Until Dawn movie's one returning character explained and the key changes from PlayStation game

A new horror flick based on a popular video game is set to hit the cinemas, albeit with some significant alterations.
Until Dawn, inspired by the PlayStation exclusive title of the same name, will be gracing the big screen from April 25. The original game drew its inspiration from teenage slasher series, adding its unique spin for an immersive gaming experience.
This film is the latest offering from PlayStation Productions, following in the footsteps of movies like Uncharted and Gran Turismo, as well as TV series such as Twisted Metal and HBO's The Last of Us. But who stars in the cinematic version of Until Dawn? What's the storyline, and how does it deviate from the original game? Here's all you need to know.

Who stars in Until Dawn?
The cast of Until Dawn boasts Broadway actress Ella Rubin as Clover, known for her roles in Netflix's The Chair, the Gossip Girl reboot, and Oscar-winning film Anora, reports
the Mirror US
.
Michael Cimino plays Max, having previously appeared in How I Met Your Father. Odessa A'zion portrays Nina, guest-starred on the US remake of sitcom Ghosts, and will also feature in the upcoming release Marty Supreme.
Ji-young Yoo takes up the role of Megan, who starred in the Nicole Kidman miniseries Expats for Amazon Prime. Belmont Cameli plays Abel, known for his role in the Saved by the Bell revival. Lastly, Australian actress Maia Mitchell plays Melanie, recently seen in the series The Artful Dodger.
What's the story of Until Dawn?
Per the film's synopsis, a year after her sister Melanie mysteriously vanished, Clover and her pals venture into the secluded valley where she disappeared, seeking answers.
They experience horrific murders, only to awaken and find themselves back at the start. Stuck in a relentless time loop, they're compelled to relive the nightmare repeatedly. Each iteration brings a different and even more horrifying killer. Their sole escape is to survive until dawn.
How does Until Dawn differ from the original game?
Fundamentally, aside from the title and the narrative following a group of teenagers, nearly everything else has been altered from the original game. Until Dawn first launched on PlayStation 4 in 2015. It was then revamped for the latest hardware and released on PS5 last year.
The game boasted its own impressive cast, including Rami Malek, Hayden Panettiere, and Superstore's Nichole Sakura. Similarly, the story commences one year after a mysterious disappearance.
However, in the game, it's twin sisters who disappear without a trace. They're chased off a cliff by an armed stranger, but their bodies are never discovered.
The film does also follow a group of teen friends
(Image: Sony)
A year later, the girls' brother invites the group of friends back to the cabin near where the incident occurred. They are eventually hunted by a masked figure and then by bizarre creatures known as wendigos.
The game endings alters ever so slightly based on the number of group members who survive. The remake includes two post-credits scenes, one of which seems to hint at a potential sequel. While the main goal is still to keep as many characters alive until dawn for rescue, there's no time loop mechanic.
Are any characters from the Until Dawn game returning for the film?
Despite significant changes to the story for the movie version, one character will be back. Peter Stormare is confirmed to reprise his role as Dr. Hill in the film.
Stormare has appeared in Fargo, John Wick Chapter Two, and Constantine.
In the game, Dr. Hill was the psychiatrist of the missing twins' brother and featured in hallucination scenes. How his character will be incorporated into the movie version of Until Dawn remains unknown.
Until Dawn is in cinemas from April 25

And I think that's refreshing, because usually we move around the world hiding who we are. That's the main lesson I've gotten from him: there's no reason for me to hide who I am, right? And I think people are seeing that." Lux Pascal, seen her with her sibling in January 2024, came out as trans in 2021 Revealing how she is coping during such an uncertain time for the trans community, Lux told THR: "Maybe it's not a good idea, but I'm focusing in my work. I'm doing stuff, and I want to keep my focus in that, and hopefully the storm will cease. "But I'm grateful, and I'm extremely privileged, and I think that continuing that route will help other people think with more ease. It is a difficult time, and I wish it wasn't as difficult. "I mean, we just went through a pandemic. Can we all just chill for a while and show empathy towards one another? I don't know, maybe I'm too much of a romantic,' she added. Pedro showed his support for the trans community when he wore a 'Protect the dolls' T-shirt to a movie screening on April 22 (Image: WireImage) Her comments come after Pedro stepped out wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the words "Protect the dolls" when he attended a screening of the movie Thunderbolts* in London on April 22. It's well known that the slogan is in support of trans women, with sales of this T-shirt going to the organization Trans Lifeline, which provides emotional support and financial assistance to trans people in the United States. Pedro also showed his unwavering support to the trans community when he slammed Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling as "disgusting" after she praised a UK Supreme Court ruling that stated the term "woman" in the 2010 Equality Act refers only to biological females. The author reportedly helped fund For Women Scotland, the group that brought the case to court. Leaving a comment on a post shared by activist Tariq Ra'ouf, Pascal wrote: "Awful disgusting S--T is exactly right. Heinous LOSER behavior."

