China's premier says China and Indonesia will promote 'true multilateralism'

SHANGHAI/JAKARTA (Reuters): China's Premier Li Qiang said on Saturday that China and Indonesia will promote "true multilateralism" as he landed in Jakarta on a two-day visit to South-East Asia's largest economy.
China has intensified engagement with countries in the region since US President Donald Trump announced hefty import tariffs on its global trading partners earlier this year.
Some levies have since been delayed, while China and the US agreed this month to pause some of their tariffs. Jakarta, whose biggest trading partner is China, has offered the US a number of concessions in a bid to soften tariffs against Indonesia.
At a business leaders' event later on Saturday, at which Li was present, Indonesia President Prabowo Subianto said relations between Beijing and Jakarta were key for regional stability, adding that Indonesia views China as an important partner in developing industry and technology.
He also praised China's role in defending the interests of developing countries and its stand against "imperialism" and "colonialism."
Prabowo and Li will hold a meeting on Sunday to discuss how to strengthen Indonesia-China relations, Indonesian investment minister Rosan Roeslani said in a statement.
Following the visit to Jakarta, Li will travel to Malaysia to attend the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit, Xinhua reported.

Anwar said that feedback on Polish military equipment, including tanks and the WB Group's electronic systems, has so far been positive. "I certainly look forward to the proposal by both parties if we could continue and expand, particularly in the new areas of defence, because the Polish government has also disbursed and expanded additional sums of funds to support the industry,' said Anwar. Anwar also underscored Poland's expertise in green hydrogen and modern food technology, which could complement Malaysia's halal industry and sustainability goals. "I look forward to enhancing these bilateral relations and your new expertise in green hydrogen,' he said, adding a light-hearted remark about Poland's success in the cosmetics sector. The Prime Minister also welcomed the encouraging 19.5 per cent year-on-year growth in bilateral trade between 2023 and 2024, calling it a clear reflection of the deepening economic partnership between the two countries. "We have discussed at great length the expansion of exports, including palm oil, wood, rubber products and electrical and electronics (E&E) as well as collaboration in green hydrogen,' he added. Anwar said the two countries should continue showcasing their capacity to work together in these diverse fields, particularly in areas where both Malaysia and Poland have strategic advantages. Duda is on his first official visit to Malaysia, which comes at significant moment - coinciding with Malaysia's Asean Chairmanship and Poland's Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2025. Earlier, Duda was accorded an official welcome at the Perdana Putra Complex, followed by a bilateral meeting with Anwar and an official luncheon hosted by Anwar at the Seri Perdana Complex. According to Wisma Putra, Duda is also scheduled to visit the Second Regiment of the Royal Armoured Corps at the Sunggala Camp, Port Dickson and deliver a public lecture at the Asia-Europe Institute, Universiti Malaya, in Kuala Lumpur. Duda's visit underscores the robust and friendly relations between Malaysia and Poland, which are founded on mutual respect and close cooperation since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1971. In 2024, Poland ranked as Malaysia's 8th largest trading partner among European Union member states, with total bilateral trade rising by 19.5 per cent to RM5.66 billion compared to 2023. PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and Poland have expressed readiness to deepen cooperation between ASEAN and the European Union (EU), leveraging their respective chairmanships to drive a more strategic and long-term interregional partnership. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the ongoing alignment, with Malaysia chairing ASEAN this year and Poland assuming the EU Council presidency in the first half of 2025, has created a unique diplomatic opportunity to foster closer ASEAN-EU relations, particularly in trade. 'This visit by President Andrzej Duda is very special because he currently holds the presidency of the EU Council, while Malaysia is the Chair of ASEAN. Our discussions touched on both bilateral matters and broader ASEAN-EU issues,' Anwar told a joint press conference with the Polish leader here today. He noted that talks between ASEAN and the EU, particularly on the free trade agreement (FTA), have gained new momentum after years of slow progress. 'The negotiations had been protracted, perhaps due to differing priorities in the past. But over the last year and especially in recent months, we have seen an accelerated process. I am pleased that under the EU presidency, we are witnessing this fast-tracked approach,' he said. Drugs, cybercrime and human trafficking among key focus areas at AIPACODD 2025
KUANTAN: Drug issues, cybercrime, and human trafficking will be the three key areas covered at the 8th Meeting of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly Advisory Council on Dangerous Drugs (AIPACODD) 2025, to be held here. AIPA President and Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul said the meeting will gather ASEAN delegates to exchange views and expertise in tackling these transnational crimes. 'AIPACODD has two main objectives: to foster consensus among ASEAN nations in formulating common policies, and to generate fresh ideas, especially on cybercrime and human trafficking, where we need fresh ideas that require legal input and proposals from member countries,' he said. Johari was speaking at a press conference on the sidelines of the meeting, themed 'Uniting Parliaments for an Inclusive and Sustainable ASEAN in Addressing Contemporary Drug Challenges.' He added that the meeting's outcomes will be forwarded to the Parliamentary Select Committee for deliberation before any proposals are tabled in the Dewan Rakyat. 'We will also bring the outcomes of this meeting to the ASEAN Secretariat if they involve administrative matters that require its action, such as drug-related issues, for quicker response and implementation,' he said. The AIPACODD meeting began today and will continue tomorrow with deliberations and the adoption of the official resolution It will be followed by a closing ceremony and a speech of appreciation by the representative of the Philippines, which will host the next session. Tonight, a royal banquet will be held with the consent of the Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, symbolising royal support for inter-parliamentary diplomacy in building a safer and more sustainable ASEAN. In his opening remarks, Johari noted that a United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) report released on May 28 warned of emerging threats facing ASEAN youth from synthetic drug products engineered to evade detection. 'Thai authorities recently seized 1,555 'K pods' containing ketamine and etomidate in vaping products, while etomidate in e-liquids has been detected in multiple member countries, including Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia,' he said. 'These products, with their attractive packaging and perceived 'safer' delivery through vaping, are designed to target younger users who may be unaware of the risks,' he said. Johari stressed that AIPACODD must evolve to stay relevant, as criminal networks now operate with corporate-like efficiency across illicit sectors. This transformation must recognise that drug trafficking is deeply intertwined with wider criminal ecosystems, including human trafficking, wildlife smuggling, money laundering and cybercrime, he added.
