CPM should shut down offices and go to China, says Tripura BJP MP Biplab Kumar Deb
The party's Politburo had claimed that appeals for peace from Maoists had been ignored and that the central government as well as BJP-led the state government had chosen to ignore the possibility of dialogues with the rebels.
'The CPM is a banned organisation. Naxals are a banned organisation. Speaking of the banned organisation, the CPM has no place in democracy. If they have shame, they should close their party offices and go to China. They don't have a place in Tripura,' Deb told reporters on the sidelines of a visit to a flood relief camp at Durga Chowmuhani in Agartala.
On May 23, Biplab Kumar Deb termed the CPM 'anti-national' for criticising the Centre over the killing of the Maoists. His comments came even though CPM Politburo member and state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury clarified that his party wasn't opposed to any form of military offensive against Maoists or any other radical elements. Rather, Chaudhury said, the party had said the central government had ignored offers of surrender the slain Maoists had allegedly made.
'The CPM or any other patriotic political party or organisation in the country is obviously not opposed to military offensives against terrorists. But while the government is holding peace talks in Nagaland, the central government's move to reject offers of surrender from Maoists and rejecting their plea to return to normal life is not the way things are done…..' Chaudhury said soon after the BJP criticised the Politburo statement.
Chaudhury also claimed that while the BJP high command, central government or the Chhattisgarh government didn't criticise the CPM Politburo's statement, some leaders of the saffron party in Tripura were trying to confuse people.
During his visit to flood relief camps at Agartala, Biplab Deb continued his tirade against the CPM while distributing food packets. 'Waterlogging in the houses of most people staying in the shelters has reduced. Now they will need to clean their houses in a few days and we have provided food packets to every family so that they have food after reaching home…,' the former chief minister said.
Tripura is witnessing heavy rain and thunderstorms that have forced 10,813 people to abandon waterlogged houses and shelter in government camps. As many as 219 houses were damaged in Gomati, Khowai, Sepahijala, South Tripura, and North Tripura districts. However, the assessment of damage is ongoing.

Nitish refuses wear skull cap at madrasa event in Patna
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday (August 21, 2025) reportedly refused to wear a skull cap that's typically worn by Muslims at the centenary celebration of the Bihar Madrasa Education Board, where Mr. Kumar was the chief guest. In a video that went viral on social media, Mr. Kumar can be seen holding the cap with both hands and placing it on the head of his Cabinet colleague and Minority Welfare Minister Mohammad Zama Khan. 'Nitish's politics takes a new hue – rejecting the cap on stage, but accepting Sanghi coordination behind the scenes. The real face of Chacha's cunning revealed,' the Bihar Youth Congress posted on social media platform X, along with the video. When he was not part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), Mr. Kumar was known to indirectly critique Prime Minister Narendra Modi, before the latter became PM, that the leaders of India must wear 'topi (cap) and tilak' (symbols of the Muslim and Hindu communities, respectively). Mr. Kumar was previously seen wearing the topi at iftar parties at his official residence, and other functions of the Muslim community. Since he formed the government with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), leaving the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Congress in 2022, several Muslims leaders have expressed their disenchantment with Mr. Kumar. When the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) supported the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which is now an Act, several Muslim leaders of the party resigned in protest. RJD MLC Qari Muhammad Shohaib, RJD spokesperson Ejaz Ahmed, and former MLA Mujahid Alam jointly addressed a press conference at the party office, alleging that Mr. Kumar was neither secular before nor would he remain secular because he was 'busy pleasing the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS)'. Mr. Kumar listed the developmental work carried out for Muslims and madrasas at the event. Attacking the previous RJD-Congress alliance government in the State, Mr. Kumar said that before 2005, no work had been done for the people of the Muslim community. 'After the formation of the new government, a lot of work has been done for the Muslim community. Earlier, there used to be Hindu-Muslim fights, so fencing of graveyards was started from 2006 itself. Fencing of graveyards has been done on a large scale. Now, there is no fight,' the Bihar CM said. 'Earlier, the condition of madrasas was very bad and madrasa teachers received little money. From 2006, madrasas were registered and given government recognition. Madrasa teachers started receiving salaries equal to government teachers, and equal salaries are being given continuously since then,' Mr. Kumar said.

Major Russian attack on western Ukraine hits American factory during US-led push for peace
KYIV: Russia launched a rare drone and missile attack on western Ukraine overnight, officials said Thursday, striking targets including an American-owned electronics plant and injecting further uncertainty into the US-led efforts to end the three-year-old war. The aerial assault on a part of Ukraine that has largely avoided such focused attacks was one of Russia's biggest this year and came amid Moscow's objections to key aspects of proposals that could end the fighting following Russia's February 2022 invasion of its neighbor. US President Donald Trump discussed the war with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska last week before hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders at the White House on Monday. Trump last month questioned Putin's commitment to ending the war, saying the Russian leader 'talks nice and then he bombs everybody.' And in a social media post on Thursday, Trump criticized his predecessor, Joe Biden, for not providing Ukraine with more weaponry it needs to 'fight back.' 'It is very hard, if not impossible, to win a war without attacking an invaders country,' Trump said. 'It's like a great team in sports that has a fantastic defense, but is not allowed to play offensive. There is no chance of winning! It is like that with Ukraine and Russia.' The White House didn't immediately respond to a request for comment on whether Trump is weighing any changes to the types of weapons the US will provide to Kyiv. Russia has fired nearly 1,000 long-range drones and missiles at Ukraine since Monday's White House talks, according to Ukrainian tallies. European countries are discussing how they can deploy military assets to deter any postwar Russian assault on Ukraine. But the Kremlin won't accept the deployment of any troops from NATO countries, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Wednesday that making security arrangements for Ukraine without Moscow's involvement was pointless. Putin is ready to meet with Zelenskyy to discuss peace terms, Lavrov said Thursday, but only after key issues have been worked out by senior officials in what could be a protracted negotiating process because the two sides remain far apart. Ukrainian and European leaders have accused Putin of stalling in the peace efforts in the hopes that his bigger army, which has been making slow advances, can capture more Ukrainian land.
