UIDAI to roll out biometric Aadhaar update for children through schools in phased manner

The Hindu20-07-2025
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is working on a project to initiate biometric updates for children through schools in a phased manner within the next two months, a top official of the Aadhaar-issuing authority said.
UIDAI Chief Executive Officer Bhuvnesh Kumar told PTI that more than seven crore children have not yet completed their mandatory biometric update (MBU), which is required after a child attains the age of five.
'UIDAI is working on a project to start updating the biometrics of children with parental consent through schools. We are at present testing the technology and it should be ready in 45-60 days,' Mr. Kumar said.
As per existing regulations, the MBU is essential for maintaining the accuracy and reliability of biometric data associated with Aadhaar. Failure to update the biometric details even after the age of seven may lead to deactivation of the Aadhaar number.
The update is free of cost if completed between the ages of five and seven. However, a prescribed fee of ₹100 applies if the update is done after seven years of age.
Mr. Kumar said an updated Aadhaar facilitates ease of living and enables the seamless availing of services such as school admissions, entrance examinations, scholarships, and Direct Benefit Transfer schemes, wherever applicable.
'We are planning to extend the same process of going through schools and colleges for a second MBU which is done after children attain the age of 15 years,' Mr. Kumar said.
Currently, Aadhaar enrolment for newborns and children under five years is carried out without capturing biometric details.
'Aadhaar is crucial for delivering benefits under several government schemes. We want children to get all the benefits at the right time. Through schools, we are trying to reach as many children in a convenient manner,' Mr. Kumar said.
Under the proposed project, UIDAI will provide biometric machines to each district, which will then be rotated from school to school to carry out the enrolment and update process.

Krumour steps up as Sebi strengthens norms on market rumour verification

Agency: New Delhi, Jul 27 (PTI) Krumour, a platform developed by media insights firm Kanalytics, is emerging as a go-to solution for companies to comply with regulatory norms that make it mandatory for large listed companies to confirm, deny, or clarify market rumours. Designed to monitor and analyse news across print, digital, television, and social media in multiple languages, Krumour helps companies identify potentially price-sensitive information and respond swiftly. It combines human expertise with algorithm-based monitoring and links media activity with real-time market price movements (MPM). The platform tracks media chatter across diverse channels and correlates it with MPM to detect potential material events. This allows compliance teams to act before regulators step in, reducing the risk of regulatory penalties and protecting market integrity. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), in May 2024, notified an amendment to the Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements (LODR) rules, requiring large listed companies to confirm or deny any market rumour reported in the mainstream media within 24 hours of such reporting. The framework aims to protect retail investors, who are often vulnerable to losses caused by share price volatility. Following this, the top 100 listed entities began verifying market rumours from June 1, 2024, while an additional 150 listed entities (top 250) followed suit from December 2024 onwards. Market analysts believe that consistently monitoring stock price movements to determine if a material price movement has occurred — and scanning all mediums, including global sources — requires specialised expertise and infrastructure. Ashutosh, CEO of Kanalytics, said, 'A good solution needs trained talent, data, and technology. Offer credible, actionable end-to-end solution. You flood clients with data empowerment on time within minutes." 'Krumour is built for compliance and tuned for intelligence with news from pre-market to post-market hours through a hybrid of human curation and algorithmic filters. No wonder over 30 of the top 150 listed companies trust us today," he added. PTI SP TRB view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Maharashtra agro corporation to introduce processing units for farmers to manage excess crops

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jul 27 (PTI) The state-owned Maharashtra Agro Industries Development Corporation (MAIDC) plans to procure mobile processing units to help farmers manage excess production of certain crops by enhancing their shelf life by 12-18 months, an official has said. Oversupply in the market forces farmers to sell their produce, particularly the perishable ones, at throwaway prices or even discard them. The MAIDC initiative aims at ensuring good returns to the growers, said the managing director of the corporation, Mangesh Gondavale. The official said they will procure two machines and deploy them in two districts by the next monsoon season on a pilot basis. Each machine can process 16-18 products and can be customised depending on the region, he said. Processing includes washing, peeling, drying, chopping, slicing and liquefaction. For instance, tomatoes can be converted into puree, while onions can be dried for longer storage. 'Sometimes, the overall production of a crop in a region becomes high. To ensure that farmers do not incur losses in such a situation, we will introduce two portable processing units,' Gondavale said. These machines can be taken directly to farms, saving farmers transportation costs, he said. 'Each unit can process 150-200 tonnes of produce per day and is equipped for specialised packaging that extends shelf life by 12-18 months,' he added. Farmers can then take the product to the market when it is favourable to them. 'Also, processed crops fetch better prices,' said Gondavale. A Rajasthan-based startup founded by an IIT graduate will provide the processing units, each costing about ₹ 1.5 crore, Gondavale said. 'We have done a survey of the types of crops that these units can process. We will use the machines on an experimental basis in two districts by the next Kharif season. We will then propose to the district administrations to procure the units to help farmers in their region,' he added.
