Kuala Krai council member pleads not guilty to rape in laundromat, court sets bail at RM15,000
The accused Muhammad Jaya Murugan Abdullah, 47, made the plea after the charge was read before Judge Zulkifli Abdullah.
According to the charge, the alleged offence took place at a laundromat, Nikiysa 1909 Laundry, at PT 2430, Jalan KCP 2, Krai Central Park, at 2pm on May 29.
He is charged under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum imprisonment of up to 20 years and whipping upon conviction.
Lawyer Ariff Azami Hussein, representing the accused, applied for bail on the grounds that his client has no prior criminal record, is a community leader within the local Indian population, and is active in business and social initiatives.
'The accused has 12 children, including two stepchildren, and is currently supporting 10 who are still in school. The proposed surety is his biological brother, who works as a plantation manager. Our client is also willing to report regularly to the police station,' the lawyer said.
However, deputy public prosecutor Kamarul Hasyime Rosli objected to the bail application, citing the seriousness of the charge, and proposed a bail sum of RM30,000 along with additional conditions.
The court allowed the accused a bail of RM15,000 with two local sureties, along with several conditions, including surrendering his passport, reporting to the police every two months, and being strictly prohibited from harassing the victim in any way.

Scam losses hit RM1.12b in six months as authorities tighten crackdown
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 — Financial losses from online scams amounted to RM1.12 billion between January and June this year. According to a written reply published on the Parliament website, the Home Ministry said that to curb such crimes, the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC), in operation since October 12, 2022, has been strengthened as a one-stop centre and has been operating round the clock since July 1. This allows victims to lodge reports directly via the 997 hotline without having to go to a police station. 'After nearly three years of administrative operation, the Prime Minister, while chairing a special meeting of the National Cyber Security Committee (JKSN), agreed that the NSRC should be placed under the purview of the Home Ministry and led by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM),' the reply stated. The response was to a question from R. Yuneswaran (PH–Segamat), who asked about the total financial losses suffered by Malaysians due to online scams up to July this year. The ministry added that other measures to curb scams include international cooperation, proposals to amend the Penal Code to address cybercrime cases, and the Semakmule 2.0 portal initiative to help the public check the status of bank accounts, phone numbers and companies potentially involved in fraudulent activities. — Bernama

KEPALA BATAS, Aug 14 — Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh has today suggested that he was not out to cause trouble with a planned event on Jalur Gemilang in Bertam here. In a brief post on Facebook, he said the wing's members are just here for the scenery and food. 'We just came to see the big flag and have some nasi kandar,' he wrote, attaching a news article citing Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail. 'The big flag' refers to the giant Jalur Gemilang hung by DAP at a hardware store on Jalan Bertam Perdana, which recently went viral for flying the national flag upside down. Earlier, the police urged the cancellation of a planned gathering in Bertam here today over the issue of Malaysian flag, to prevent any confrontation between opposing groups. PDRM said the move was to safeguard the safety of the local community and maintain public order, after both Umno Youth and DAP planned to host events on the matter. The controversy began when a 59-year-old hardware shop owner in Kepala Batas, Penang, was investigated after the Jalur Gemilang was seen hanging upside-down outside his premises. The shop owner has reportedly said it was an unintentional mistake made while measuring a flagpole, which he corrected soon after. Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh previously said it planned to hold a 'class' for the Penang shop owner, but later cancelled it after a warning by the police. DAP then announced it would sponsor a giant Jalur Gemilang for the shop and mobilise Penang party members to distribute 831 flags, should anyone attempt to stir trouble.
