Are the Steelers wrong to bench Rodgers, Metcalf for preseason finale?

Mike Tomlin made the announcement today that when the Steelers go to Carolina, four of his biggest names will not play.
Aaron Rodgers, DK Metcalf, TJ Watt, and Cam Hayward.
Not exactly surprising, but it means, Charles, as you pointed out on our text thread, that Aaron Rodgers and DK Metcalf will throw in a competitive period against someone other than teammates for the very first time together, week one, when they face the Jets.
So that will be their dress rehearsal for the big premiere.
It'll all be the same game.
Is that not ideal?
Are you telling me?
Are you suggesting, are you suggesting maybe you would want a little more practice time between your, your number one wide receiver and the, you know, the quarterback you waited the entire offseason to get him into the building and finally acclimate with players.
Yeah, it's a little, a little problematic, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if there is a slow start for, uh, the offense with, with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Now, I think it's a little overrated.
I mean, we act like because Aaron Rodgers, we act like because Aaron Rodgers didn't play the preseason that these guys haven't been doing anything.
Like they're just gonna meet in New York, like, hey, I'm DK, I'm They practice every day.
Like you're gonna be OK, you play, you play them, you're gonna be killing them.
You, you think it's gonna take October.
OK, so they play up one series, two series.
Aaron Rodgers throws well to DK Metcalf three times, which would kind of be a lot for two series, and that, oh, they're humming, they're ready to go against the Jets, practicing the wholethat when, when the Jets traded for Devonte Adams.
What did we hear for the first couple weeks?
And it was two players who had known each other forever, played together forever, you know, I mean, they were basically brothers from another mother, and all we heard was, oh, they're still kind of getting the kinks worked out.
They're still, oh, it's still, you know, they're not quite there yet, but they're gonna get there.
And then it took them until what?
Like the last month of the season before they really clicked together as players, so you can't sit there and tell me that it doesn't matter with DK Metcalf, but it most definitely mattered with the three targets in the preseason.
You think three targets in the preseason matter that much.
I think anything you can do in live action matters, and I agree with you.
I am also the guy who has done Rams preseason games for 14 years.
The last time that Sean McVay firmly believed that you shouldn't put your big-name players at risk in the preseason, do it in a joint practice.
I don't need to see you in the preseason, but I'm with you.
Charles, you can wonder aloud.
If that's going to affect your early season sloppiness and chemistry.
Don't worry, they only opened the season at the Jets against Justin Fields, the quarterback who, for all intents and purposes, he's replacing.
And oh yeah, by the way, the Jets are in the building where Aaron Rodgers has played his last two years.
So nothing in any way whatsoever will get blown out of proportion week one, with Aaron Rodgers and the Jets, if for some reason, the Steelers don't look up to form.

30 most important Buffalo Bills players of 2025: No. 6 Taron Johnson
As the Buffalo Bills prepare for the 2025 NFL season, we'll take a look at the most important contributors on their roster. They have a ton of cornerstone players who will be returning for another shot at bringing a Lombardi Trophy to Buffalo, and they'll have help from some new additions as well. Leading up to the season, we will be counting down the top 30 most important players on the roster. We'll recap their 2024 season, look ahead to what they'll offer in 2025, and tackle the most pressing questions surrounding them this coming year. Next up on the countdown is Taron Johnson. Background Position: Nickel cornerback Age at start of season: 29 Experience: Eighth year 2025 cap hit: $8,010,000 2024 recap Taron Johnson suffered a forearm injury in Week 1 of the 2024 season and it forced him to get off to a slow start. He missed the next four games and returned for Week 6. He not only dealt with the forearm but he had a shoulder injury as well that required surgery in the offseason. Still, Johnson was able to play in all three postseason games in his important nickel corner role where he's asked to cover some of the shiftier players in the league and also come downhill and tackle like a linebacker. In 12 regular season games last year, he recorded two interceptions (one for a TD), 65 tackles, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery which resulted in a touchdown. 2025 outlook Johnson will return as a cornerstone of the Bills defense in 2025. In 2023, the last season where he was healthy, he was named a second-team All-Pro. There is added talent around him this coming year with the revamped defensive line and the return of linebacker Matt Milano so Johnson should be a key cog in a bounce-back year for the Bills defense. Although not listed as a captain, Johnson is one of the veteran leaders on the team and has been in the trenches delivering big hits since 2018. Biggest question: What does the future hold? Johnson will turn 30 years old next year ahead of the 2026 season. There is an "out" in his contract after this coming year that the Bills could take and save on the cap in 2026 and 2027, but as of right now, there is no sign that they would cut ties with Johnson. He has meant a ton to head coach Sean McDermott and the Bills defense since becoming a regular starter in 2019. He was drafted in 2018 during a rebuilding phase for the Bills and he has played a big role in the team turning into one of the best in the NFL over the last five seasons. He's had big moments, including the 101-yard pick-six in the 2020 divisional round, and he'd love nothing more than to be around for the Bills bringing home a Lombardi Trophy. 30 Most Important Bills of 2025 Check back as we continue to countdown on our list of the 30 most important Bills ahead of the 2025 season. No. 30 DT T.J. Sanders, No. 29 LB Dorian Williams, No. 28 DT Larry Ogunjobi, No. 27 Alec Anderson, No. 26 DE A.J. Epenesa, No. 25 DT DaQuan Jones, No. 24 TE Dawson Knox, No. 23 WR Elijah Moore, No. 22 WR Joshua Palmer, No. 21 S Cole Bishop, No. 20 K Tyler Bass, No. 19 WR Keon Coleman, No. 18 G David Edwards, No. 17 DE Joey Bosa, No. 16 G O'Cyrus Torrence, No. 15 CB Max Hairston, No. 14 TE Dalton Kincaid, No. 13 LB Matt Milano, No. 12 DT Ed Oliver, No. 11 S Taylor Tapp, No.10 RB James Cook, No. 9 C Connor McGovern, No. 8 WR Khalil Shakir, No. 7 DE Greg Rousseau.

