BCCI holds 28th Apex Council meeting, constitutes committee to form guidelines for victory celebrations after tournaments
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 14 (ANI): The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) held its 28th Apex Council meeting on Saturday, during which a committee was formed to prevent cases like the stampede outside Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium after Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title win. Also, venues for the home white-ball series between India and New Zealand were approved.
The committee will be headed by BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia. The committee will formulate guidelines about such victory celebrations within 15 days.
A statement from BCCI said, 'The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) convened its 28th Apex Council Meeting on Saturday, June 14, 2025.'
'The following key decisions were taken during the meeting: The Apex Council expressed its profound grief over the tragic incidents in Ahmedabad and Bengaluru, which led to the unfortunate loss of innocent lives.'
'In light of the incident that occurred during the victory celebrations in Bengaluru, the Apex Council has decided to constitute a committee to formulate comprehensive guidelines aimed at preventing such occurrences in the future. The committee will comprise: Devajit Saikia (Chairperson), Prabhtej Singh Bhatia (BCCI Treasurer) and Rajeev Shukla (BCCI vice-president). The committee will formulate the guidelines within 15 days,' the statement continued.
The stampede left 11 people dead and 33 people injured.
The Apex Council confirmed the venues for India's upcoming white-ball home series against New Zealand, scheduled to be held in early 2026. The series will have three ODIs to be held at Baroda (January 11), Rajkot (January 14) and Indore (January 18) and five T20Is to take place at Nagpur (January 21), Raipur (January 23), Guwahati (January 25), Vizag (January 28) and Trivandrum (January 31).
The BCCI Domestic Season 2025-26 has been approved, the season will start with the Duleep Trophy (August 28, 2025) and conclude with the Senior Women's Inter-Zonal Multi-Day Trophy (April 3, 2026).
There have been some key changes made to domestic cricket tournaments and structure:
*The Duleep Trophy and Senior Women's Challenger tournaments will now be contested between six zonal teams selected by zonal selectors.
*Plate Group restructuring has been introduced across age categories. The bottom 6 teams (based on the previous season's rankings) will be placed in the Plate Group for limited-overs tournaments.
*Promotion/relegation rules updated: Only one team will be promoted/relegated between Elite and Plate groups going forward.
*Tournament Format Updates: The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Senior Women's T20 Trophy will now include a Super League stage instead of a traditional knockout.
*New Grouping Formats: Major tournaments such as Vijay Hazare Trophy, Senior Women's One Day Trophy, and Men's U23 State A Trophy will follow a 4 Elite Groups + 1 Plate Group model. Most junior and women's tournaments (U16, U19, U23) have moved to a 5 Elite + 1 Plate group structure.
The Apex Council has resolved to establish a Working Group comprising five (5) 'Umpire Coaches' to oversee the development of umpires and enhance their on-field performance. These five 'Umpire Coaches' must possess international umpiring experience and have served as former umpires.
Additionally, the Apex Council has decided to form a Working Group consisting of three (3) former Match Referees. This Working Group will be responsible for monitoring the development of match referees and providing them with opportunities to improve their performance in cricket matches. (ANI)

'No expectations': How Ajit Agarkar, Gautam Gambhir reacted after Shubman Gill was named India captain for England Tests
The old generation is starting to fade, and the new era is beginning to take over. Indian cricket is all about transitioning at this stage, with the BCCI setting the example by naming Shubman Gill as India's Test captain, starting with the five-Test series against England. During the IPL 2025, Gill led Gujarat Titans to the Playoffs, but barring that, his leadership in the Ranji Trophy has mostly gone untested. They just want me to be able to express myself as a leader. That's what they've told me 'there are no expectations'. They are not expecting me to do something I am not capable of. In terms of that, I don't think that there are any expectations or pressure from them but you definitely have some kind of expectations from yourself as a leader and a player. So those are the expectations that I have from myself but not from them," Gill told former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik in a candid chat for Sky Sports. With no Rohit, Virat Kohli or Ravichandran Ashwin, Gill knows that a huge mountain lies ahead. India are yet to win a Test series in England since 2007, but even if that trivia is to be ignored to lessen the pressure, Gill will be leading a bunch of seniors including Bumrah, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and hence, to ensure this new, exciting chapter of his career kicks off smoothly, his vision is clear. "Apart from all the silverware and trophies aside, I would ideally like to build a culture where everyone is very secure and happy. I know it can be a very difficult environment, especially with all the competition or the number of matches that we play and different squads coming in, but if I am able to do that, that would be my goal," added Gill. And he has a point. There are at least three, if not more, solid contenders for every spot in the Indian Playing XI, especially in the batting department. During their time, Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma were able to successfully ace this practice, making communication clear with players they wanted or didn't. And hence, it may not be a bad idea for the Gill and Gambhir pair to take up the same approach to deliver long-term results.

