Musical movie Christmas Karma stars The Big Bang Theory's Kunal Nayyar as a contemporary Scrooge, called Mr Sood, who is haunted by three ghosts of Christmas past, present and future, played by Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria, Pose actor Billy Porter and British singer Boy George.
Bend It Like Beckham's Gurinder Chadha hopes the audience will be invested in the transformation of Mr Sood, and his chance to be a part of a society that doesn't allow 'Scrooges, twisted and shaped by prejudice, to grow.'

Former EastEnders actor Danny Dyer, singer Pixie Lott, Bridgerton star Charithra Chandran, Downton Abbey actor Hugh Bonneville and Sanditon's Leo Suter also star in the movie.
Chadha, 65, said in her director's statement: 'Our Scrooge, called Sood, is a rich British Indian who despises poor people and refugees in particular.'
'Sood has decided that immense wealth brings him status and standing, so to hell with the poor, unemployed and disenfranchised who didn't work as hard as him to get where he is.'
The movie 'is very true to the original text and sentiment', according to Chadha, and will teach audiences 'the urgent lesson of how prejudice, poverty and division in all its forms shapes Sood and our society today'.
The British-Indian director added: 'A hundred and eighty-two years later, Dickens' novella still resonates globally in today's sometimes harsh world.'
She also said she was inspired by a family member, who lost his home in Uganda as a child, and came to Britain around Christmas time, arriving to a hostile welcome as a refugee.

'For years he didn't feel Christmas was for him and the hardships he faced as a child left him despising it,' she said.
She added: 'For me, Christmas Karma is a legacy film with a humane message that will live on long after I do.'
Soap star Dyer, 48, plays a London cabbie, while Bonneville, 61, plays the ghost of Jacob Marley.
Influenced by gospel, bhangra, Christmas carols, rap and classic pop, the soundtrack features music from Take That's Gary Barlow, former All Saints member Shaznay Lewis, and England-based Punjabi bhangra singer Malkit Singh.
Other adaptations of the classic novel, published in 1843, include a 2019 BBC mini series starring Adolescence actor Stephen Graham, written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.
On stage Doctor Who's Christopher Eccleston played Scrooge in a retelling of the story at the Old Vic in London between November 2023 and January 2024.
There are also a number of film adaptations including Scrooged (1988), starring Bill Murray as an angry TV network president and modern-day Scrooge, and The Muppets Christmas Carol (1992).
The film is in cinemas from November 14.

EastEnders spoilers: First look at Ben Mitchell and Callum Highway's heart-wrenching reunion at family funeral - as pair share a kiss in passionate scenes

A first look at Ben Mitchell and Callum Highway's heart-wrenching reunion in upcoming scenes of EastEnders has been revealed. The pair, who tied the knot in 2021, see each other for the first time in over a year and share a passionate kiss at a family funeral. Earlier this month it was revealed that Ben (Max Bowden) and Stuart Highway (Ricky Champ) would be returning to Walford because of heartbreaking loss. In a selection of new pictures Ben, Stuart and Callum (Tony Clay) can be seen paying their respects in a graveyard to Callum and Stuart's late dad Jonno (Richard Graham). Ben and Callum are over the moon to see each other and are seen locking lips surrounded by a number gravestones. The jailed mechanic, who is on prison release, can be see walking around with visible cuffs around his hands. The snaps also see Stuart, who left the Square in 2022 alongside his wife Raine (Tanya Franks) and their son Roland to start a new, look overcome with emotion as she remembers his father. Johnny Carter (Charlie Suff) is also among those from Walford paying their respects. Ben's appearance on the soap comes as a shock as he was put behind bars last year after he was arrested for credit card fraud in March 2024. He nicked someone's credit card while over in the US back in 2023 in a bid to make Lola Pearce-Brown (Danielle Harold) well again. As fans will remember, Lola passed away from a brain tumor in May 2023, after being diagnosed with a glioblastoma multiforme in October the following year. Ben got his hands on another person's card to try, after his own cards became blocker, to pay for a medical trial for Danielle. The crook wanted Ritchie Scott (Sian Webber) to help him because there was a possibility that he could get six years in prison in America. After being caught, a lawyer told the family: 'Credit card fraud in America. He's got a bail hearing tomorrow. The evidence is stacked pretty strong against him.' Little does Ben know that his husband has cheated on him after sleeping with Johnny, who is also in attendance at the funeral. The pair first hooked up a few months ago - and instantly felt bad about what they had done. Ben and Stuart's return was teased at the start of August. EastEnders said: 'Whilst both characters are only back for a short stint as Ben is on day release from prison in America, and Stuart has a life away from the Square with wife Raine. 'You'd think that all things would be smooth sailing, but this is Walford, and a lot can happen in a short amount of time.' EastEnders airs on BBC One and is available to stream on iPlayer.

EastEnders' Joel actor comes from famous acting family including mum and aunt

EastEnders newcomer Max Murray has only been on Albert Square for a short time, but his character Joel Marshall has been causing nothing but trouble. Since his arrival in Walford, viewers have discovered that Joel's behaviour in Australia was what caused the family's money troubles, leading them to move back to the UK. It transpired that Joel had taken a picture up one of his class mates' skirts, before sharing the photo online. Joel's dad Ross Marshall (Alex Walkinshaw) paid the family off, but they demanded that Joel stay away from Sydney. Unfortunately, the move to Albert Square hasn't changed Joel's vile behaviour, and he was recently caught filming himself sleeping with Avani Nandra-Hart (Aaliyah James). Horrified that Joel had slept with his daughter, Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara) lashed out at him, and that was without any knowledge of the secret recording. The character often expresses proof that he's been influenced by 'incel culture'. An incel is a member of an online community of young men. They consider themselves unable to attract woman sexually and have views that are often hostile towards women, and men who are sexually active. Joel has also been seen watching videos from a misogynistic influencer online. The last time Ross discovered Joel was continuing to view them, he threw his laptop in the sink and poured water over it. As he branded him a 'revolting, arrogant, disgusting little pervert', Joel pleaded for forgiveness. In real life, Max isn't the only member of his family to appear in the BBC soap, with the youngster following in the footsteps of his famous mum. Max is the son of actress and singer Gina Murray, who has had an extensive career on stage and screen. Gina appeared in an episode of EastEnders in 2014, where she played a woman called Helen. Helen was a specialist who arrived to help Carol Jackson find a wig after losing her hair during her battle with cancer. As well as EastEnders, Gina has also appeared on The Bill and Doctors, and more recently starred as Lesley Stobbart in The Hunt for Raoul Moat. She has also voiced characters in numerous video games, including RoboCop: Rogue City and Baldur's Gate 3. On stage, Gina has starred in musicals such as Hairspray, Mamma Mia andChicago, among others. In 2010, she formed a girl group alongside her fellow West End star sister Mazz Murray. Musical theatre legends Anna-Jane Casey and Emma Kershaw complete the line-up. More Trending The band, called Woman, recorded a single alongside Queen guitarist Brian May. Earlier this month, Mazz expressed her interest in joining BBC One's EastEnders in a quest to try something away from live audiences. She said in a chat with Hello! Magazine: 'I would love to do TV drama. I want to do EastEnders. I want to be challenged and try things that are different and new.' View More » This article was first published on May 14, 2025.