Former Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater left his mark in the record books as a rookie
For a rookie quarterback to come in and make an impact, it is not the easiest thing in the world. In any sport, one could argue that no one has a harder job than being a rookie quarterback. You go from a college to a professional version of a game you know growing up where the speed is different, the language changes, and it makes you question everything you knew. Because of the seriousness of the job a rookie quarterback has, someone took a look at the best performances by them since 2000. The Athletic's Nick Baumgardner went through every rookie season for quarterbacks and found the 25 best over that time period. The Vikings found Teddy Bridgewater in the 2014 NFL Draft, and while they only went 7-9 that season, and he was 14-12 in touchdowns to interceptions, he showed something. Baumgardner writes, "Younger fans of today's game need to know that Bridgewater was on his way to potential stardom before suffering a devastating and career-altering knee injury in 2016. Early in his rookie campaign, Bridgewater replaced Matt Cassel and played his best football down the stretch before taking the Vikings to the playoffs in his second season (and earning a Pro Bowl nod)." Bridgewater was on the path to being the franchise quarterback the Vikings had been looking for before his knee injury, as he points out above. Mike Zimmer was not perfect in a lot of aspects either, but he seemed to work well with Bridgewater. One big "what could have been" for the Vikings, but it is a nice honor for the former Vikings signal caller.

2026 NFL draft: New York Giants land 'chaos causer' in Field Yates mock
The New York Giants are getting very little respect heading into the 2025 season. NFL draft analysts are still predicting that Big Blue will be selecting near the top of the order in the 2026 NFL draft, which means they are in for another dismal season despite many of the wholesale changes the team has made this past offseason. In a recent 2026 mock draft, Field Yates of ESPN has the Giants drafting second, behind only the Cleveland Browns. Translation: ESPN's Power Football Index is predicting another 3-14 season, or worse. In addition, Yates has the Giants trading back from No. 2 to No. 4 with the New York Jets. With that fourth pick, the Giants select Clemson defensive tackle Peter Woods, who Yates calls a "chaos causer." Entering the season, two non-quarterback prospects rise above the rest for me: Ohio State's Caleb Downs and Woods. The Giants are well-positioned at safety after signing Jevon Holland, so I'm going with Woods and adding to an already outstanding defensive line. Woods is a chaos causer. He had just three sacks in 2024 after none as a freshman in 2023, but his game goes far beyond the box score; every opponent O-line had a plan for him on each snap last season. He also has the positional versatility to line up and rush from multiple spots, which would help alongside Brian Burns, Abdul Carter, Dexter Lawrence II and Kayvon Thibodeaux. Of course, we have several issues with this entire scenario. The Giants may have been 3-14 last year, but keep in mind, they lost eight of those 11 games by one score or less. With improved quarterback play this year, they should win at least 7-8 games this season. Although Woods appears to be a nice pick here, the Giants used a third-round pick in this year's draft on Darius Alexander, a player they like a lot. Unless Yates is predicting Alexander to be a bust -- or completely forgot about him -- it's hard to imagine the Giants going defensive line with a top-5 pick.
