Lynne Ramsay On How Critics Are Misreading Her Buzzy Cannes Title ‘Die My Love': 'This Postpartum Thing Is Bulls***t'

Yahoo20-05-2025

Die My Love, the latest feature from Scottish filmmaker Lynne Ramsay, was one of the hottest titles heading into this year's Cannes Film Festival, and the film's stock has only grown following a headline-grabbing $24 million acquisition by Mubi.
The film has been divisive on the ground in Cannes and is still a hot talking point up and down the Croisette. But did anyone who watched the film in the Lumiere on Friday actually understand it? Ramsay, a Cannes Film Festival vet, is skeptical.

'This whole postpartum thing is just bullshit,' Ramsay said Monday afternoon of the discourse surrounding her movie during a fireside chat with veteran film journalist and critic Elvis Mitchell here in Cannes. 'It's not about that. It's about a relationship breaking down, it's about love breaking down, and sex breaking down after having a baby. And it's also about a creative block.'
Starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson, Die My Love tells the story of a young couple who leave their comfortable lives in New York City for a quieter life in rural Montana. They live a life of passion, but after they have a baby, their relationship is shaken to its core.
The pic is based on the 2017 novel by Ariana Harwicz and also stars LaKeith Stanfield, Sissy Spacek and Nick Nolte. Ramsay directed Die My Love from her script, written with Enda Walsh and Alice Birch. Producers include Justine Ciarrocchi and Lawrence on behalf of Excellent Cadaver, as well as Martin Scorsese, Andrea Calderwood, and Black Label Media's Molly Smith, Trent Luckinbill, and Thad Luckinbill. The latter served as the financier.

Later during the session with Mitchell, Ramsay broke down how Lawrence ended up in the pic alongside Pattinson, telling the audience that the Oscar winner had reached out to her to express her interest in collaborating. Ramsay said that she 'probably didn't get back to her for six months,' but the pair reconnected, with Ramsay suggesting a different project. But the filmmaker said Lawrence persisted.
'She said, 'What about this Die My Love?' But I said I don't want to do something like We Need to Talk About Kevin. I'd like to do something light. Because people like to box you in,' Ramsay said of her early conversations with Lawrence. Ramsay's 2011 feature We Need to Talk About Kevin is a psychological thriller about the strained relationship between a teenager and his parents. Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly and Ezra Miller star.

After some convincing, Ramsay said she wrote a first draft for Die My Love, and she ultimately discovered her interest in the project.
As Deadline reported first, Mubi's deal on the film includes a full domestic theatrical commitment on 1,500 screens for 45 days. The streamer/distributor took the following territories: North America, Latin America, UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Benelux, Turkey, India, Australia and New Zealand. It's the first major deal on the ground for a film playing at Cannes and by far Mubi's biggest acquisition ever.
The 78th Cannes Film Festival runs through Saturday.

Hollywood star's Aussie hideaway for sale

A luxurious property hidden away on the Gold Coast hinterland, and a favourite of Hollywood star Margot Robbie, has hit the market. Known as The Orchard, the 7.4 acre property surrounded by rainforest and national park is a secluded hide-out for the Oscar nominated actor when she returns to her Gold Coast hometown. Coastal real estate agent Ed Cherry said Robbie had visited the property, located down the road from where she grew up, multiple times. 'It is one of her favourites,' he told NewsWire. 'She loves that it's got that Byron Bay feel, but it's in the middle of Tallebudgera Valley so it's central to the Gold Coast, airport, the amenities down at Currumbin Creek and everything you want to do in the area,' he said. 'It has a hobby farm feel, but it's very private with a big gate at the front, which you enter over a concrete bridge. 'The property is surrounded by a creek then backs onto the Tallebudgera hinterland with old growth forest and national park behind you.' The private and peaceful sanctuary is described as a haven for people seeking wellness and tranquility with modern luxury. The property has more than 30 fruit and nut trees and a veggie garden to enjoy as you soak up the beauty of nature, as well as an in ground pool, cabana and other amenities. 'It's got a really calming wellness feel to it,' Mr Cherry said. 'When you enter the property you see it's had extensive renovations that have been done, it looks like an old Queenslander, but it has a very modern cottage feel inside. 'It's everything you feel from a modern home or a new apartment in a cottage-style home on the hinterland.' The property is open to offers over $4.9 million Error in retrieving data Sign in to access your portfolio Error in retrieving data

Dakota Johnson Proves a Little Black Dress Can Still Be the Most Fabulous Choice

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." Dakota Johnson looked electric las night as she made her entrance at an event celebrating Italian jewelry brand Roberto Coin in New York City. The actor was spotted walking into Cipriani, looking ultra-glamorous in a strapless black draped gown that was pulled up at the center and flowed down to the sides. The slinky maxi dress was both easy and so elevated for a night out in the city. Johnson styled the piece with Ferragamo's pointy black Eva pumps with slanted stiletto heels, and a magnificent diamond necklace from Roberto Coin. The necklace adorned her decolletage like a floral lace collar, but with white diamonds instead. It was dotted with blue heart-shaped sapphires. To go with the necklace, the Am I OK? star also slipped on some blue cocktail rings from the jeweler. She completed her effortlessly sophisticated look with a dark smoky eye and a bronze lip. Johnson also wore a little black dress earlier this month, to walk the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival. Then, she accessorized even more minimally, styling it only with strappy heels and tiny diamond earrings—plus a pretty side braid. Johnson served as the face of Roberto Coin's latest campaign, 'The Art of Dreaming.' In a video, she is seen standing before stunning views around Venice in several of the jewelry label's gleaming new creations. 'Today a vision comes true with the new 'The Art of Dreaming' advertising campaign by Roberto Coin featuring a stellar @dakotajohnson. Venice has never been so enchanting,' the brand wrote on Instagram alongside the clip.
