads themselves. This is a key part of our offering, and while it does add to the cost significantly in terms of engineering and integration of chips, it's a long-term benefit. Customers buying a car today, for instance, can receive software updates to their in-car system for eight or more years down the line—hence giving them incremental value over time," says Iyer. BMW, too, offers connected cars as a platform—in the long run, this data can be harvested for autonomous driving use cases.
Buying decisions
Car buyers, too, feel that tech features give them more bang for the buck. Noida-based 44-year-old IT professional, Anuraag K, says that he bought the new Honda City over a similar offering from Skoda because an equivalent variant of the car gave him access to Apple CarPlay wirelessly. 'It's a tiny thing for many people, but for me, it made a big difference—not having to keep my phone tethered to a wire," he said. Meanwhile, Aniket Hazra, a 28-year-old consultancy professional, says that he is considering the Mahindra XUV700 over SUV offerings from other brands 'because Mahindra's tech-laden aesthetics simply feel more premium—even closer to a Tesla."
Consultants believe that technology is an imperative, but in terms of buying decisions, there could be diminishing room for differentiation. 'While there are some early movers, every carmaker is integrating most forms of Adas features and software-driven experiences to remain competitive. Buyers today are more tempted with tech features that are visible or can be experienced than what's under the hood. This is a clear way in which tech is impacting car-buying decisions," says Som Kapoor, automotive leader for EY India.
In the long run, the differentiating aspect of technology will be agnostic of segments and will depend on how tactically useful the technology is. 'People today expect that if their phones can do a certain task, why can't their car? The key factor to note here is to analyze 'features leading to benefits'—the more value-added features a carmaker can integrate, the more will it lure in users to choose one car over another," says Kapoor .

As carmakers gear up for mid-year momentum, June 2025 is turning out into an attractive month for car buyers in India. Several major manufacturers have announced notable discounts, benefits, and special schemes on popular models. From Jeep's premium SUVs to Honda's sedans, Hyundai's hatchbacks, Tata's EVs and Citroen's anniversary deals, customers can avail themselves of a wide range of offers across segments. If you too are looking to buy a new automobile in the month, take a look at the benefit options given below: Jeep India is aggressively pushing discounts across its portfolio amid slowing sales. The Jeep Compass is available with benefits of up to ₹2.95 lakh, including a direct consumer offer of up to ₹1.70 lakh, a corporate discount of ₹1.10 lakh, and an additional ₹15,000 special benefit for select professionals such as doctors, employees of leasing firms, and corporate partners. The Compass is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine producing 168 bhp and 350 Nm, paired with either a 6-speed manual or torque converter automatic. Priced between ₹18.99 lakh and ₹32.41 lakh (ex-showroom), this offer could make it more accessible to potential buyers. The Jeep Grand Cherokee, which is sold only in its top-spec Limited (O) trim at ₹67.50 lakh (ex-showroom), gets a flat discount of ₹3 lakh. Benefits may vary depending on city, stock, and dealership. Jeep's biggest offer is on the Meridian SUV, with total benefits reaching up to ₹3.90 lakh. This includes consumer discounts of up to ₹2.30 lakh, corporate discounts of up to ₹1.30 lakh, and a special benefit of ₹30,000. The Meridian is available in four trims, namely Longitude, Longitude Plus, Limited (O) and Overland, priced from ₹24.99 lakh going up to ₹38.79 lakh. Honda is offering promotional benefits of up to ₹1.20 lakh across its lineup. The Honda City is available with offers worth ₹1,07,300 on all variants, while the City e:HEV hybrid