Microscopic plastic levels far higher in those who suffer strokes, study finds

ST. PAUL, Minn., April 22 (UPI) -- Patients who suffered strokes, mini-strokes or temporary blindness had levels of "nanoplastic" particles in their necks far higher than in healthy people, an abstract of a small-scale study released Tuesday shows.
The abstract, released by the American Heart Association at the start of a scientific conference this week in Baltimore, is adding to a growing list of "troubling" evidence linking vascular disease to nanoplastics, the medical group says.
Nanoplastic fragments are even smaller than "microplastics" and can be absorbed into the body, penetrating biological barriers as they accumulate. While microplastics are loosely defined as particles smaller than 5 millimeters in diameter, nanoplastics are far smaller -- typically thought of as less than 1 micrometer, or 1,000 nanometers.
These tiny fragments of plastic come from products like water bottles, food packaging and synthetic fabrics, and have been found concentrated in major organs, including the lungs, heart, liver and even the placenta, prompting scientists to warn that evidence is mounting they pose a risk to cardiovascular health.
In March 2024, an Italian study determined that patients with carotid artery plaque in which "microplastics and nanoplastics," or MNPs, were detected had a higher risk of a myocardial infarction, stroke or death from any cause at 34 months of follow-up than those in whom the fragments were not detected.
Meanwhile, University of New Mexico Health Sciences researchers in February revealed they had detected microplastics in human brains at much higher concentrations than in other organs. Even more alarmingly, the plastic accumulation appears to be growing over time, increasing 50% over just eight years.
In the current study of fewer than 50 participants, University of New Mexico researchers examined carotid artery samples taken from three groups of patients: those who had artery-clogging plaque in the neck and experienced stroke, mini-stroke or temporary loss of vision; those who had plaque but did not suffer such symptoms; and those who had healthy carotids with no plaque.
They found that the group that suffered strokes had MNP concentration levels 51 times higher than those who had no plaque build-ups, while those who had plaque but didn't suffer strokes had levels 16 times higher than those with no plaque.
The study has yet to be peer-reviewed or published in a medical journal, but the results nonetheless provide a "very interesting and troubling" look into the possible relationship between MNPs and vascular disease, said Dr. Karen Furie, volunteer vice chair of the hear association's Stroke Brain Health Science Subcommittee.
Furie also is a professor of neurology at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University in Rhode Island.
"To date, we have not considered exposure to plastic micronanoparticles a modifiable risk factor for stroke," Furie said in an AHA-issued statement, adding that although research efforts are still a very early stage, the findings point to nanoparticles as "a novel potential target for stroke prevention."
The study's lead author told UPI that while it remains unknown if nanoplastics can actually cause stroke or other illness and that the small study has limitations, the results showing such a sharp, sizable swing in plastics levels between those who suffered strokes and those who didn't raises eyebrows.
Dr. Ross Clark, a vascular surgeon and researcher at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque, said his findings largely mirror the results of last year's Italian study, but "with some additional layers of nuance."
"It's pretty compelling to see a 16-fold greater presence of nanoplastics in asymptomatic carotid plaques compared to a normal, healthy artery, and a 51-fold increase in those who are having symptoms," he said. "So what is it about those symptoms and the plastics? Do they have anything to do with them directly?
"The answer is it's too early to tell. But it's interesting that those two groups are really different."
Clark said he suspects the interaction between microplastics and the cardiovascular system is complex and will not be easily definable by obvious measures such as looking at inflammation.
"We actually didn't find any correlation between the amount of plastics in the plaque and biomarkers of inflammation," he said. "So it's not just as easy as saying, 'Having microplastics in these plaques causes inflammation.' It's not that simple. There's definitely something more nuanced going on here, which is going to take quite some time to unravel."
Dr. Isaac George, surgical director of the Heart Valve Center at New York Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, noted last year it's important to remember that no direct, causal relationship has yet been found between microplastics and heart disease.
"This doesn't show that having particles in your body forms atheromas [artery plaque], but it is a very strong association, and I think it's just more evidence that plastic has invaded our whole lifestyle," he said in a video posted after the Italian study was released.
"I think the moral of the story is we really need to be careful and be aware of the exposure we have to plastics and try to reduce it as much as possible."
Dr. Gregory Katz, a clinical cardiologist at NYU Langone Health and an assistant professor at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, agreed the study results are "concerning, just like basically all of the research on micro and nanoplastics and human health outcomes has been."
But, he added, it remains difficult to answer the biggest questions about the potential dangers of nanoplastics exposure.
"It's impossible with a study like this to know whether it's plastics driving bad health outcomes or whether people who are sicker tend to accumulate more plastic and that their underlying condition drives those outcomes," he told UPI.
"Second, this doesn't tell us anything about exposure -- where is the plastic coming from? Is it related to our volitional choices or is related to ambient exposure as a consequence of being alive in the year 2025?
