5 best new movies to stream this weekend on Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, and more (Aug. 9-10)

Tom's Guide2 days ago
Another weekend is here, which means a fresh slate of movies has landed across the best streaming services. While Netflix's catalogue is surprisingly light this week, HBO Max, Prime Video, and Hulu are making up for the lull with some blockbusters fresh from the theater. That includes an audience favorite that's one of Pedro Pascal's wildest movies this year.
No, it's not "The Fantastic Four: First Steps." But "Freaky Tales," which just arrived on HBO Max, does have a superhero, and the directors cut their teeth on the MCU, so it's not far off. Another marquee debut is "Jurassic World: Rebirth," which crashed onto paid video-on-demand services this week with the grace of a T-Rex.
Also worth checking out this weekend are Prime Video's latest action-packed buddy comedy, "The Pickup," and the newest nightmare-haunting horror flick from "Longlegs" director Osgood Perkins, "The Monkey," on Hulu. Meanwhile, Netflix isn't leaving its subscribers completely high and dry, as you can now catch the 2023 action blockbuster "Kandahar" starring Gerard Butler on the platform.
So without further ado, let's dive into the best new movies on streaming to watch this weekend.
Pedro Pascal is everywhere these days, but the "Fantastic Four" and "The Last of Us" star particularly shines in this chaotic and funny VHS-style anthology. Helmed by "Captain Marvel" directors Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, "Freaky Tales" follows four loosely connected vignettes set in 1987 Oakland, California, that all wrap up together at the end in surprising fashion.
There's the career criminal (Pascal) tackling one last job before he goes clean; a pair of teen punks (Ji-young Yoo and Jack Champion) defending their turf against Nazi skinheads; a hip hop duo (Dominique Thorne and Normani) who stumble into a career-launching gig; and an NBA all-star (Jay Ellis) looking to get revenge. For a wild ride of a comedy that also nails its period setting with style to spare, "Freaky Tales" looks like a worthwhile watch.

"Jurassic World: Rebirth" doesn't aim to rewrite the long-running franchise's playbook, but for anyone craving fresh dino-fueled chaos, it gets the job done. Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali take the reins as a team of mercenaries hired to infiltrate a dinosaur-infested island and recover DNA that could lead to medical breakthroughs.
If that premise sounds familiar, it's because it is, and director Gareth Edwards leans into this with a knowing wink. Known for his eye-catching visual effects in big-budget sci-fi franchises like Star Wars and Godzilla, he proves to be a natural fit for "Jurassic Park." The CGI dinosaurs look better than ever, even if fans might miss the je ne sais quoi of old-school animatronics.

Prime Video is keeping the momentum going after "Heads of State" with another action-packed buddy comedy, this time pairing up Eddie Murphy and Pete Davidson. The two comedy stars play armored truck drivers whose routine cash run spirals out of control when a crew of criminals ambushes them.
Leading the charge is Zoe (Keke Palmer), who reveals that their plans go way beyond the truck's cash cargo. The heist devolves into a high-stakes, high-speed ride as the unlikely duo tries to survive the worst day of their lives without ripping each other's heads off.
Watch "The Pickup" now on Prime Video
If you missed "The Monkey" in theaters, you can now catch it on Hulu. And you'll want to, because this is one of the best Stephen King adaptations in recent memory. Equal parts bloody and hilarious, it's another win for "Longlegs" director Osgood Perkins, who continues to cement his place as the rising master of horror to watch.
"The Monkey" follows twin brothers Hal and Bill Shelburn (both played by Theo James), who, as kids, stumble upon the creepiest monkey doll in history. Every time it bangs its cymbals, someone dies, and it's anyone's guess who's next on the chopping block. Though they eventually grow apart, the brothers are reluctantly reunited when the monkey resurfaces, forcing them to confront their past and put an end to the curse once and for all.

Gerard Butler continues his run as cinema's reigning everyman action hero with "Kandahar," an explosive spy thriller loosely based on real events. This time, he stars as Tom Harris, a CIA operative whose cover is blown after a mission puts him in the crosshairs of some dangerous enemies.
Stuck in hostile territory in Afghanistan with his translator (Navid Negahban), he has to fight his way through enemy combatants to make it to an extraction point in Kandahar. Oh, and he's also supposed to sign his divorce papers. But those will have to wait. It's a pretty cliche set-up, but Butler sells it with a grounded sincerity as a battle-hardened veteran who's painfully aware that the life he's chosen has left little room for real connection.

