Chinese hybrids heading to SA: Can these 10 new contenders steal some of Toyota's thunder?

The new Chery Tiggo 9 is one of numerous new Chinese hybrid vehicles destined for South Africa. Image: Supplied Very few South Africans are ready to take the plunge with a fully electric vehicle, but the latest statistics show that sales of hybrid vehicles are booming. According to Naamsa, sales of fully electric vehicles sank to just 276 units in the first quarter of 2025, down 16% from the same period in 2024, while sales of traditional hybrid vehicles rose by 14.8%, from 2587 units to 2970. Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sales grew by 71%, albeit off a very small base from 141 to 241 sales. But will 2025 be the year that PHEVs rise to prominence? Featuring larger batteries than conventional hybrids, these vehicles claim to offer the best of both worlds, typically offering fully electric coverage of between 50km and 100km, depending on the vehicle. And there are plenty of new entrants on the way to South Africa, as we'll get to shortly. But PHEVs tend to be on the pricey side, with BYD's recently introduced Sealion 6 currently being the least expensive option at R639,900. Toyota's Corolla Cross, a conventional hybrid, dominates the new energy vehicle market by a wide margin, and that is largely due to its combination of affordability and practicality, with prices starting at R494,400. Toyota also sells a Rav4 hybrid, and numerous Lexus models. The Corolla Cross is Mzansi's most affordable hybrid vehicle at present, but that could change in the not-too-distant future, with a number of compact Chinese offerings heading our way. MG3 and ZS Hybrids With its sporty looks and compact dimensions, the MG3 hatchback will be a refreshing addition to the local market, and our sources indicate that it will be offered with hybrid power. New MG3 Image: Supplied The newcomer promises feisty performance, with its combination of a 1.5-litre petrol engine and electric motor offering a total output of 155kW, while combined fuel consumption is a mere 4.3 litres per 100km . Also pencilled in for South Africa is a hybrid version of the popular HS midsize SUV. Combining a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor, customers can look forward to outputs of 165kW and 340Nm, as well as combined consumption of 5.5 l/100km. While these two MG hybrids are believed to be 'on the books' for South Africa, exact launch timing as well as pricing and local specifications have yet to be confirmed. Chery Tiggo Cross HEV Joining the petrol-powered Chery Tiggo Cross that was launched in South Africa in late 2024, the hybrid version is set to reach our shores in July. Chery Tiggo Cross Image: Supplied Specifics have yet to be confirmed, but it is believed the new HEV model is powered by a normally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine that pairs with two electric motors. Claimed fuel consumption amounts to 5.4 l/100km. Although it will command a premium over its ICE sibling, which is priced from R399,900 to R449,900, the Tiggo Cross HEV could still emerge as one of South Africa's most affordable hybrid vehicles. RISE OF THE PLUG-IN HYBRID Jaecoo J7 SHS You won't have to wait long to get your hands on the new Jaecoo J7 SHS plug-in hybrid SUV, which is set to officially launch later this week. Jaecoo J7 SHS. Image: Supplied According to the new PHEV model will be priced at R689,900, making it marginally more expensive than its BYD rival. But the stats are certainly impressive, with a turbocharged 1.5-litre engine pairing up with a powerful hybrid system to deliver combined outputs of 255kW and 525Nm. Thanks to its 18.3 kWh LFP battery, with DC charging capabilities, the J7 SHS can manage a claimed range of up to 90km between charges. Haval H6 GT PHEV Certainly one of the most electrifying hybrids to reach local shores this year, Haval's H6 GT PHEV is set to launch imminently. Haval H6 GT PHEV. Image: Supplied A true performance SUV, the new plug-in model boasts combined outputs of 321kW and 762Nm, allowing for a 4.9 second 0-100km/h sprint, while the carmaker claims a pure electric range of up to 180km. Omoda C9 PHEV The luxurious Omoda C9 will be joined by a supremely powerful plug-in hybrid variant in 2025, pairing the familiar 1.5-litre turbopetrol engine with four electric motors for combined outputs of 440kW and 915Nm. Omoda C9 PHEV. Image: Supplied Scheduled for launch in July, the new C9's is also said to be capable of covering up to 150km on electric power alone, thanks to a 34.5 kWh battery with DC fast charging capability. Locally the C9 PHEV will be available exclusively with the Explore specification level, which means 20-inch wheels, Nappa leather interior, with seat heating for front and rear occupants, and a panoramic sunroof. Chery Tiggo 7, Tiggo 8 and Tiggo 9 PHEVs Chery will welcome a stylish new flagship SUV to its fold around September. Meet the new Tiggo 9. Featuring a 1.5T petrol engine and three electric motors, the combined output is an impressive 230kW, while an all-electric range of up to 100km is said to be possible. The Chery Tiggo 9 PHEV Image: Supplied For the cabin, designers aimed to create a 'warm and tech savvy' space. Highlights include a 15.6-inch HD screen and integrated multifunctional console. Specially crafted 3D stitched seats, meanwhile, add an upmarket touch. While the Tiggo 9 represents the zenith of the local Chery line-up, the Chinese brand will also be introducing a pair of more affordable plug-in hybrids, with the Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 PHEVs due in July and August, respectively. More details on these models will be released in due course. GAC M8 PHEV GAC Motor, known for its sporty Emzoom and Emkoo crossover models, will be introducing something even more audacious in 2025. Corolla Cross hybrid SA's favourite new energy car for good reason