"This type of limitation on exposure is a really big deal when you think about how we should or should not change our behaviors."
The next steps in quantifying the effects of nanoplastics on the heart depend on how quickly new methods can be developed to study them -- the field so new that there are currently very few protocols.
For example, it's challenging to measure the particles, especially those made of polyethylene, which produces a confusingly similar signature to certain kinds of body fat in gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.
"Even to this day, we're still refining those techniques," Clark said.
Katz said the next step in establishing the science "isn't so much proving causation that micro and nanoplastics cause human disease -- although we certainly haven't proven it. It's helping to understand the exposures that drive accumulation of these substance in our bodies because that's where we can take action."

There have been several recent studies linking ultra-processed foods (UPFs)—which contain ingredients and chemicals that aren't generally available to a home cook—to a variety of health issues, from cardiovascular disease to risk of premature death. "High UPF intake is widespread and detrimental," says Grace Derocha, RDN, CDCES,spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. "Nearly 60% of U.S. calories come from UPFs—and adolescents fare worst, correlating with poorer heart health scores." But before you clean out your pantry, there is some nuance when it comes to processed foods, according to new research from the American Heart Association. And in fact, some can actually be beneficial to your health. Meet Our Expert Grace Derocha, RDN, CDCES,spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics What the Research Shows Regarding Ultra-Processed Foods The American Health Association found that processed foods that contain additives and chemicals often have other not-so-great ingredients that put you at risk of cardiovascular disease, chronic diseases, and death, including unhealthy fats and added sugars and salts. And processed food takes up more than 70% of what's available at your local grocery store, so it can be harder than you'd expect to avoid them. The American Heart Association recommends limiting your UPF intake and focusing your diet on vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds, healthy oils, and lean proteins. But in this new research, they've taken a stab at defining which UPFs are the most dangerous to your health—and which ones aren't. "Not all UPFs are equally harmful: Items like whole-grain cereals or yogurt may carry lower or even inverse cardiovascular disease risk compared with sugary beverages or processed meats," Derocha says. "The science recognizes the complexity—UPF is a broad category, and context matters. We should differentiate between 'unhealthy UPFs' and more wholesome packaged items." Just follow these tips—based on the new research—to help you create a shopping list that'll focus on your health. Opt for "Green-Flag" Processed Foods One of the reasons that ultra-processed foods have proliferated? They make it much simpler to get dinner on the table—just heat and eat. But you don't have to rely on heavily processed foods to simplify your food prep. "Convenience doesn't equal compromise," Derocha says. "Smart choices like frozen produce, canned staples, and wisely selected UPFs can make healthy eating accessible." Among the "green-flagged" processed foods that are considered healthier: Lightly salted and flavored nuts, seeds, and legumes Low-sodium canned beans and legumes Low-sodium canned tuna, salmon, or chicken, packed in water Unsweetened dried fruit Low-sodium whole grain breads and crackers High fiber cereal with minimal sweeteners Plant-based meat and dairy alternatives like soy milk and tofu Frozen produce There are also a few "caution" items that are considered moderately healthy, such as canned fruit in light syrup or juice, hard cheeses, and low-sodium and/or low-fat canned soups or canned beans that contain salt. Minimize "Red-Flag" Foods The American Heart Association chart reviews both processed and unprocessed foods for their potential impacts on cardiovascular health—which includes a list of red-flagged foods that could put your health at risk. "Identifying high-risk UPF subgroups is essential to balancing nutritional goals with the need for accessible and appealing food options," according to the study. "Most UPFs overlap with foods high in saturated fat, added sugars, and sodium, which are already targets for cardiometabolic risk reduction." Processed meats like bacon, chicken nuggets, sausage, and hot dogs, and sugar-sweetened beverages are high on the list of red-flag foods, but you probably won't be surprised by what is on the list: Processed meats, like chicken nuggets, sausage, hot dogs Sugar-sweetened beverages Sweets like cookies, candies, and fruit snacks Cheese products White bread, tortillas, and rolls Ice cream and other dairy-based desserts Frozen meals that contain things on this list (like pizza or instant noodles) Canned fruit in syrup Tortilla or potato-based chips But the paper also called out some minimally processed foods that could be harmful to your health. That list includes: Meat and dairy products, including red meat, pork, butter, beef tallow, and sour cream Natural sweeteners, like sugar, honey, and maple syrup Sweetened dried or canned fruit and brined vegetables French fries Crackers 100% fruit juice Tropical oils, like palm and coconut oil Some of these foods are often on lists of healthier options, and Derocha notes that they may be more of a "sometimes" food, rather than a wholesale ban. "While honey is minimally processed, it's still a concentrated source of sugar—making it less heart-friendly than, say, whole-grain bread or canned beans that offer fiber and nutrients. It's less about processing level and more about overall