RAS Main aspirants given ultimatum to end protest at RU

Time of India6 days ago

Jaipur: Aspirants of the RAS Main 2024, protesting at
Rajasthan University
since Thursday demanding a postponement of the exam, were served an ultimatum by the university administration Monday evening to vacate the campus within an hour or face action.
Protesters reported a rise in police presence on campus by late evening, indicating possible forceful removal. However, candidates remained defiant, declaring they would continue their protest.
In a statement released Monday evening, the aspirants said that despite several students being on hunger strike for four consecutive days, neither the RPSC nor the state govt had taken any concrete action regarding their demands.
"Due to the scorching heat and continuous fasting, the health condition of the students is becoming critical. Ambulance services were called to the hunger strike site Monday, and two more candidates were immediately admitted to the hospital," said the statement. On Sunday, the health condition of two girls on protest deteriorated, and they were shifted to SMS Hospital for treatment.
Former Sainik Sangh president Captain K.L.
Chaudhary reached the hunger strike site Monday, extended full support to the protest, and said that the voice of the youth who are working hard with the dream of serving the country should not go unheard.
"Both the deputy chief ministers have written to the chief minister to consider our demands and work out a solution. We have received a positive response from most senior leaders of the state govt and ruling party, but still, no decision is being taken, and students continue to fall sick due to the strike," said Deepak Kaushik, one of the protesters.
The RAS Mains 2024 exam is scheduled to take place on June 17-18, but aspirants have pointed out that the interviews for RAS 2023 are currently in progress, with the results pending announcement. Candidates have demanded that the Mains exam be conducted after the interview results for the previous recruitment process are announced.

RPSC releases admit cards for RAS Mains 2024

Ajmer: The Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC) issued admit cards Saturday for the RAS Mains 2024, confirming the examination dates as June 17 and 18. This decision finalises the schedule despite protests by candidates in Jaipur who demanded the exam be postponed until after the declaration of the RAS 2023 results. RPSC is ready to conduct the exams at 48 centres in Jaipur and 29 in Ajmer for 21,539 candidates who cleared the RAS Preliminary Exam 2024. An official source from RPSC stated, "We are going as per the schedule and are prepared to conduct the exam on the timetable given before." Another source added, "As the new chairman of the RPSC, Utkal Ranjan Sahoo, took charge recently, it would not send the right message to postpone the first exam conducted under his chairmanship." A third source mentioned, "The state govt has not recommended anything in this matter; therefore, the exam will proceed as scheduled, and admit cards have already been issued. " Meanwhile, candidates who presented a memorandum to the RPSC before protesting in Jaipur stated that many who cleared the RAS Preliminary 2024 are appearing for interviews of RAS 2023 and are demanding that the RAS Mains be conducted after the RAS 2023 results are declared. RPSC secretary Ramniwas Mehta said that despite the protest, 20,000 admit cards were download on first day out of the odd 21,500. "RPSC is determined to conduct exams on time," said Mehta. tnn Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Vietnam approves 90 percent tax rate on beer, strong alcohol by 2031

File photo HANOI: Vietnam's lawmakers approved raising the tax on beer and strong alcoholic beverages on Saturday to 90 percent by 2031 from the current 65 percent, state media said. The tax rate on liquor with more than 20 percent alcohol content and all beers will rise five percentage points yearly from 2027 before reaching 90 percent in 2031 under the National Assembly's new legislation. Levies will also increase by five percentage points annually for other drinks with alcohol content below 20 percent, which are currently subject to a 35 percent tax, reaching 60 percent by 2031. "The gradual annual tax increase is not intended to change behaviour but rather to help consumers adapt more easily," Hoang Van Cuong, a member of parliament, told the assembly in March. Lawmakers also approved a new levy of eight percent on beverages containing more than five grams of sugar per 100 millilitres, taking effect in 2027 and increasing to 10 percent in 2028. Beer sales in Vietnam took a hit following the introduction of a strict zero-alcohol rule for drivers in 2019. However, Dan Martin, an International Business Advisor at Dezan Shira & Associates, said Vietnam's drinking culture has roots "that run far too deep to be uprooted by policy alone". "Rather than spelling doom for the beer market, these measures represent more of a speed bump than a roadblock," he told AFP. Martin said that behavioural shifts were already underway, with more Vietnamese people consuming alcohol at home rather than at traditional venues such as bars. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Exclusive Pre-Launch Offers – SPR Gurgaon Signature Global Book Now Undo The trend "isn't just consumers reacting to new rules", he said. Vietnam ranked seventh globally in beer consumption in 2022, according to a report by Kirin Holdings, a Japanese beer company. Nearly 41,000 Vietnamese people die each year due to alcohol consumption, according to the health ministry.

Race for state top cop position heats up after Sahoo's new role

Jaipur: The search for Rajasthan's new Director General of Police (DGP) intensified Tuesday following the appointment of DGP Utkal Ranjan Sahoo as chairman of the Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC). Leading the seniority list of potential candidates is Rajeev Kumar Sharma, a 1990-batch IPS officer currently serving as Director General of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD). Sharma's extensive portfolio, including significant roles in both the Rajasthan police force and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), makes him a strong contender for the position. His previous experience as DG (Anti-Corruption Bureau) and head of Law and Order in the state further strengthens his candidacy. Ravi Prakash Meharda, another 1990-batch officer and Director General of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), has been given the additional charge as DGP following Sahoo's appointment to RPSC. Even as he is approaching retirement, Meharda's unblemished service record and strong performance keep him in contention for permanent position in the top post. Other prominent candidates include Sanjay Kumar Agrawal (1992 batch), who currently heads the Intelligence wing and previously served as Jaipur Police Commissioner. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Sanitize & Smooth Clothes Fast with Philips Steamer Philips Garment Steamers Shop Now Undo Adding to the list is Anand Kumar Srivastava (1994 batch), Director General of the Armed Battalion, whose recent promotion to DG rank (on May 21) has sparked speculation about his potential elevation. Srivastava brings valuable experience from his tenure as ADG (Law and Order) and his five-year stint as Jaipur Police Commissioner, along with IG positions in various regions. The state govt is expected to make its final decision in the coming days based on seniority and merit, considering the crucial nature of this top law enforcement position in Rajasthan.
