Tupong assemblyman questions DAP's non-support for addition of DUN seats

Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman
KUCHING (July 8): Tupong assemblyman Dato Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman has questioned the logic behind the Democratic Action Party (DAP)'s reluctance in supporting the proposed increase of seats in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN).
Debating the DUN (Composition of Membership) Bill 2025, during a special sitting yesterday, Fazzrudin expressed bewilderment at what he described as DAP's inconsistent stance, calling it 'a clear sign of political confusion'.
'I am baffled that members from the Opposition, particularly Pending and Padungan, oppose increasing state seats, yet (they) support adding parliamentary seats. This inconsistency is difficult to comprehend,' he pointed out.
The Bill, tabled by Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, proposes to increase the number of elected DUN Sarawak members from the present 82 to 99, following the constitutional provision that allows for a review after eight years.
Fazzrudin, also the chief political secretary to the Sarawak Premier, said the Opposition's claims that the seat increase would benefit Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) politically were 'premature and unfounded'.
'The role of the DUN today is only to decide whether or not we agree to increase the seats.
'The redelineation process after that is under the jurisdiction of the Election Commission (EC), not GPS.
'The EC, which falls under the federal government's jurisdiction, will handle the technical aspects including public objections and final approvals.'
Fazzrudin lambasted DAP representatives for suggesting that the move was politically motivated.
'How is it fair that a large area like Hulu Rajang, which is the size of Pahang, is represented by only three state seats? Shouldn't we be looking at geographic realities too, not just population?' he said.
Fazzrudin stressed that having more representatives would translate to more allocations of resources and better development for rural and underrepresented areas, aligning with Sarawak's long-term development goals.
'The idea of 'one person, one vote' must also consider the physical size and development needs of a constituency. A larger area with only one ADUN (assemblyman) cannot be effectively served.'
He also reminded the House that the proposed redelineation was in line with Malaysia's founding agreements, citing the need to restore the one-third parliamentary seat representation for Sarawak and Sabah, a provision originally safeguarded during the formation of Malaysia.
'This is the first step towards restoring that balance.
'Once, Sarawak, Sabah and Singapore together held one-third of the seats in Parliament. That balance must be reinstated to ensure that no law detrimental to our rights is passed without any proper check.'
The Bill is expected to proceed to the next stage of the legislative process, pending approval from the EC, and eventual endorsement by the federal government.

Only here for big flag and nasi kandar, Umno Youth chief says after IGP warns against Jalur Gemilang clash in Penang

KEPALA BATAS, Aug 14 — Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh has today suggested that he was not out to cause trouble with a planned event on Jalur Gemilang in Bertam here. In a brief post on Facebook, he said the wing's members are just here for the scenery and food. 'We just came to see the big flag and have some nasi kandar,' he wrote, attaching a news article citing Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail. 'The big flag' refers to the giant Jalur Gemilang hung by DAP at a hardware store on Jalan Bertam Perdana, which recently went viral for flying the national flag upside down. Earlier, the police urged the cancellation of a planned gathering in Bertam here today over the issue of Malaysian flag, to prevent any confrontation between opposing groups. PDRM said the move was to safeguard the safety of the local community and maintain public order, after both Umno Youth and DAP planned to host events on the matter. The controversy began when a 59-year-old hardware shop owner in Kepala Batas, Penang, was investigated after the Jalur Gemilang was seen hanging upside-down outside his premises. The shop owner has reportedly said it was an unintentional mistake made while measuring a flagpole, which he corrected soon after. Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh previously said it planned to hold a 'class' for the Penang shop owner, but later cancelled it after a warning by the police. DAP then announced it would sponsor a giant Jalur Gemilang for the shop and mobilise Penang party members to distribute 831 flags, should anyone attempt to stir trouble.

Uproar over Hadi's poem blaming KL woes on DAP

THE Dewan Rakyat descended into chaos when PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang (PN-Marang) implied during his debate that Kuala Lumpur's problems were due to DAP and the unity government. In his speech debating the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), he recited a poem in Malay containing the line: 'KL is problematic due to DAP, Pakatan Harapan and friends.' The remark prompted Chong Zemin (PH-Kampar) and RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) to raise a point of order, asking presiding speaker Suhaizan Kaiat to address the matter. Chong cited Standing Order 36 (1) to demand why Abdul Hadi was talking about matters unrelated to the 13MP. Several PAS MPs then stood up and told Chong to sit down. Datuk Che Mohamad Zulkifly Jusoh (PN-Besut) said it was up to Abdul Hadi to debate on any issues based on policies. Chong replied that he wanted to know why Abdul Hadi was not talking about the 13MP. A shouting match then ensued between Chong and several Perikatan Nastional MPs. Several PAS MPs were heard shouting 'DAP is rude'. Rayer responded by saying: 'Is it acceptable if I say PAS is Parti Ajaran Sesat? (PAS is a party of deviant teachings)', which angered the PAS MPs. Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul who came in to replace Suhaizan ordered the MPs to sit down and told the next MP to continue with the debate. However, Datuk Awang Hashim (PN-Pendang) and Rayer were heard still talking. Johari then reprimanded both of them. 'What kind of people's representatives are you? Have you no shame? Very shameful of you all, shameful!' said Johari.

‘Disrupt the peace, face arrest'

GEORGE TOWN: Anyone who attends a planned gathering outside a hardware shop in Bertam, Kepala Batas, faces arrrest. Penang police chief Comm Datuk Azizee Ismail, who said action would be taken against anyone who incites tension and disrupts peace outside the shop today. The shop is involved in a controversy when the owner was filmed holding a pole with the national flag upside down. In a statement, Comm Datuk Azizee advised against joining the gathering to ensure community safety and maintain public order. 'Just wait for the Attorney General's Chambers to take the next step. He said the investigation papers had been submitted to the Chambers on Monday. 'Action will be taken against any individual or group found to be breaking the law or causing disturbances, riots or criminal acts in accordance with existing legal provisions,' he said. Comm Azizee said to date, a total of 38 police reports have been lodged nationwide – 17 in Penang and 21 in other states. He said police are also investigating the person who recorded and circulated the video. On Saturday, the shop owner Pang Chin Tian, 59, was arrested following accusations that he had improperly displayed the flag. He has been released on police bail. On Tuesday, Penang DAP put up a giant Jalur Gemilang at the shop, adding that it planned to mobilise its members to 'defend' the business premises. This prompted Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh to say he would turn up today to see if DAP had hung the promised flag 'correctly.' He also called on others to join him at the gathering at a night market some 2km from the shop. MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said DAP's move could draw large numbers of politically charged individuals to a location already under intense public scrutiny. This, he said, would drastically increase the risk of direct confrontation. The issue first came to light after a 21-second video, showing two men outside the hardware shop with the Jalur Gemilang upside down, went viral.