contributions to cardiovascular health." Make Healthier Swaps If you're looking to reduce your ultra-processed food intake, there are some easy swaps that are just as delicious—and won't raise your health risks. "Try sparkling water flavored with fruit instead of soda; make yogurt parfaits with plain yogurt and fruit instead of pre-sweetened cartons," Derocha suggests. And check the ingredient list. "Look for UPFs that include whole grains, legumes, yogurt, or nuts—not just isolated additives," Derocha says. "Cereals, yogurts, and whole-grain products are among UPFs associated with lower cardiovascular risk." You'll also want to limit or avoid foods that have a huge list of chemicals among their ingredients. "Favor foods with fewer, recognizable ingredients—avoid long lists of additives, emulsifiers, sweeteners," Derocha says. Find Other Ways to Speed Up Meal Prep Choosing minimally processed building blocks like frozen fruits and veggies, canned beans, and frozen whole grains can help you get your meal on the plate faster, Derocha says. "You can also meal prep simple components," she suggests. "Roast a batch of chicken or bake vegetables ahead, then mix and match throughout the week." You can also consider batch cooking, in which you make a larger batch of a favorite dish and freeze the leftovers for a busy weeknight. "Cook once, and eat twice," Derocha says. "Allowing the freezer to be your friend is a great way to be in the driver's seat of what you are consuming." The results of Washington, D.C.-based Gallup's new survey released Wednesday suggest the self-reported drinking habits of many Americans is down to a new record low of 54% after "consecutive declines" since 1939 when the firm began tracking such behavior. The results of Gallup's annual Consumption Habits survey from July 7-21 supported data indicating that drinkers reported drinking less, and 53% of respondents say they believe that even a few drinks is bad for a person. Gallup experts are suggesting that, for the first time, it's now the majority view of the population that even moderate alcohol drinking is bad for one's health. Even John Gramlich, an associate research director at the nonpartisan Washington think tank Pew Research Center, called it "fascinating new data" in a social media post early Wednesday morning. The downward trend of drinking among young American adults has only accelerated from 59% in 2023 to 50% in the latest Gallup surveys. Previous Gallup results from 1997 to 2023 revealed at least 60% of Americans reported being casual alcohol drinkers. That number fluctuated for a few years before landing at its current 54% in the latest survey results. Gallup's historic data highlighted a 58% use of alcohol among Americans in its initial 1939 poll only 10 years after the economically devastating October 1929 stock market crash, but a one-time low in 1958 of 55%. Gallup said the belief that drinking is detrimental is now gaining traction with older adults, too. From 2023-2025, there was a 5% drop to 56% among people age 55 and older. The World Health Organization noted earlier last month that a separate 2022 Gallup Poll found strong public support among respondents for higher taxes on alcohol, tobacco and "sugary drinks." "Why? Because these products can harm your health & smart taxes help reduce consumption & fund better healthcare," the WHO said on social media.

Foot positioning while walking can reduce stress on a person's knee joint, researchers reported Tuesday in The Lancet Rheumatology. People trained to angle their feet slightly inward or outward from their natural alignment experienced slower degeneration of the cartilage cushion inside their aching knees, results show. They also reported greater reductions in knee pain and better knee function after a year, researchers said. "Altogether, our findings suggest that helping patients find their best foot angle to reduce stress on their knees may offer an easy and fairly inexpensive way to address early-stage osteoarthritis," said co-lead researcher Valentina Mazzoli, an assistant professor of radiology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine in New York City. This strategy could lower patients' reliance on painkillers and delay the need for knee replacement surgery, Mazzoli added in a news release. For the study, researchers recruited 68 people with knee osteoarthritis and recorded their gait while walking on a treadmill. A computer program simulated their walking patterns and calculated the maximum stress they were placing on their knees. The research team also generated computer models of four new foot positions angled inward or outward by 5 or 10 degrees and estimated which would best reduce stress on each person's knees. Participants then were randomly divided into two groups. Half were trained in six sessions to walk with the foot angle ideal to them, and the other half were told to continue walking normally. Overall, those who adjusted their gait reduced maximum loading in their knees by 4%, while those who kept their normal stride increased loading by more than 3%. Further, those taught the new foot position experienced a 2.5-point reduction on a 10-point pain scale, equivalent to the effect of over-the-counter painkillers like NSAIDs and acetaminophen, researchers said. "These results highlight the importance of personalizing treatment instead of taking a one-size-fits-all approach to osteoarthritis," Mazzoli said. "While this strategy may sound challenging, recent advances in detecting the motion of different body parts using artificial intelligence may make it easier and faster than ever before." AI software that estimates joint loading using smartphone videos is now available, allowing doctors to perform a gait analysis without specialized lab equipment, researchers noted. The team next plans to test whether those AI tools can indeed help identify the best walking method for knee arthritis patients, Mazzoli said.