Pluto TV's free true crime channel may keep you up until 3 a.m. (and it's worth it)

We've all fallen down a true crime rabbit hole at some point. Maybe it started with a podcast, a "Dateline" episode or that one docuseries all your friends were talking about. For me, it started as background noise while I recovered from a broken ankle. What was supposed to be a quick glance while attempting to work turned into a full-blown obsession, and it's all thanks to the Pluto TV's true crime channel. If you haven't heard of it, Pluto TV is one of the best free streaming services out there. It offers live channels and on-demand content across genres, from reality TV to movies, classic sitcoms, and yes, a whole channel dedicated to true crime. Best of all, it's totally free, supported by ads, and you don't even need to create an account to start watching. Just download the app or go to the website, pick a channel, and start streaming. There are dozens to choose from, but here's why I'm locked into the true crime channel. There are over a dozen reasons that I can't stop watching, and they mostly stem from the kinds of content on rotation with this channel. There's a steady rotation of episodes from shows like "Forensic Files," "Cold Case Files," "Dominick Dunne's Power, Privilege, and Justice" and "Unsolved Mysteries." You might start watching one to kill time, but before you know it, you've watched six in a row and have very strong opinions about forensic luminol. It's that always-on format that makes it so easy to leave it running, so that's what I do. There's something deeply nostalgic about binge-watching on Pluto TV. Unlike Netflix or HBO Max, where you select specific titles to watch, it feels more like flipping through cable channels in the early 2000s, when I grew up watching whatever was on TV — which usually included true crime series and documentaries. Whoever programmed this channel knows exactly what kind of viewers they're attracting. These aren't slow-paced crime procedurals. The shows here get straight to the point: There's a dead body. There's a detective. There's a suspect who 'wasn't acting quite right.' And soon enough, there's a lab technician saying something chilling like, "It turned out the fibers matched." And all of those elements add up to a satisfying story that you want to follow, even when it's late at night. Kirk Frost's Daughter Kelsie Frost Breaks Silence On Boyfriend T-Hood's Murder, Denies ‘Conspiracy Theories' About Her Involvement: ‘I Would NEVER!

LHHATL star Kirk Frost's daughter is at the center of a 'total nightmare' after her boyfriend T-Hood was killed and she had to shut down 'conspiracy theories' blaming her for the Atlanta rapper's death. 'I don't even have time to grieve… because I am defending myself, being attacked,' she said. Source: Julia Beverly / Getty Kelsie, daughter of Kirk and his former girlfriend Kellie Harris, not only faced a tragic loss but also rampant rumors that she had a hand in it. Most ask for privacy at a time like this, but she had to ask for an end to the accusations. Kelsie said she's 'been advised not to speak up by plenty of parties' about this ongoing investigation. However, T-Hood's grief-stricken girlfriend couldn't let social media circulate unfounded claims of her involvement in his tragic death. On Saturday, the 30-year-old took to Instagram to shut down the 'false narratives' running wild online and 'give insight' into her side of the story. Kelsie addressed the 'weird and sick rumors' that she called her brothers over a domestic dispute and an altercation with her family somehow led to the shooting. We care about your data. See our privacy policy. 'I can't sit back and let the narrative being created go on. The love of my life is GONE. The man I lay with and cuddle every single night… is no longer here. So as I want to ask for respect and privacy, I won't because I will always defend my baby. I don't condone this s**t in any way, shape, form or fashion. I am sick to my stomach. I don't wish this on anyone,' she wrote on Instagram stories about the 'total nightmare.' 'I don't even have time to grieve or say my respects in the right manner because I am defending myself, being attacked by people who are creating weird and sick rumors. I'm not good at talking, but would love to give insight and let the people who love him in, to get understanding…' she continued. Read more of what Kelsie Frost said about the 'false narratives' and the facts we do know about T-Hood's shooting after the flip. In another post, Kelsie Frost confronted the most viral rumors that she called her family to 'harm' T-Hood. She begged the public to 'stop listening to people who weren't there, listening to all these rumors and conspiracy theories. 'I hate to even post this, but I won't let y'all bully me and put blame on me, making it seem like we weren't one! I ain't ever fathomed no s**t like this. I love my man with my ENTIRE HEART! Sending me threats, I am grieving, too! I am hurting, too! I didn't harm anyone or ask anyone to harm him!!! I didn't call for anyone to come help me! I didn't ask for this! I would NEVER!' Kelsie wrote. She went on to add that the 'Ready 2 Go' star was 'still HEALING' from recently getting shot three times. Kelsie also stated that the stories circulating about asking her family to intervene are completely out of her true character because 'we handled our business in private.' And as the only girl, she wouldn't want the men in her family to confront a boyfriend she never wanted to leave, even for one night. 'I didn't call a brother, I didn't call anyone but HIS mother. THAT'S MY BABY!!!!!!! I don't care who's involved, I DON'T CONDONE THIS!!! I am not okay!' she concluded. Gwenitt County Police posted about the August 8 homicide hours later on X Friday night. The post withheld T-Hood's identity to notify the family first. According to GCPD, someone called to report a dispute that ended in a shooting at the rapper's residence. 'When officers arrived at the incident location, they located the man who was shot and rendered aid. Gwinnett County Fire Rescue transported the man to a local area hospital, where he ultimately passed away from the injuries sustained. One person was detained at the shooting location and is in the process of being interviewed by detectives,' the statement said, but no arrests have been reported. According to TMZ , T-Hood's mother confirmed the victim was her son. The motive is unclear for the shooting, which police are investigating as a homicide. For any social media slueths claiming to know details about the 'Perculator' rapper's murder, instead of taking it to the internet, they can report it to GCPD. 'If anyone has any information to share in this case, please contact GCPD detectives at 770.513.5300. To remain anonymous, tipsters should contact Crime Stoppers at (8477) or visit Crime Stoppers tipsters can receive a cash reward for information leading to an arrest and indictment in this case,' the police statement continued. Our condolences go out to T-Hood's family and loved ones. New on Netflix — 7 top shows and movies this week

