"Breaking tradition of corruption, mismanagement": Delhi CM Rekha Gupta reviews Kanwar Yatra preparations

India Gazette2 days ago
New Delhi [India], July 12 (ANI): The Delhi Government on Saturday held a review meeting for the preparations in view of the Kanwar Yatra. According to CM Rekha Gupta all the preparations for the event have been made and electricity up to 1200 units in the Kanwar camp have been made free.
The Delhi CM said that her government has broken the traditions, corruption, and mismanagement of the previous regime. CM Gupta stated that the work done by the Delhi government was 'unprecedented' in itself.
'Breaking the tradition of corruption of the previous governments, breaking their tradition of mismanagement, breaking the tradition of troubling the public, the work done by the Delhi government regarding the Kanwar Yatra this time was unprecedented in itself...All the preparations have been done. All the arrangements for the toilets, which we are going to provide in the Kanwar camps, have been done. We have made electricity up to 1200 units free for the Kanwar camps', Rekha Gupta told reporters.
Furthermore, the Delhi CM noted that the people in the national capital are very 'happy' and 'welcome' gates have been put up at all the entries of Delhi to welcome the Kanwar Yatris.
Rekha Gupta informed that the government had called the people of the Ramlila Sangh and addressed their problems.
'The people are very happy today. Similarly, all the traffic and police arrangements have been made. Welcome gates are being installed at all the entries of Delhi and the government is fully prepared to welcome the devotees of Shiva...In the same way, we have called all the people of Ramlila, Ramlila Sangh, who are associated with the Ramlilas and have listened to their problems today and in the same way, the Delhi government will do all the work for Ramlilas', she said.
AAP Delhi State President Saurabh Bharadwaj on Wednesday criticised the BJP-led Delhi administration for politicising the sacred Kanwar Yatra by defunding long-standing community-run camps and redirecting funds to BJP-backed and affiliated organisations.
Addressing a press conference, senior AAP leader and Delhi State President Saurabh Bharadwaj said, 'Every year, we supported all Kanwar camps--irrespective of their political affiliations--by arranging tents, lights, sound systems, furniture, fans, coolers, music systems, and stages. The Kanwar committees only had to focus on 'seva' and managing the prasad distribution. This model ran smoothly for years. I can say with full responsibility that it never mattered whether a Kanwar committee was aligned with Congress, BJP, or AAP--our government helped everyone equally.' (ANI)

Groundwork of Swargate-Katraj underground Metro line yet to begin nearly one year after approval

1 2 3 Pune: Actual groundwork on the 5.5-km-long Swargate-Katraj Metro line has remained a non-starter almost a year after it was approved in Aug 2024. The addition of two stations on the stretch as an afterthought necessitated re-tendering for the entire project. The plan was initially sanctioned with three stations. Later, two more Metro stations were included at Balajinagar and Market Yard, taking the total to five stations on the route. Updating TOI about the most recent status of the line, Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) officials said they are in the process of finishing the re-tendering work and appointing agencies to execute the project in the next two months. However, work is likely to begin only after the monsoon in Oct 2025. In Tarn Taran, stakes go beyond bypoll for jailed MP Amritpal Singh's party