sees total benefits of ₹65,000. These discounts typically include a loyalty bonus, exchange benefits, and a complimentary extended warranty. Competing in the midsize sedan segment, the City faces rivals like the Hyundai Verna, Skoda Slavia, and Volkswagen Virtus. For SUV buyers, the Elevate ZX variant gets the highest offer this month, with total benefits reaching ₹1.20 lakh. This includes a combination of exchange bonuses, loyalty rewards, and corporate offers. The Elevate rivals the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara in India. The midsize SUV is powered by a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine which makes 120 bhp. The newer third-generation Honda Amaze doesn't get direct cash discounts but comes with corporate benefits and special loyalty bonuses for existing Honda customers. On the other hand, the older second-generation Amaze gets benefits of up to ₹57,200. The subcompact sedan rivals the Maruti Dzire and features affordable EMI schemes starting at ₹1,111 per lakh. Hyundai India has announced benefits of up to ₹85,000 across four models this June, the Venue, Exter, i20 and Grand i10 NIOS. These include cash discounts, exchange bonuses, and scrappage incentives. Terms may vary by dealership and region, so buyers should check with local outlets for specifics. The Hyundai Venue gets the highest discount of the lot, offering up to ₹85,000 in benefits. This compact SUV is available in seven trims and three engine options, including a 1.2-litre petrol making 82 bhp, a 1.0-litre turbo petrol producing 118 bhp and a 1.5-litre diesel churning out 113 bhp. Prices range from ₹7.94 lakh to ₹13.62 lakh (ex-showroom), with multiple manual and automatic transmission choices. The Hyundai Exter is available with a total discount of ₹55,000. Powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine and also available in CNG, the Exter competes with the Tata Punch. Ex-showroom prices range from ₹5.99 lakh to ₹10.43 lakh. The sporty i20 hatchback gets up to ₹55,000 off this June. With prices between ₹7.04 lakh and ₹11.24 lakh, the i20 remains popular among young buyers. It comes with a 1.2-litre petrol engine producing 86.7 bhp and 114.7 Nm, mated to either a manual or IVT gearbox. Hyundai's most affordable offering, the Grand i10 NIOS, sees benefits of up to ₹65,000 this month. It is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine making 81 bhp and 113.8 Nm and offers manual and AMT transmission options. Ex-showroom pricing for the NIOS ranges between ₹5.98 lakh and ₹8.38 lakh. Tata Motors has also kicked off a nationwide monsoon service camp for its customers, running from June 6 to June 20 across 1,090 workshops in 500 cities. This initiative includes a free top wash, a 30-point vehicle inspection, and discounts on parts, labour, engine oil, and accessories. Alongside this, Tata is offering impressive discounts on its electric vehicle range, including the Curvv EV, Nexon EV, Punch EV, and Tiago EV. The Curvv EV sees benefits of up to ₹70,000 on MY2024 stock, with ₹50,000 as a green bonus and ₹20,000 under exchange or scrappage schemes. The Nexon EV, with 30 kWh and 45 kWh battery options, is available with a total discount of ₹40,000. The Punch EV and Tiago EV, both available with benefits on MY2024 and select MY2025 units, offer discounts of up to ₹70,000 depending on the variant. These deals are limited to specific variants and stocks, making it essential for buyers to check with local Tata dealerships. Celebrating its fourth anniversary in the Indian market, Citroen is offering substantial savings of up to ₹2.80 lakh on select models until June 30. These anniversary offers are aimed at both new and existing customers. In addition to the savings, current Citroen owners are entitled to a complimentary car spa during this promotional period. The brand has yet to specify which models are covered under the full ₹2.80 lakh benefit, so potential buyers are encouraged to visit Citroen's official website or connect with their nearest showroom for detailed information.