All you need to know as The Last of Us season two introduces WLF and mysterious group

*Warning - this article contains minor spoilers for The Last of Us season two, episode three* The most recent episode of The Last of Us has introduced audiences to significant new factions within the universe of the show. After one of the series' most dramatic episodes, viewers were given a slow reveal of what might be coming next and who the key players might be. Ellie finally learns which group Abby has joined after leaving the Fireflies. More crucially, it provides clues about her probable location, as well as that of her friends. However, Ellie and Dina also encounter another faction during their journey in a horrifying scene, reports the Mirror . So, who are the WLF in The Last of Us? Who are the robed individuals that Ellie and Dina stumble upon, and who is The Prophet they mention? What part do they play in the narrative? Here's everything you need to know. Abby and other Fireflies join the WLF (Image: HBO) What is the WLF? In essence, the WLF can be viewed as a counterpart to the Fireflies, albeit with a different geographical origin. However, there are some notable differences in their methods, objectives, and operations. While the Fireflies appear to have originated on the East coast in Boston , the WLF, as indicated by their name, were established on the West. Their name stands for Washington Liberation Front, and they refer to themselves as Wolves, adopting the animal as their emblem. The group was established in Seattle, Washington by Emma and Jason Patterson, a couple who grew weary of living under government control, with food shortages being a significant problem. However, when we encounter them in the game, their leader is a man named Isaac, who was chosen to lead after the Pattersons' demise. Similar to the Fireflies, they are a rebel faction that rose up against the fictional government entity FEDRA, which assumed control of quarantine zones across major cities in The Last of Us' world following outbreak day. However, while the Fireflies aim to restore the democracy of the United States and engage in guerrilla warfare, the WLF is a militant paramilitary organisation that seeks to seize control through force, often choosing open and direct conflict. While the Fireflies share a message of hope among themselves, "look for the light", the WLF aligns more with viewing themselves as warriors. Their motto is: May your survival be long. May your death be swift. Following the fall of the Fireflies as seen in season one's finale, many of the surviving members, including Abby and her friends, travel to Seattle to join the WLF. As shown in the final scene of episode three, they are surprisingly large in number. In the game, they use a massive football stadium as their home base. Who are the Prophet and the Seraphites? Towards the end of the episode, we encounter a group of individuals dressed in brown robes with an unusual symbol on their backs. They communicate with each other over distances by whistling. Observant viewers will also notice the scars on their faces. The Seraphites, a group at war with the WLF over territorial control in Seattle and surrounding Washington state, have ideologies that directly clash with each other. Founded in Seattle by a woman known only as The Prophet, she preached that the Cordyceps infection was a divine punishment for humanity's sins, offering a chance for redemption. Her teachings inspired others to join her in living off the land. However, she was eventually captured by the WLF, befriended her guards, but was deemed too dangerous by the WLF leader and executed. Ellie is on a journey to track down the WLF (Image: HBO) The Prophet is unseen in the original game, except for painted images on walls and altars. A character mentions it's been a decade since her death in the latest episode, suggesting her symbolic reference will continue in the series. The WLF refers to the Seraphites as Scars, a nod to their self-inflicted wounds. Believing themselves to be imperfect beings, they scar themselves to reflect this imperfection. They shun technology from the "old world", although exceptions are made for their soldiers battling the WLF. While Ellie and Dina are taken aback by the sight of a large group of dead Seraphites in the episode, their introduction in the original game is far more horrific. Ellie stumbles upon a small group of members on her own. They have captured a WLF soldier who they hang and gut in a gruesome scene not yet depicted in the show. The Last of Us continues on HBO and streaming on MAX.

From controller to screen: 5 TV shows adapted from video games to watch

The Last of Us Above The trailer for season two of 'The Last of Us' A true-to-source reimagination of the two games, The Last of Us accurately follows the storyline from start to finish—albeit with a few creative liberties. The chemistry between lead actors Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey during their whimsical moments and serious, life-threatening experience make for a great watch that affirms and immerses previous players of the games while introducing those who came in blind with a heartfelt (and heartracing) story. As the show's second season runs with new episodes weekly, it's exciting to see how they approach some of the pivotal points in Ellie's quest for revenge. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Above The official trailer for 'Cyberpunk: Edgerunners' From the animation studio that brought fan favourite anime such as Kill La Kill and Star Wars: Visions , Cyberpunk: Edgerunners takes viewers to Night City—a dystopia plagued by crime, corruption, and cybernetic addiction. The show takes place around a year before the events of the mainline video game, Cyberpunk 2077, and follows David Martinez as he tries to survive as a mercenary. See also: How 'Black Mirror' Season 7 questions your reality, then breaks your heart The Cuphead Show! Above The trailer for 'The Cuphead Show!' A slapstick comedy harbouring a 1930s art style, The Cuphead Show! follows the misadventures of two brothers, Cuphead and Mugman. Throughout the series, fans of the game will be able to spot multiple villains from the source material, making for fun easter egg hunts and moments of hilarity as more context is given to each character. While the game uses traditional hand-drawn cel animation, the TV series, unfortunately, does not due to streaming deadlines. However, the animation quality is still one of the best in the genre, making for a wacky experience that stays true to the plot's atmosphere. Devil May Cry Above The trailer for 'Devil May Cry' (2025) anime Animated by South Korean studio Studio Mir, which brought the likes of The Legend of Korra and The Boondocks to television, the 2025 Devil May Cry anime is an adaptation of the mainline games. The show follows legendary demon hunter-for-hire, Dante, as he fights a powerful demon invading Earth. With over-the-top action sequences worthy of the character, it's a fun watch if you want to see good animation quality. However, longtime fans may notice several inconsistencies with the story—oftentimes breaking established events in favour of a new narrative.
