BJP leaders pay tributes to Vajpayee on death anniversary
The leaders hailed Vajpayee's visionary leadership, recalling that his government laid the foundation for India's rise as a global power, both economically and strategically.
Ramchander Rao credited Vajpayee's tenure for landmark infrastructure projects such as the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana and the Golden Quadrilateral project, which gave a major boost to connectivity and development.
He also noted that Vajpayee's government faced international sanctions after the Pokhran nuclear tests but stood firm in safeguarding national interest. He further highlighted reforms in the supply and export system of essential food grains like rice and wheat introduced during Vajpayee's rule.
Rao recalled that Vajpayee's birthday is observed every year as 'Good Governance Day' by the government and the BJP, in recognition of his ethical and effective administration, which he described as a 'golden age' in Indian history.

India signs Terms of Reference for trade deal with Russia and others
India and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), comprising Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and the Kyrgyz Republic, on Wednesday (August 20, 2025) signed the Terms of Reference (ToR) to launch negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), the Indian government announced. Also Read | Trump imposed tariffs on India to end Russia-Ukraine war, says White House The ToR were signed by Ajay Bhadoo, Additional Secretary in the Department of Commerce in the Government of India and Mikhail Cherekaev, Deputy Director in the Trade Policy Department in the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC). 'Both sides noted the growing trade turnover between India and the EAEU, which stood at $69 billion in 2024, registering a 7% increase over 2023,' the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said in a release. 'With a combined GDP of $6.5 trillion, the proposed FTA is expected to expand market access for Indian exporters, support diversification into new sectors and geographies, enhance competitiveness against non-market economies, and deliver significant benefits to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs),' it added. The Ministry added that both sides of the agreement reaffirmed their commitment to an 'early conclusion' of the FTA and to 'building a long-term institutional framework for trade cooperation'.

Govt slams Opposition for spreading lies over Maharashtra election data
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Wednesday (August 20, 2025) slammed the Opposition for disrupting Rajya Sabha proceedings, saying it was spreading lies on the Maharashtra election data, a day after research organisation CSDS issued a public apology acknowledging errors in its poll data. Despite Vice-Chairperson Bhubaneswar Kalita's repeated appeals to maintain decorum, Opposition members continued raising slogans of "vote chori bandh karo" (stop vote theft). This is an important issue... We have to save democracy and the Constitution." Mr. Pradhan made his opening remarks on the bill amid the sloganeering. The Union Minister continued his speech and said, "Opposition is doing harmful work as they are not letting Parliament function. Parliament functions with help of poor taxpayers' money." He accused the Opposition of wanting to discuss "one fact posted by one person in the CSDS related to the Maharashtra election with malafide intention". "There is one person who has deliberately spread confusion in the country and the Opposition, especially Congress, is further circulating it," the Education Minister said. Aiming CSDS, which receives funding from the government's Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), Mr. Pradhan said, "Taking funds from the Government of India, it is not proper to challenge democracy." The Minister noted that ICSSR has taken cognisance of the issue and will take appropriate action. "The head of that institution (CSDS) has issued a public apology saying the facts were wrong," Mr. Pradhan added. The Education Minister accused the Opposition of creating a negative atmosphere and preventing meaningful legislative discussions. "Can Congress tell whether it supports IIM Guwahati or not?" he questioned, adding that the Opposition's stance has "hurt Assamese people".
