Social media uproar and
deportation calls
Ramirez's assertion of Guatemalan pride before American identity ignited a storm on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and TikTok. Critics accused her of disloyalty, questioning her allegiance as a U.S. lawmaker and demanding her deportation, despite her American citizenship by birth.
Live Events
Trending hashtags included calls like #DeportDelia and #AmericanFirst, reflecting a significant and vocal backlash. Many posts framed her remarks as unpatriotic and "anti-American," fueling a broader debate about identity, citizenship, and the role of immigrant-descended politicians in the US. Some users also demanded her removal from the Congress saying 'She can, and should be kicked out of Congress immediately. Her allegiance is not to the United States of America, that in her own words.'
Supporters condemned the attacks as
xenophobic
and misleading, emphasizing Ramirez's right to pride in her heritage while also being fully American. Advocates pointed out her active role in pushing for comprehensive immigration reform and defending marginalized communities in Congress. They argued the uproar was politically motivated and underscored ongoing racial and immigrant-related tensions in American public discourse.
The White House condemned the remarks by Ramirez and other lawmakers at the summit, with spokesperson Liz Huston calling the comments 'despicable' and accusing them of putting Americans last. Meanwhile, Ramirez's office has stood by her statement, framing it as a personal declaration of heritage and a call to recognize the contributions of immigrants to the US.

'The unfortunate incident of a cloudburst in the Dharali (Uttarkashi) region of Uttarakhand is extremely tragic and heart-wrenching. I pray to Lord Badri Vishal Ji for the well-being of the people affected by this accident,' Adityanath posted on X in Hindi. Lucknow, Aug 5 (PTI) Top Uttar Pradesh leaders, including Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, on Tuesday expressed concern over the cloudburst in Uttarakhand and prayed for the well-being of the people of the hill state. 'Our demand is that rescue and relief operations be carried out on a war-footing and every possible effort be made to save people's lives. Every single life is precious,' Yadav said, adding, 'Environmental protection is the guarantee of life preservation.' BSP chief Mayawati said the news of widespread destruction, including the collapse of houses and hotels, as well as several people missing due to the cloudburst in the Dharali village of the Uttarkashi district is extremely sad and concerning. 'The central and state governments should promptly take action to provide all possible assistance to the victims and strengthen safety measures in such areas for the future to ensure that loss of life and property in such disasters can certainly be minimised,' Mayawati posted on X. The Uttar Pradesh unit of Congress also took to social media to express its concern over the situation. Disaster swept through the Himalayan village of Dharali on way to Gangotri on Tuesday with a massive cloudburst leading to flashfloods that barrelled through homes, trees and cars, trapping 60-70 people and leaving at least four dead. Dharali is the main stopover on way to Gangotri, the origin of the Ganga, and home to many hotels, restaurants and home stays. At least half the village was buried under the fast flowing mudslide of slush, rubble and water, officials said as rescue personnel battled the elements in the ecologically fragile heights to contain the damage. Contiguous buildings, including three- and four-storey houses, fell like a pack of cards as the surging waters washed over them. The devastating flashflood came in the wake of a cloudburst somewhere in the catchment area of the Kheer Ganga river. PTI KIS MNK MNK This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. How would California override its independent commission rules? Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads FAQs In a high-stakes redistricting battle, California Democrats are drafting a retaliatory map that would eliminate five Republican-held districts. Governor Gavin Newsom is opposing Texas 's Republican-led effort to flip seats in the United States House. If approved, California's proposal could reshape national politics ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. The plan relies on legislative and voter approval, which presents significant legal and political plan would also generously boost Democratic margins in districts for competitive seats that are anchored in the Central Valley farm belt, Orange County, and San Diego County. This could give Democrats a leg up as Texas Republicans attempt to tip the House's precarious districts currently occupied by Republican Representatives Ken Calvert, Darrell Issa, Kevin Kiley, David Valadao, and Doug LaMalfa, the proposal suggests shaving the votes of right-leaning voters and increasing the votes of Democratic voters, as per a report by The Daily would increase the likelihood that a left-leaning candidate would win each race. "The party's advantage would be strengthened to strengthen their hold on the seats in districts held by Democratic Representatives Dave Min, Mike Levin, and Derek Tran," as per the Republicans, on President Donald Trump's urging, have called a special legislative session aiming to redraw congressional lines that would deliver five additional safely Republican seats for the 2026 elections. In opposition, more than 50 Texas House Democrats fled the state, denying quorum and halting the solidarity, Newsom hosted some of those lawmakers in Sacramento and publicly declared that California will not 'sit by idly.' His catchphrase: 'fight fire with fire.' California is now preparing a plan that would shift key districts toward Democrats if Texas congressional delegation's Democratic members were briefed on the proposed map Monday, according to the AP report. Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom has stated his desire to promote partisan redistricting, which coincides with the proposal's halting its efforts will prevent him from proceeding, he says. If Texas doesn't want to go first, the measure won't go through, and the commission will stay the same until the next regular a tit-for-tat reaction to Texas redrawing its map to benefit Ken Calvert, Darrell Issa, Kevin Kiley, David Valadao, and Doug LaMalfa may see their districts flipped Democratic.

MP chain snatching case: Over 1,500 CCTV cameras scanned, 200 quizzed but police yet trace suspect, scooter
A man in his early 20s, wearing a colourful full sleeve T-shirt and a helmet, is seen riding a black Suzuki 125 scooter in CCTV camera footage. This was just after he allegedly snatched a gold chain from Congress MP R Sudha, while she was on a morning walk on the streets of Chanakyapuri in the high-security Lutyens' Delhi on Monday. The suspect, who was seen driving at a very high speed both before and after he targeted the MP, then flees towards South Delhi's Moti Bagh. Police suspect he came from the same direction before he committed the crime. According to sources, the Delhi Police has so far scanned over 1,500 CCTV cameras – including 900 installed around embassies and areas near the incident spot – to identify the suspect. Police teams have also searched over 25 localities, including jhuggi jhopri clusters at Chanakyapuri, Sarojini Nagar, and R K Puram. But to no avail. A source said the CCTV camera footage is not clear enough to identify his face and the scooter's registration number. The police are taking the help of a face recognition system and other technical tools to identify the accused and the vehicle registration number, the source added. A senior officer said 24 teams from the New Delhi district police, Crime Branch, Special Cell, and Special Staff are working to apprehend the accused. According to CCTV footage, as soon as the suspect crossed the railway bridge while coming from Moti Bagh, he took the Flag Pole roundabout from Shantipath and turned onto Niti Marg, where gates 3 and 4 of the Poland Embassy are located. There, he allegedly spotted Sudha and Rajya Sabha MP Rajathi Salma walking along the roadside, snatched Sudha's gold chain, and sped away on his scooter. Over 200 people, including many with previous criminal records, as well as snatchers recently released from jail or out on bail, have been questioned, said police. Police said that Chanakyapuri, home to several embassies and high commissions, has 20 'bad characters' on record at the local police station, with the majority known to be involved in bootlegging and thefts. Five of them are currently active, said an officer. Hours after the incident, the district police chief had directed all police stations in New Delhi district to conduct early morning patrols and picket checks in Chanakyapuri and nearby areas, another officer added. Earlier this year, a similar snatching incident had taken place in Chanakyapuri, which was cracked by the police within a few hours. 'The accused, who was on a scooter, had chased a woman pillion rider on another scooter and snatched her chain. The accused was arrested from Sarojini Nagar and the chain was also recovered,' a source said.
