Korean actor Kim Soo-hyun denies grooming and dating late Netflix star Kim Sae-ron while she was underage
During a surprise press conference on Monday in Seoul, South Korea, the 37-year-old Soo-hyun tearfully addressed accusations that he dated Sae-ron — who died by suicide at age 24 on Soo-hyun's birthday in February — when she was 15. South Korea defines juveniles as anybody under 19.
'I can't admit something I didn't do,' Soo-hyun told press, according to the BBC.
While Soo-hyun admitted that the pair had dated for a year when Sae-ron was an adult, he denied ever having dated her when she was underage.
'I never dated her when she was a minor,' he said. 'Except for the fact that both of us were actors, our relationship was just like that of any other ordinary couple.'
Soo-hyun's remarks come weeks after he found himself at the center of the scandal, which first erupted when a YouTube channel published videos and photos of the two actors, claiming they had been in a six-year relationship that allegedly began when Sae-ron was 15.
Last week, the attorney representing Sae-ron's family held a press conference and revealed further messaging history allegedly shared between the two actors from 2016, when she was 16.
Soo-hyun's agency initially denied the family's allegations before later clarifying that the two had dated from 2019 to 2020 when Sae-ron was an adult.
At Monday's press conference, Soo-hyun defended his previous denial of their relationship in 2024 when Sae-ron posted a later-deleted Instagram photo of them during the airing of his Netflix romance drama Queen of Tears.
'I had so much to protect as its lead actor,' he explained. 'What would have happened if I had admitted to a year-long relationship? What would happen to the actors, the staff who were working overnight and the production team who had everything staked on that project? The more I thought of it, the more I thought that shouldn't be what I do.'
Admissions of any romantic relationships within the South Korean entertainment industry are typically seen as scandalous, as celebrities' personal lives are often subject to intense scrutiny by fans.
The controversy, which has since rocked the South Korean entertainment industry, additionally involves accusations that Soo-hyun's agency, GoldMedalist, pressured Sae-ron to repay a debt she owed him prior to her death.
In 2022, Sae-ron faced a period of professional difficulty after a 2022 drunk driving incident, for which she received a court fine of 20 million won ($14,000).
Sae-ron's family claimed that GoldMedalist, to which she had also been signed from 2020 to 2022, covered her legal fines. However, GoldMedalist took legal action against Sae-ron for repayment and ignored her request for more time to come up with the money, her family alleged.
Soo-hyun denied those claims at Monday's press conference, saying that Sae-ron did not make 'the tragic choice because of me or my agency pressuring her over a debt.'
'Many people are suffering because of me,' Soo-hyun added, apologizing to his fans and staff. 'I also feel sorry that the late actress [Kim Sae-ron] isn't able to rest in peace.'
Soo-hyun's career has faced significant damage in the wake of the scandal. Several brands, including Prada and Korean cosmetics company Dinto, have since ended their partnerships with him. Meanwhile, Disney+ has reportedly paused a show starring Soo-hyun due to the controversy, according to local news agency Yonhap.
The actor's legal team has filed criminal complaints against Kim Sae-ron's family, as well as the YouTube channel, along with a civil lawsuit seeking damages of KRW12 billion (approximately $8.1 million).
The Independent has reached out to GoldMedalist for comment.