Steering technology towards better vehicle dynamics
Until autonomous cars become mainstream, which some argue is a really long time away, if at all it happens, the steering wheel isn't going away and the vehicle steering system will continue to see technology development. 'I don't think that the steering system is disappearing in the next 30 years,' Dr. Peter Pfeffer , CEO, MdynamiX , and Professor, Automotive Engineering , Munich University of Applied Sciences. A joystick could also replace the steering wheel, but at the system level there's a change happening, and that's software replacing hardware. Steer-by-wire technology is set to be the next big thing in steering system engineering. 'A lot of OEMs have large projects to get the steer-by-wire in mass production. Some of them stopped the game because of the economic pressure, but some others are still working,' says Dr. Pfeffer. ADAS and vehicle dynamics With the ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) trend increasingly gaining traction, vehicle driveability, handling and comfort, or vehicle dynamics in other words, is attracting more attention. That's also leading to more hardware-in-loop (HIL) testing. The HIL test benches, linked to the driving simulators, can help gauge and calibrate the steering feel and brake feel on the driving simulator. 'This is a new trend, and a lot of people say that then driving simulator makes really sense, because then we can calibrate the systems like steering system, brake system, lane keeping system and so on, and make the evaluation of the tyres too,' says Dr. Pfeffer, who's also a global expert in steering systems and vehicle dynamics. The Pfeffer Steering System designed by Dr. Pfeffer is a well used conceptual framework for engineering vehicle dynamics, with a special focus on steering behaviour and its effect on droveability. It was first developed as a "very large research project" for BMW, which focused on strong driving dynamics as a brand attribute, with also a tagline of 'Sheer Driving Pleasure'. The German luxury car major's goal was to find objective targets for steering feel. They wanted to develop the steering feel with virtual methods. 'And here one part was to make this evaluation of the steering system with test drivers, subjective evaluations, and the other side was the objective evaluation. And the next step was that we want to produce these objective values out of the simulation tools. And this was the driver of this development,' explains Dr. Pfeffer. Good steering feel or feedback is key for a better driveability or driving experience. Will a drive-by-wire system be able to match the experience of a mechanically linked steering system? Yes, according to Dr. Pfeffer. He says, 'We made such a car, in partnership. It was also used for racing, and the feedback from race drivers was very, very positive, but this is not in mass production. It was just some first prototypes.' Autonomous, ADAS tech will see gradual progression Autonomous Driving is one of the key global megatrends but its progression has significantly lagged behind other megatrends such as electrification, Connected Vehicles. Assisted driving in the form of ADAS tech is paving the path for it, but time will have to be invested too for the requisite technology maturity. 'When you look back, the first ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) was launched around 2000, and now 70 or 80% of cars in Germany are equipped with this system. It has taken more than 20 years (for the tech) to get to a maturity level, and the same will be for lane keeping tech which started later. So it takes time,' says Dr. Pfeffer, who is confident that Autonomous Driving will 'of course' become a reality. Role of Industry-Academia collaboration In an increasingly technology-intensive, disruptive era, automotive industry players have to innovate and develop technologies faster than ever before. In such a scenario, the value of or need for industry-academia collaboration may be stronger than ever. Dr. Pfeffer, who also had a stint at Audi as a chassis and NVH engineer, many years ago, believes that it's important for academia to be in tune with the trends and needs in the industry landscape. 'The big benefit of having worked in industry is that you know what the industry is needing, and you are not teaching stuff which is not for any use in the industry,' says Dr. Pfeffer, who also points out that in Germany it's essential for an individual to have industry work experience to apply for professorship. Academicians-led enterprise Dr. Pfeffer, and his core teammates at MdynamiX also form an interesting example of academicians and entrepreneurs at the same time. Peter Pfeffer, Bernhard Schick, Stefan Sentpali, and Markus Krug, all professors, came together to form MdynamiX, an engineering firm specialising in ADAS/AD, UX, vehicle dynamics, steering & brakes and NVH, in 2014. Why did a group of professors form an engineering firm when they could have done developmental projects in their labs? 'Because there are so many PhD theses, tons of papers written, there's so much knowledge in this. But development engineers don't have time to read the PhD for the whole day or so. And so to make it easier to use them, we said, okay, we have to develop easy to use products and software out of the best ideas,' says Dr. Pfeffer. MdynamiX also has an academy automotive engineers are trained to use such methods. Given the growing ADAS trend in India and the opportunities arising thereof, the Munich based MdynamiX has also established an India presence with a joint venture with Delhi based Automotive Test Systems .