Crossover SUV's fuel economy, ease of use and level of comfort are hard to beat. Not that long ago, we were made to believe by many manufacturers that electric vehicles (EVs) will soon be the be-all and end-all. Staying true to its traditional measured approach, Toyota refused to put all its eggs into one basket. The Japanese manufacturer believed different markets will require different solutions. Apart from EVs, alternative fuels, fuel cell technology and a variety of hybrid powertrains were kept in the mix. As the world started backtracking on its ambitious plans of an immediate all-electric future, Toyota's approach turned out to be quite visionary. Especially in the hybrid department, which in theory is the perfect automotive evolution from internal combustion engines. And it's something they have extensive knowledge of since the pioneering days of the Prius and the Lexus brand's commitment to it. Enter Toyota Corolla Cross What really put Toyota's hybrid technology on the map is the Toyota Corolla Cross. It would be unfair to call it the spiritual successor to the Corolla as the sedan is still alive and kicking, so let's just say it has taken the baton as Toyota's go-to family car. The carmaker expected it to sell well at its introduction in 2021 and its lofty sales numbers was therefore no surprise. What did come as a bit of a surprise to them was the demand for the hybrid powertrain compared to the 1.8-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine derivatives. The Prospecton-built Toyota Corolla Cross hybrid or HEV quickly became South Africa's best-selling new energy vehicle, a distinction it still holds on to by a country mile. Something that is unlikely to change any time soon as most local new energy offerings are plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and EVs with much loftier price tags that the Cross HEV's entry point of just under R500k. The Corolla Cross Xr HEV rides on 18-inch alloys. Picture: Michel Bega After undergoing its first model update in January, The Citizen Motoring spent the last three months and over 6 000km in the Corolla Cross HEV in Xr guise. At R545 200, the Xr trim level comes at a R51 000 premium over the Xs HEV. A hit all-round The only way we can start out overall report card on the Cross is to say that everyone that drove it, absolutely loved it. And it was driven by quite a motley crew of people which included tamed racing drivers, overly cautious men and finicky women. Giving the Corolla Cross a huge thumbs-up is probably the only thing all these people will ever agree on. Topping the list of what everyone enjoyed most about the car are ease of operation, excellent fuel economy and the comfort and space it has to offer. The beauty of an HEV is that it is what we call a self-charging hybrid. It draws power from both a 1.8-litre petrol engine and electric motor and battery which produces a total of 90kW of power and 143Nm of torque. The power sources work seamlessly together – or on their own – to not require any input from the driver. At lower speeds it runs just on electricity powering the electric motor, when the engine kicks in it works together with the electric side and then the engine can also generate power back into the battery or run the car all on its own. ALSO READ: PODCAST: Can updates keep Toyota Corolla Cross Chinese-proof? On-board education At first the various configuration all seem a bit confusing, but a little graphic in the digital instrument cluster indicating which power goes where educates you very quickly. During start-up and pulling away there is hardly any sound as the Corolla Cross runs purely on electricity. Then you hear the engine kick in and see the two power sources sending the twist to the wheels. When you need brisk acceleration or start pushing it beyond the national limit, the internal combustion engine roars with a distinctive continuously variable transmission (CVT) sound. The typical CVT-droning is in fact the only criticism that came up during its time with us. From mostly the tamed racing drivers. The Corolla Cross Xr features a 10.1-inch infotainment system and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Picture: Michel Bega In terms of fuel consumption, we averaged an excellent 5.5 litres per 100km for the duration of the Corolla Cross' stay with us. That includes lots of city traffic and two open road trips to Kroonstad and Durban. When you start figuring out the hybrid system and take it easier on the accelerator to use more pure electric power, inner city trips done at less than 4L/100km is not uncommon. ALSO READ: Toyota Corolla Cross Mzansi's most popular pre-owned hybrid Toyota Corolla Cross' crown safe The Toyota Corolla Cross will face its biggest test soon when Chery introduces the Tiggo Cross HEV locally. There is talk that it will undercut the Corolla Cross' sticker by an attractive sum which will make it hard to ignore. But it is less likely to undercut the Corolla Cross' fuel consumption, taking into consideration Chinese carmakers' struggle in this department. Until rivals top the Toyota Corolla Cross in all departments, its crown as Mzansi's favourite new energy vehicle will rest easy on its head.