Katie Price's ex Alex Reid is 'spearheading a campaign' to take her down
Katie Price's ex-husband of one year Alex Reid is speaking out against the former glamour model in an incredibly dramatic fashion days after Peter Andre did the same. The mum-of-five, 47, started dating Alex hot off the heels from her split with Mysterious Girl hitmaker Peter, and they tied the knot in a Las Vegas ceremony in 2010. However, after just a year of marriage Alex and Katie called it quits. After Peter posted a shock statement on social media days ago accusing Katie of peddling lies for 16 years, Alex is taking a similar step and has announced he is 'spearheading a campaign' against her. 'Over the years you've seen countless stories by Katie Price directed at me, Peter Andre, Kieran Hayler, and others,' he said in a video posted on social media this evening. 'I am spearheading a campaign to expose the truth. This isn't about gossip, it's about evidence. It isn't about rumour, it's about reality. 'After years of silence the time has finally come to reveal all. This is bigger than one person. It's about honesty, accountability, and supporting those that have been silenced. 'The time for speculation is over. The truth will now be seen and heard.' This comes after a report yesterday that Katie is planning on releasing a three-part personal documentary to coincide with the 30-year anniversary of her becoming one of The Sun's page 3 models. A source told The Mirror that Alex and Kieran Hayler – who was with Katie from 2013 to March 2021 – are teaming up with lawyers to block her from featuring them on the show. A source told The Mirror: 'They feel like they have been backed into a corner and have no choice. 'They just want her to stop trashing them, and can't believe she is being given a platform.' Another source, close to Kieran, said that 'enough is enough' and the men are just looking to move on with their lives but 'can't trust anything' that Katie says. A spokesman for Kieran added: 'We are keeping all our options open. I can confirm Alex Reid is on the same page.' The outlet reported that they have been in contact via an intermediary over the documentary, which is being made by Louis Theroux's production company Mindhouse. It's due to be aired by Sky but lawyers for the pair are said to be urging the broadcaster to reconsider. Last week Kieran – who is dad to Katie's youngest kids Bunny, 11, and Jett, 12 – issued a public apology to Princess after she admitted: 'I wish I could have had a happier childhood.' Meanwhile, days ago Peter spoke out on Instagram with a cutting statement about his ex-wife Katie, who he met on I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here in 2004. 'For sixteen years, I have stayed silent in the face of repeated lies from my ex-wife and her family, out of respect for my children and loved ones, but staying silent has been incredibly frustrating. That ends today,' Peter said. He continued: 'The latest comments about my children's welfare and living arrangements compel me to set the record straight. 'For well-documented reasons, and for their safety, Junior and Princess came into my care in 2018 and remained with me until they reached adulthood. 'In 2019, the family courts issued a legally binding order to enforce this arrangement. I have never made this public before, out of respect for my children. More Trending 'In 2011 and 2015, publicly documented court cases, found my ex-wife had made false claims. She was ordered to pay substantial damages and legal costs, and to apologise, to me and my management. The same falsehoods are being repeated today. 'Unfortunately, there are many more lies and baseless accusations I have yet to address. Those will now be dealt with in the coming months.' In a statement to Metro, Katie's representative said in response: 'Kate is in a much better and clear headspace and is at peace with the situation, this was in the past and she doesn't feel the need to bring up tit for tat comments, but more importantly she's dealing with this the right way and it's now in her lawyers hands. 'Kate will no longer be gaslighted and bullied as she once was…' Got a story? Emily In Paris looking for 500 extras - but there's one surprising requirement
Emily In Paris bosses have issued a casting call as they search for 500 extras to appear in the next season, but there's a huge catch that could hold hopefuls back Emily In Paris bosses are looking for 500 extras to appear in its next season. The Netflix hit, which stars Lily Collins in the title role, normally shoots in the French capital but as filming for the next batch of episodes in Vienna after Emily moved to Rome, they have put out a call for several locals to act as background artists. The block of filming for the fifth season of the hit comedy drama in question will take place until next Monday, and as part of the story, Emily will take a trip to the Italian city with love interest Marcello Muratori, played by Eugenio Franceschini. Scenes will be shot at landmarks such as Hotel San Daniele, the Santi Giovanni and Paolo basilica and the Grand Canal amongst a host of others so legions of extras will be required in order to realistically pad out the heavy tourist areas. The casting call stipulates that, in order to be considered for a background part, women must be 'beautiful' and wear a dress size from size six to ten only. The call reads: "We are looking for beautiful extras, with a lean physique and size from 38 to 42." It comes after one huge TV star looks completely unrecognisable as she reveals latest facelift. 