Another week, another slew of new shows and movies coming to Netflix. In a twist, though, many of the biggest shows and movies coming to the streaming service this week are not Netflix originals. There are still a few, but the biggest names are licensed titles: "Outlander" season 7 part 1, "Sullivan's Crossing" season 3 and several of the "The Fast and the Furious" movies. Still, several Netflix originals are dropping this week that are must-watches. "Night Always Comes" is a new crime thriller starring Vanessa Kirby, sure to dominate the Netflix Top 10 when it debuts this Friday. Reality TV show fans will be logging on a few days earlier to catch "Love is Blind: UK" season 2 when it premieres on Aug. 13. For more to watch, read on for my top picks, a full list of everything new on Netflix this week and the scoop on what's leaving Netflix this week. If you need more, check out our guide to everything new to Netflix in August, and check out these seven shows that will disappear from Netflix later this month. "Night Always Comes" stars Vanessa Kirby as Lynette, a Portland woman who is trying to take care of Kenny, her older brother with Down Syndrome. She has her family home for now, but she's struggling to hold onto it. If she loses it, then she loses everything, including him. So when her mother (Jennifer Jason Leigh) spends money on a new car instead of the house, Lynette is driven to desperation. She steals a car belonging to an acquaintance (possibly a client) and goes on a wild journey through the Portland underworld to get $25,000 in a single night. Having watched the trailer, "Night Always Comes" looks like it will deliver on the tension you want from a crime thriller. It has a talented cast and an intriguing premise, so I'm hopeful it'll be the next hit movie for Netflix. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Watch on Netflix starting Aug. 15 Netflix is adding seven "The Fast and the Furious" movies on Saturday, including the spin-off "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw." But if you're only going to watch one of the movies in the franchise, it has to be the first one. "The Fast and the Furious" (2001) stars Paul Walker as LAPD officer Brian O'Conner. He's been assigned to go undercover and infiltrate a street racing gang suspected of robbing several semitrucks on local highways. To get in the crew, he'll need to impress Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), and that means he'll need a fast car. Is this movie basically a "Point Break" remake? Well ... yes. But even though it's still not quite as good as Kathryn Bigelow's masterpiece, it's still a great action movie and genuinely one of my favorite movies to watch. Don't miss your chance to watch, or rewatch it, now that it's on Netflix. Watch on Netflix starting Aug. 16 If you're a Netflix reality show fan, you're probably familiar with the concept of "Love is Blind." A group of singles enters the show looking for love, but there's a catch: they can't actually look at their potential mate. Instead, they need to develop an emotional connection, entering pods to get each other without ever seeing each other until they're ready to get engaged and live together for a trial run before marriage. "Love is Blind: U.K." takes that same premise and applies it to singles in the British Isles. This season, the singles range in age from 26 to 37 and include a dating app founder (how ironic), a gaming entrepreneur, a professional dancer, a DJ, a certified genius and more. Watch on Netflix starting Aug. 13 Watching new episodes of "Outlander" remains one of the few reasons to have a Starz subscription. But if you're patient, you can just wait for the episodes to come to Netflix instead. For those of you who have never seen the incredible period drama, it stars Caitríona Balfe as Claire Randall. Claire is a former World War II military nurse who suddenly finds herself transported back in time to 1743. Once she's there, she encounters Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), a Highland warrior allied with Clan Fraser of Lovat. Jamie happens to be easy on the eyes, so eventually the two marry. But once they're united, they become entangled in one conflict after another, from the Jacobite rising to (now) the beginnings of the American Revolution. Whether you love romance or historical fiction, "Outlander" has something for you. Watch it now on Netflix "Sullivan's Crossing" is based on the popular novel series by Robyn Carr, and the first two seasons became a surprise hit for Netflix last month. It stars Morgan Kohan as Maggie Sullivan, a Boston-area neurosurgeon who finds herself returning to her hometown of Sullivan's Crossing in rural Nova Scotia after getting in some legal trouble. The show follows Maggie as her career is upended and she begins to reconnect with her estranged father, Harry "Sully" Sullivan (Scott Patterson). She also begins to connect with California "Cal" Jones (Chad