JoJo Siwa shares poignant 'self-reflection' post as she addresses her sexuality
Celebrity Big Brother star JoJo Siwa has used the start of Pride Month to share a personal reflection on identity, love, and self-acceptance
JoJo Siwa opened Pride Month 2025 with a heartfelt post to her followers, offering a message of love and self-acceptance amid her new romance with Chris Hughes. 'Happy day 1 of the happiest month,' the 22-year-old wrote on Instagram Stories.
'What I have learned over the last 22 years is that pride is all about love, acceptance and celebration. No matter who you are or what you are, you are you, you are beautiful, and you are perfect. Everyone's story is different and everyone's journey is different.'
Calling love 'just love,' Siwa praised its simplicity and added: 'Happy pride to the beautiful LGBTQIA+ community, to the allies, and to all that exist :).' Earlier this year, the former child star made headlines when she began dating Celebrity Big Brother UK co-star Chris, 32.
During the show's 24th season, she shared a personal revelation: 'I've always told myself I'm a lesbian, but I think being here, I've realised: 'Oh no, I'm not a lesbian, I'm queer.' I think that's really cool. I'm switching letters.'
She later told Us Weekly she hadn't expected that moment to air: 'That was one of those conversations actually that I was having that I was like, 'This will never see the light of day.' I don't mind that it did, because I actually think it starts a very beautiful conversation of queer. I think queer joy is so special and so magical.'
Explaining her evolving understanding of identity, Siwa said she's no longer interested in strict labels: 'Queer is a beautiful umbrella term for the LGBTQIA community. I think that for me to be a woman and say I have a non-binary partner, but then also say I'm a lesbian is crazy. I just realized within myself that the way my eyes are to the world, I think I'm just queer.
"It has nothing to do with anything besides that. It's nothing to be ashamed of. The world is going crazy with that one though. It flabbergasts me.'
Prior to her relationship with Hughes, Siwa briefly dated Australian creator Kath Ebbs, who is non-binary. Their split reportedly happened during the Big Brother wrap party in April.
Siwa has also been outspoken about the discomfort she feels with certain language. After telling Yahoo! Life in 2022 that she 'doesn't like the word 'lesbian,'' she clarified on TikTok: 'I never said that 'lesbian' was a dirty word. It's not a bad word, it's not a slur, it's especially not a word that I am ashamed of saying or ashamed of identifying as by any means.'
In that interview, she compared the term to words people find unappealing simply by sound: 'I don't like the word itself. It's just like a lot... It's like the word moist. It's just like… ugh!' She added on TikTok, 'I don't hate the word lesbian… it's not the word that flows off the tongue for me, if that makes sense.'

Navy will rename the USNS Harvey Milk, named for LGBTQ rights pioneer
A Navy vessel named after celebrated gay rights activist and Navy veteran Harvey Milk will no longer carry his name. NBC News confirmed with the Navy that the USNS Harvey Milk, a fleet replenishment oiler, will be renamed. No reason was given. The news comes during Pride Month, the dedicated time to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements and contributions of the LGBTQ community. After years of devoted activism in San Francisco and across California, Milk became one of the country's first openly gay elected officials, winning a position on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. In 1978, he and Mayor George Moscone were fatally shot at City Hall. His killer, Dan White, a former city supervisor, was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to less than eight years in prison in 1979, sparking a mass protest that turned violent. Milk was portrayed by Sean Penn in the 2008 film 'Milk,' for which Penn won an Academy Award. The USNS Harvey Milk is a 2021 vessel designed to support other ships at sea. The USNS Harvey Milk was introduced in a class of several ships named after civil rights figures, including the USNS Thurgood Marshall, USNS Ruth Bader Ginsberg, USNS Dolores Huerta, USNS Harriet Tubman, USNS Cesar Chavez and USNS Lucy Stone. The group, or class, of ships is collectively called the John Lewis class, honoring the Georgia congressman and civil rights icon who died in 2020. Milk served in the Navy from 1951 to 1955, according to the National Archives. On the USS Chanticleer and the USS Kittiwake, he was an operations officer during the Korean War. In January, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a directive instructing the Pentagon and U.S. military services to abandon any cultural or awareness months. It was titled 'Identity Months Dead at DoD,' citing Women's History Month, LGBTQ Pride Month and Black History Month. Hegseth's Jan. 31 directive said: 'Our unity and purpose are instrumental to meeting the Department's warfighting mission. Efforts to divide the force — to put one group ahead of another — erode camaraderie and threaten mission execution.' Earlier this year, Hegseth also issued an order to restore the name of the North Carolina military base back to Fort Bragg. Its namesake was a Confederate general who owned slaves, and in 2023, the base was renamed Fort Liberty. Hegseth said the new Fort Bragg would be named to honor Pfc. Roland L. Bragg, a World War II veteran who earned a Silver Star and a Purple Heart.

Hegseth orders US navy to strip Harvey Milk name from ship amid Pride month
The US defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, has ordered the US navy to strip the name of prominent gay rights activist and navy veteran Harvey Milk from a ship during the middle of June – a month meant to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community – according to multiple outlets. The order to rename the USNS Harvey Milk, a fleet replenishment oiler, was in a memorandum from the Office of the Secretary of the Navy, which was reported on and viewed by and CBS. Those reports note that the navy secretary, John Phelan, was instructed to strip the ship of its name by Hegseth. The timing of the announcement, which comes during Pride month, was reportedly intentional. The renaming is being done to ensure 'alignment with president and SECDEF objectives and SECNAV priorities of reestablishing the warrior culture', referring to Donald Trump, Hegseth and Phelan, per the memorandum. The decision to rename the ship will be publicized on 13 June, per The Guardian has contacted the defense department for comment. The vessel was initially named after Milk in 2016 during the Barack Obama administration. Milk was a prominent gay rights activist who served in the US Navy during the Korean war. He later went on to run for office in California where he won a seat on the San Francisco board of supervisors. As one of the US's first openly gay politicians, Milk became a forefront figure of the gay rights movement across the country before his assassination in 1978 by a former city supervisor. In addition to renaming USNS Harvey Milk, the defense department plans to rename other vessels that have been given names of various icons throughout American history. Documents reviewed by CBS showed that vessels on the US navy's 'recommended list' include USNS Thurgood Marshall, USNS Ruth Bader Ginsburg, USNS Harriet Tubman, USNS Dolores Huerta, USNS Lucy Stone, USNS Cesar Chavez and USNS Medgar Evers. In response to reports of the defense department renaming its vessels, the California representative and former House speaker Nancy Pelosi said: 'In San Francisco, we take great pride that our Harvey's name adorns a mighty ship among a new class of navy vessels – named for the conscience of the Congress, John Lewis – which honor titans in the fight for freedom. The names of those who fought for civil rights and human rights bring luster to these ships – as their leadership brought luster to America.' She went on to say: 'The reported decision by the Trump administration to change the names of the USNS Harvey Milk and other ships in the John Lewis-class is a shameful, vindictive erasure of those who fought to break down barriers for all to chase the American dream. Our military is the most powerful in the world – but this spiteful move does not strengthen our national security or the 'warrior' ethos. Instead, it is a surrender of a fundamental American value: to honor the legacy of those who worked to build a better country.'
