Telangana plans to implement focused welfare schemes for the underprivileged
Speaking to TNIE, sources revealed that caste-wise data on state government employees is also being collected to identify which communities have been underrepresented in government jobs. In March this year, the state government constituted an expert committee to conduct a detailed analysis of the data collected from the recently concluded caste survey with an objective of formulating inclusive and evidence-based policies for the welfare of all communities in the state.
The government also plans to ease the work of those practising various caste-based occupations like dhobi, carpentry and pottery by providing latest technology-enabled machinery.
Recently, the Telangana government announced wage incentives for handloom weavers under the Telangana Nethannaku Bharosa (assurance to weavers) scheme. A budget of Rs 48 crore was released for the initiative. Sources revealed that more such schemes are in the pipeline.
The Telangana government passed two legislations — the Telangana Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Reservation of Seats in Educational Institutions and of Appointments or Posts in Services under the State) Bill, 2025 and the Telangana Backward Classes (Reservation of Seats in Rural and Urban Local Bodies) Bill, 2025 — in the Assembly on March 17, 2025.
As these two Bills remain under scrutiny by the Union Home Ministry, the state government has sent The Telangana Panchayat Raj (Amendment) Ordinance to Governor Jishnu Dev Varma. This ordinance aims to facilitate the enhancement of 42% reservations for BCs in local body elections. It is learnt that the Governor has sought the opinion of the Attorney General of India on the proposed Bill.
Meanwhile, the Cabinet meeting, scheduled for Friday, was postponed as the Governor's nod for the Telangana Panchayat Raj (Amendment) Ordinance is still awaited. It appears that the government is firm on issuing 42% reservations to BCs in the local body elections, based on the caste survey data.

Ahead of Durga Puja, puja committees in West Bengal are expecting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to increase the financial grant for them, with a crucial meeting of festival organisers with the chief minister scheduled for July 31 at Kolkata's Netaji Indoor Stadium to finalise the plans. The meeting holds immense significance for thousands of big and small Durga Puja committees in Kolkata and other districts. Last year, the Government raised its grant from Rs 75,000 to Rs 85,000 per puja committee. Many feel the chief minister will increase the grant further to Rs 1 lakh in an announcement at the July 31 meeting. The chief minister will preside over the meeting, which is expected to see representatives from approximately 5,000 puja committees, high-ranking police officers, Kolkata's mayor, and officials from the fire department, the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation, and other agencies. Puja committee officials are eagerly awaiting the day, as the chief minister traditionally announces not only financial aid but also various exemptions for the festival. Checks of the government grant are typically disbursed to committees via local police stations. Political analysts are keenly observing this year's meeting, given its timing ahead of the Assembly elections next year. The Trinamool Congress has seen positive electoral outcomes linked to the puja grants. With the Lok Sabha elections having concluded last year, during which the grant was increased, the potential increase in the grant to 1 lakh just before the Assembly elections is seen by political circles as a strategic move that could positively influence the ballot. Furthermore, the chief minister is said to be leveraging this platform to promote communal harmony. Beyond the financial aspects, the meeting will also provide essential guidelines for various festival preparations, including maintaining cleanliness and ensuring drinking water supply during the puja days. While some puja committees had previously returned the grant in protest over issues like the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the vast majority have consistently accepted the government's financial assistance. CM Mamata embarks on district tours, starting with Birbhum Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee started a district tour on Sunday, starting with Birbhum. Trinamool Congress sources said the chief minister would arrive in Birbhum on Sunday afternoon. Her itinerary includes an overnight stay at Rangabitan. On July 28, she will hold an administrative meeting at Gitanjali Theatre to review the district's development projects. A section of Congress leaders rally in support of Satheesan against Vellappally's attacks
A section of Congress leaders and members of some Muslim youth organisations appeared to rally in support of Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan who faced harsh criticism from Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam (SNDP) general secretary Vellappally Natesan for the third consecutive day on Sunday. Congress leader K.C. Joseph said in a social media post that criticism of any political leader, including Mr. Satheesan, should conform to accepted standards of public decency. He took strong exception to Mr. Natesan's 'insinuation' that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was above criticism in the House. (Mr. Natesan had accused Mr. Satheesan of being 'arrogant' to Mr. Vijayan in the Assembly, despite the latter's age and seniority). Congress legislator Mathew Kuzhalnadan termed attacks on Mr. Satheesan an attack on Congress. Social activist and writer Muhammad Kinalur accused the Congress leadership of being hesitant in marshalling support for Mr. Satheesan and being overly cautious around Mr. Natesan. No merger of BRS with any party, asserts KTR
Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president K. Taraka Rama Rao (KTR) ruled out the BRS merging with any political party and said it would remain relevant to Telangana politics till the State exists. 'We have no reason to merge with anyone, and we will remain in public service as long as we have the people's blessings,' he said, arguing that the BRS was the only party that was rooted in the spirit of Telangana. He made these remarks while addressing a meeting of the Bhupalapally district party workers. His assertion came at a time when the BRS is cornered over allegations that there were efforts to merge it with the BJP. This gained credence after BJP MP C.M. Ramesh claimed that KTR personally visited him at his residence with the proposals. 'I have the evidence to prove it,' he claimed. As the BRS workers were caught in a dilemma, KTR categorically dismissed any such possibility and said this was a ploy to play with the sentiments of the party workers. He further said that people were now waiting for the Congress government to go, so that K. Chandrasekhar Rao could lead the State again. Mr. Rama Rao claimed that the Congress government's incompetence had pushed the State into chaos. 'A single wrong vote has pushed Telangana into danger. It is now up to the people to correct that mistake,' he argued, appealing to the Backward Classes, farmers, and women to reject the Congress in the upcoming local body elections. The former Minister said power was never permanent. What mattered was whether the poll promises were kept and history will remember who contributed to Telangana's development. 'Telangana's development and welfare could only continue if KCR returns as Chief Minister.' Further attacking Chief Minister Revanth Reddy for 'betraying' the Backward Classes (BCs) he said the promise of allocating ₹ 20,000 crore per year for BC welfare in the Kamareddy Declaration was not kept. And the Congress has no right to seek their votes.