Michael Murray), a newcomer to the small camping town who doesn't have past baggage with Maggie. If you love a soapy romance show, this is your next binge-watch. Watch it now on Netflix "Tyler Perry's She the People" is no more ... because it's now "Miss Governor." But besides the name, nothing about the show has changed. It still stars Terri J. Vaughn as Antoinette Dunkerson, the newly elected Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi. She's also still figuring out how to thrive while working with a sexist governor, keeping her family in line now that they're public figures and dealing with the complications of being a Black woman politician in a white man's world. Check out part two of the show's first season this week on Netflix. Watch on Netflix starting Aug. 13 This may be an animated comedy movie, but it's definitely not for the kids. 'Fixed' is an adult animated comedy about Bull (Adam Devine), a dog whose world is about to be rocked. That's because Bull is about to lose his balls, aka he's getting fixed. So his dawgs are taking him out on the town for one last day of partying before he's a changed dog forever. The premise of "Fixed" may seem dumb, but it's pedigree is not. Aside from Devine, the movie stars the voices of Idris Elba, Kathryn Hahn and Fred Armisen, among others. It's also written and directed by acclaimed animator Genndy Tartakovsky, who did the original "Clone Wars" series on Cartoon Network. Watch on Netflix starting Aug. 13 AUGUST 11 AUGUST 12 "Final Draft" (JP) (Netflix series) Twenty-five athletes, most retired, compete to win 30M yen to launch their second career. Can they overcome tough physical and psychological challenges? "Jim Jefferies: Two Limb Policy" (Netflix comedy special) Comedian Jim Jefferies unleashes his thoughts on tiny mustaches, straight-guy struggles and why acting doesn't count as a real job. AUGUST 13 "Love Is Blind: UK" season 2 (GB) (Netflix series) A new batch of singles in the UK search for love sight unseen. Who will make it from the pods, to living together, to all the way up the aisle? "Fixed" (Netflix film) After learning he's getting neutered, a dog has 24 hours to squeeze in one last balls-to-the-wall adventure with the boys in this raunchy adult comedy. "Saare Jahan Se Accha: The Silent Guardians" (IN) (Netflix series) A resilient Indian spy must defeat his counterpart across the border in a battle of wits and tradecraft to sabotage their nuclear program. "Songs From the Hole" (Netflix documentary) Songs from the Hole is an innovative documentary/visual album composed by JJ'88, a musician incarcerated at 15 and serving a life through first-person narration and lyrical journal entries, the film explores his identity and untangles the complex emotions stemming from his crime and the loss of his brother. "Young Millionaires" (FR) (Netflix series) Four teen friends in Marseille win the jackpot and see their peaceful lives spiral into chaos — who knew that being young and rich could be a nightmare? AUGUST 14 "In the Mud" (AR) (Netflix series) Five women in a ruthless prison forge a unique bond after a near-death experience... until corruption and turf wars threaten to destroy them. "Miss Governor" season 1 part 2 (Netflix series) As she tries to shine in politics, Mississippi's first Black lieutenant governor must manage her zany family and overcome a boss who's stuck in the past. "Mononoke The Movie: Chapter II - The Ashes of Rage" (JP) (Netflix anime) The Medicine Seller returns as the Edo harem faces a new crisis, with family feuds, inner turmoil and fiery envy igniting the birth of a raging spirit. AUGUST 15 "The Echoes of Survivors: Inside Korea's Tragedies" (KR) (Netflix documentary) This documentary series reveals the harrowing tales of those who survived Korea's gloomiest chapters, shedding a light on long-hidden truths. "Fit for TV: The Reality of the Biggest Loser" (Netflix documentary) Fit for TV: The Reality of The Biggest Loser is a three-part documentary series that takes an inside look at the making of the hit reality TV competition, exploring the good, the bad, and the complicated. Featuring interviews with former contestants, trainers, producers, and health professionals, the documentary examines the show's approach to transformation, the support systems in place, and the unique challenges of filming reality television. The series explores how the experience shaped the lives of those involved with the show long after the cameras stopped rolling and invites viewers to reflect on the balance between entertainment and well-being, and what it truly means to pursue lasting change. "Night Always Comes" (Netflix film) Based on the best selling novel by Willy Vlautin, Night Always Comes follows Lynette, a woman who risks everything to secure the house that represents a future for her family. On a dangerous odyssey through a single night, Lynette is forced to confront her dark past in order to finally break free.