'Well-groomed, dry body, attractive' is also bluntly listed as criterion, and men must be size 46–52, and while 'all ages' will be considered, they must adhere to the physical requirements in order to be in with a chance of landing a role in the background. What's more, fans only have until midnight on 20 August to apply. Away from the cameras, Lily, welcomed Tove, six months, with Charlie McDonnell and her co-star Lucien Laviscount, recently admitted she's juggling motherhood with her leading-lady duties like a total pro as filming ramps up on the new season. Lucien, 32, who plays heartthrob Alfie in the series, says reuniting with the cast has been like no time has passed at all. 'It's so bizarre… life's been going on for everyone, but it only feels like a couple of weeks,' he says. 'We're getting the scripts through, it's like, 'Oh sh*t, this is crazy.' It's going off!' He also had us laughing talking about his Schweppes campaign — a cheeky nod to his Caribbean roots and growing up with ginger beer at his grandma's. 'Schweppes was like the fancy stuff we bring out at Christmas,' he shared, adding with a grin, 'It was like a perfect little match, to be honest.' Filming has taken place over the last few months and there is of drama ahead - both on screen and off - and Laviscount promises this season is one to watch. 'Everyone's really excited about what's to come,' he says. 'It's all there to play for, really.' Fizzing with energy, we say! After months away from filming Emily In Paris, Lily's return to set was always going to be a welcoming affair. But Netflix star brought the entire set to a standstill as she returned to work with her four month old daughter in tow. Cradling her in her arms, the 36-year-old actress looked the picture of happiness as she was surrounded by her cast mates and crew as they cooed over her baby girl, named Tove. And it looked as though the four month old was also in her element as she playfully smiled and sat comfortable in the arms of various pals of the actress. The new series of the show is being filmed in Rome instead of Paris as Lily's character is now creating a new life for herself in the historical city with her on-screen boyfriend Marcello, played by Eugenio Franceschini. Back in January, Lily and Charlie welcomed their daughter via surrogate. Sharing her happy news with her 29 million followers, Lily posted: "Welcome to the center [sic] of our world Tove Jane McDowell. Words will never express our endless gratitude for our incredible surrogate and everyone who helped us along the way. We love you to the moon and back again…"

TV fans predict 'Inbetweeners reunion' after stars tease new project
Fans of The Inbetweeners have been begging for a reunion of the Noughties comedy series since it came to an end in 2010—and some new photos have given everyone fresh hope. Starring Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, James Buckley, and Blake Harrison, The Inbetweeners became one of Channel 4's most successful shows of its era. Set in suburban southern England, The Inbetweeners focused on the hilarious and painfully awkward love lives (or lack thereof) of four ordinary boys in sixth form college. It ran for three seasons, produced 18 episodes in total, spawned two sequel films, and is still one of the most popular British comedy shows of all time. Such is the extent of its popularity in Britain that fans have begged for a reunion episode for 10 years now, following the release of The Inbetweeners Movie 2 in 2014. So, when one cast member took to Instagram with a cryptic post, it's safe to say he set the comments alight. On his social media, James teased that he and Joe are 'working on something', giving no further details to excited fans. The post was accompanied by a series of pictures of James and Joe, who dressed up in different outfits for a photoshoot and showed fans behind-the-scenes images of the get-together. Naturally, the comments section reacted anything but calmly to the post. MostlyEnders commented, 'Inbetweeners 3?' while Johnoo1992 demanded, 'We need an Inbetweeners reunion'. SkylarRossFelton said they 'couldn't wait' for a potential Inbetweeners 3, while JamesKeeleyy is also 'waiting' not-so patiently. Following the end of The Inbetweeners, stars Joe and James worked together on the sitcom White Gold, which followed a crew of window salesmen in 1980s Essex. White Gold ran for two seasons between 2017 and 2019 before it was axed by the BBC, with James admitting in 2020 he had no idea the show had been cancelled. Some fans who stayed with the lads until White Gold predicted that the window sales comedy would be making a return following the Insta pics, with that being the most recent project James and Joe worked on together. MichaelParkerus was clear about what he wants: 'I don't care if it's good [or bad], I'll watch anything that supports you four getting back together.' Since then, the four stars of The Inbetweeners have all been working on separate things, with the 2019 Fwends Reunited show still the last time any of them worked together. The reunion show was panned by fans, sadly, as people had expected the talk show to be a one-off sequel episode. Out of all the cast, though, work-wise, it looks like James and Joe are the closest, as this is not the first time they have worked on a new project in 2025, with the two teaming up for an Oasis-themed sketch in aid of Comic Relief. The sketch – titled Oasis: The Reunion – followed efforts to get the feuding brothers back on stage together and starred Martin Lewis as an accountant. More Trending Joe revealed last year that he, James, Simon, and Blake have all discussed the possibility of an Inbetweeners comeback, adding that they think it would be a 'nice thing to do'. 'We're all still around; we're all still in each other's lives. We all still like each other, and if it was something that came up, I think we would want to do it,' he said. View More » Joe continued: 'I feel like we all still really like each other. We've all been able to go away and get various monkeys off our backs, in terms of things that we felt we needed to do other than The Inbetweeners to prove something to ourselves.' Got a story?