Wait over: Say hello to the all-new generation Toyota RAV4

The first new RAV4 in seven years sees the conventional petrol engine bow-out completely, and the GR Sport become a global plug-in hybrid-only variant. Teased selectively over the last two weeks, Toyota, in the early hours of Wednesday morning (21 May), finally debuted the all-new RAV4 in both North America and Japan as one of its most important new models to date. The replacement for the current fifth generation that went on-sale back in 2018, the sixth generation of Toyota's Recreational Actively Vehicle with 4-Wheel-Drive debuts as a near ground new product more compact in appearance than its predecessor, and solely motivated by electrified powertrains consisting of hybrid and plug-in hybrid options. Styled to resemble not only the current Camry, but also certain Lexus models as well as its junior sibling, the C-HR, the RAV4 again rides on the TNGA-K platform, but with revised frame mounts and suspensions joints, plus improved structural rigidity to the body itself. Dimensionally, and despite appearing smaller than its predecessor, the RAV4 retains the same measurements as before, but with a slight clearance of 13 mm when specified with the optional off-road tyres. Mounted on alloy wheels ranging from 17 to 20-inches, boot space, with the rear seats up, increases from 733-litres to 749-litres, while for only second time in the RAV4's 31-year history, a GR Sport once again tops the range, this time not only exclusive to Europe or Japan as the case has been. Equally as dramatic as its exterior redesign, the RAV4's interior, as hinted by previous teaser images, adopts a design derived not only from the Camry, but also the all-electric bZ4X and in some areas, the Tacoma bakkie. Based around what Toyota calls an island architecture concept, the integrated infotainment system makes way for a new freestanding 10.5-inch or optional 12.9-inch display, both with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the instrument cluster measures 12.3-inches and comes in a box-type binnacle whose top surface has been lowered by 40 mm. Besides the bZ4X-style steering wheel with physical buttons, the centre console also renounces touch-sensitive buttons by also sporting two recesses, one for the wireless smartphone charger, a further storage box that doubles-up as an armrest, and type-C USB ports. Gone, however, is the conventional gear lever that makes for a toggle switch selector as part of the new shift-by-wire setup, as well as the normal climate control, whose interface now resides within the pair of infotainment systems. In the United States, where the RAV4 upstaged the Ford F-150 to become the country's best-selling new model last year with sales of 475 193 versus 460 915 units, specification consists of a new Head-Up Display, imitation leather upholstery and heated front seats. Depending on the grade, which in the States consists of LE, SE, XLE, XSE, Limited, Woodland and GR Sport, the RAV4 will come standard with a six-speaker sound system, or on higher-end versions, a nine-speaker JBL audio. Toyota's latest Safety Sense 4.0 array of safety and driver assistance system also comes standard, however, no exact details about the various systems was divulged. As mentioned, the biggest change is the choice of the engines where are 31 years, the RAV4 no longer comes with the optional of an electrically unassisted internal combustion engine. Instead, so-called Core (LE, XLE and Limited) and Sport models (SE, XSE and GR Sport) in the US are motivated by the familiar 2.5-litre normally aspirated petrol engine combined with a single electric motor and battery pack. Official Toyota North America power figures suggest 226 horsepower or 166 kW, which increases to 236 horsepower or 174 kW with the addition of a second electric motor on the E-Four all-wheel-drive derivatives. For reference, the current RAV4 E-Four's setup develops 163 kW in South Africa. Whereas the latter powertrain comes standard on the Woodland that Toyota classifies under the Rugged banner, the option involves the plug-in hybrid configuration that becomes the sole choice for the GR Sport. Using the same 2.5-litre engine, the electric hardware consists of the pair of electric motors being powered by a new 22.7-kWh battery pack. In total, the combined output amounts to 320 horsepower or 235 kW, which represents an uptake of eight kilowatts over the previous plug-in hybrid. The claimed all-electric range is a projected 80 km with 30 a minute wait set to apply from 10-80%. Reportedly, the plug-in hybrid GR Sport will get from 0-100 km/h in 5.8 seconds. Confirmed for arrival in the States later this year priced from $35 000, Toyota South Africa Motors has so far not approved the RAV4 for the local market. However, expect sales to possibly only start next year as the firm's Australia division has confirmed its allocation only from early 2026. As a reminder, the now outgoing RAV4 range consists of six models priced from R712 700 for the base 2.0 GX-R, to R989 800 for the unbadged plug-in hybrid E-Four.