Tarn Taran: For NSA detainee and Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh 's father, Tarsem Singh, his party's interest in contesting the Tarn Taran assembly seat bypoll is both symbolic and strategic. "Bhai Amritpal's followers want his party to contest to express support for him and his cause," he says. The seat, left vacant after the death of AAP MLA Dr Kashmir Singh Sohal, has emerged as a critical political test for Tarsem — not just for votes, but for sentiment. Amritpal, lodged in Assam's Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act (NSA), had secured a surprise victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Khadoor Sahib despite being incarcerated. One of the nine assembly segments under the Khadoor Sahib constituency is Tarn Taran, where Amritpal received 44,703 votes in 2024. The math, Tarsem believes, favours Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De). In the 2022 assembly elections, Dr Sohal had won by getting around 52,000 votes. But numbers are only part of the equation. For 'Team Amritpal', the bypoll is about maintaining symbolic momentum. The panthic image cultivated by Amritpal — with clear echoes of the slain militant leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale — is central to his appeal. Amritpal came to prominence in Sep 2022, controversially taking charge of Waris Punjab De, a group founded by the late actor-activist Deep Sidhu. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Upto 15% Discount for Salaried Individuals ICICI Pru Life Insurance Plan Get Quote Undo His hardline image, vocal support for Khalistan, and a campaign urging youth to reject drugs and modern vices earned him mass attention and state scrutiny. The breaking point came in Feb 2023, when he and his supporters carried the Guru Granth Sahib — considered the living Guru in Sikhism — to Ajnala police station in Amritsar to free an aide. This act, seen by many as sacrilegious, triggered a statewide crackdown. After evading arrest for 35 days, he was captured in Rode — the same village Bhindranwale hailed from — and subsequently jailed in Assam. Yet, in 2024, his Lok Sabha win was widely interpreted as a public rebuke of the govt's crackdown. Keeping Amritpal's panthic image in mind, Waris Punjab De initially approached Paramjit Kaur Khalra, widow of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, to contest the bypoll, but she declined. Focus then shifted to Satwant Kaur, who is part of the five-member committee opposing Sukhbir Badal's hold on Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). Waris Punjab De is banking on its panthic image in the bypoll. Tarn Taran's tilet for panthic candidates is visible in the last five assembly elections. The seat elected Shiromani Akali Dal's (SAD) Harmeet Singh Sandhu in 2002, 2007 and 2012. In the last two elections, he lost, but was a close second, as he got 45,156 votes in 2017 and 39,347 in 2022. AAP, for its part, is banking on governance and development. Party spokesperson Shashivir Sharma said, "We have our work to show for it. Our high command will present a strong and dedicated candidate focused on the development of Tarn Taran. What other parties do is their own business." While the date of the bypoll is yet to be announced, Khalsa University vice-chancellor Mehal Singh remarked that development and drug eradication would likely outweigh identity politics. "There was a time when people voted for Amritpal, but that may not be repeated," he said. Box Both ran anti-drug campaigns Both AAP and Amritpal have placed anti-drugs campaigns at the heart of their messaging — though the methods differed. AAP recently launched a broad crackdown on the drug trade, while Amritpal's grassroots campaign in 2022-2023 urged youth to embrace traditional Sikh values and reject addiction. Ultimately, for Amritpal's party, the stakes go beyond one seat. Winning Tarn Taran would be a step toward consolidating Amritpal's symbolic authority and sustaining a panthic narrative. For his opponents, the bypoll will be a litmus test of how deep his influence really runs and whether it ends at the prison gates.

Tripura CM slams left front for using Janajati community for vote bank politics

Agartala (Tripura) [India], July 15 (ANI): Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said on Monday that the development of the country is not possible without developing the Janajati community. In view of this, he wrote a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to address some of the problems faced by the Bru people in the state. The Chief Minister made these remarks while addressing the District Level Mega Campaign on Dharti Aaba Jan Bhagidari Abhiyan at Gobinda Community Hall, Jirania Sub-Division. He criticised the previous left-front-led government of the state for using the Janajati community as a vote bank. 'They (CPM led govt) used the Janajati community for vote bank politics. Now, the BJP government always thinks about the people and the development of the Janajati community by making them self-reliant. The way PM Modi connects with people through Mann Ki Baat, I doubt if any leader in the world connects like that. We are public representatives, but we must not forget who we are here for; we must work for the people,' CM Saha said. He highlighted the efforts of the BJP government since 2018 to improve their condition. Highlighting the importance of helping the backwards classes, the Tripura CM noted that several community members have also held high offices, including President Murmu. 'If we can't develop the backwards class people, then the development of the country is not possible. PM Modi has been working for the Janajati people since 2014. Our President of India also belongs to the Janajati community, and one Janajati--who belongs to our royal family--is the Governor of Telangana. All such things have been possible because of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,' he said. 'What PM Modi says, he does. We really feel proud to have such a Prime Minister. He has been working to make the country stronger and to ensure a safe future for the next generation,' Manik Saha added. CM Saha further said that in Tripura, the present state government is providing various beneficiary schemes to the people, ranging from drinking water, hostels for Janajati students, tribal multipurpose marketing centres, and giving land pattas. Under the Dharti Aaba Jan Bhagidari, 779 Gram Panchayats and Village Councils will benefit, with 20 departments involved in the initiative, the CM emphasised. During the event, Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy, Tribal Welfare Minister Bikas Debbarma, social worker Bipin Debbarma, West District Magistrate Dr Vishal Kumar, Dr K Sashikumar (Secretary, Tribal Welfare), West District ki SP Kiran Kumar, and others were present.