AB de Villiers hints Virat Kohli ghosted him after last year's 'pregnancy' blunder: ‘Thank goodness! I had a footfall'
On June 3, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, minutes before the start of the IPL 2025 final between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the Punjab Kings, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers shared an emotional hug. Hours later, at the end of the thrilling night that saw the RCB claiming their maiden IPL title, the two greats of the franchise and the sport were seen sharing the screen for interviews and celebrating. But not long ago, the two weren't on talking terms. Speaking to the former South African international opened up on his blunder last year, which he revealed led to Kohli ignoring him for months. But admitted that he was happy when the former India captain started talking to him again around the start of this year. De Villiers was asked about Kohli's retirement from Test cricket, and whether he drew a parallel between his decision in 2018 and that of his former RCB teammate, with both having drawn the curtains "prematurely." He then opened up about his conversation with Kohli about the same, revealing that it was only six months back that the Indian legend began talking to him again after that blunder in 2024. "I know we were in the same boat because we spoke about it. He's been in touch with me over the last six months. Thank goodness! Because I did have a bit of a footfall not too long ago when they were expecting their second child. So, I was very relieved when he started talking to me again," he said. "We all know he went through a bit of a patch and sort of wanted to bounce a few ideas off me. How did I get through certain moments of my life. So, I knew what kind of phase he was going through, considering his age and how many games he's played, and the dynamics of being in the team all the time, the politics thereof as well. There are a lot of things weigh in on you, and so I shared with him from the heart what I felt and what I thought watching him on the screen. I'm happy he is still around playing cricket and that decision comes from the heart and I support him 100 per cent with that," he added. In early 2024, Kohli had skipped the entire home series against England, citing personal reasons. The decision instantly drew criticism from experts, before De Villiers, taking to his YouTube channel, jumped to his defence, saying that Kohli was away from national duty as he and his wife, Anushka Sharma, were expecting their second child. A few days later, he sharply retracted his statement, saying that he had 'made a big mistake.' Speaking to Dainik Bhaskar on the sidelines of the then-ongoing SA20 league in South Africa, he said: "Family comes first and then Cricket. I made a terrible mistake on my YouTube channel. That information was wrong and not true at all. Virat has every right to take a break from national duties due to family reasons. I think whatever's best for Virat's family, comes first. No one knows what's happening there, all I can do is wish him well. Whatever the reason for his break, I hope he can come back stronger, better, and fresh from this." Although, De Villiers' revelation was true as Kohli and Anushka welcomed their second child, a son named Akaay, on February 15, 2024.

As per the Telegraph in the UK, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is close to agreeing a new deal with the ICC that will see it host the 2027, 2029 and 2031 WTC Finals. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD ICC rejects BCCI's bid to host WTC final All three WTC Finals so far have also been hosted in England with South Africa winning the latest on Saturday at Lord's. The 2021 final was held at Southampton, while the 2023 final was played at the Oval in London. 'English cricket is close to securing hosting rights for the next three WTC finals, despite India's strong interest in bringing the event home,' the report in the Telegraph stated. 'The decision is expected to be formalised at the ICC's Annual Conference in Singapore next month, with preparations for the 2027 final to begin soon after the current edition concludes.' The report added that the BCCI 'repeatedly' called for rotating the WTC final among different Test-playing nations, but the Jay Shah-led ICC has decided to stick with England for the next three editions. Why does ICC prefer England for WTC Final? One of the major reasons ICC prefers England as the host of the WTC Final is the fact that the summit clash is always held in June. England offers ideal weather conditions in June for a Test match. It's the start of English summer, hence, the chances of rain washing out a match are less and the temperatures are also not very high. England also regularly manages to pack the stadiums during the WTC finals and the national team's Test matches. The ease of logistics is also reportedly a major reason behind ICC preferring England.
