Residents demand more foot over bridges in Vijayawada

Vijayawada: In the absence of foot over bridges (FoBs), citizens crisscrossing roads at the busiest intersections risk their lives, which has become a common sight in the city. Concerned about their safety, residents continue to demand the govt promptly construct sufficient numbers of FoBs, a long-pending demand that remains unaddressed.While residents say there is a need for a FoB at nearly every traffic junction, Vijayawada city currently has just one operational FoB opposite the Old Eenadu office on MG Road, situated strategically between Benz Circle and NTR Circle Junctions, two key junctions in the city.
"The FoB opposite the Eenadu office serves little purpose as it is mostly used by political parties for displaying flex banners and publicity materials, while intermediate students use it during morning and evening hours. On the other hand, Benz Circle, which is just 200 metres away and where thousands of people jaywalk daily, putting their lives at risk, is bereft of a FoB despite demands from the public to construct one," secretary of taxpayers association in Vijayawada, MV Anjaneyulu, told TOI."Before anything else, Vijayawada, as a city, first requires better footpaths that allow pedestrians to safely walk on the roads. Secondly, the city immediately requires FoBs at crucial junctions such as Benz Circle, Ramavarappadu Ring, Chuttugunta, Besant Road, RTC bus stand area, and Police Control Room junction."While the city earlier had two FoBs, one at the Eenadu office and another at PWD Grounds, the FoB at PWD Grounds was demolished to facilitate the construction of Dr BR Ambedkar Statue at Ambedkar Smriti Vanam Park, developed at the grounds by the previous state govt.A senior Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) official told TOI: "The municipal corporation readied a proposal to construct FoBs at Benz Circle, PCR Junction, Chutti Nagar, and a subway at KR Market area. However, the proposals didn't materialise due to unknown reasons.""I travel daily from Balaji Nagar to Patamata, and I take share autos from Varadhi Junction to Benz Circle Junction to Patamata for commuting daily to my workplace and vice versa. During my commute, I have to cross national highway roads at Varadhi and Benz Circle, making pedestrian safety dubious," says Nagamani, a resident of Balaji Nagar.

Face-to-face programme flooded with requests for more Indiramma houses in Hyderabad
Hyderabad: Applications for Indiramma houses within the Greater Hyderabad limits flooded the face-to-face programme conducted by BC welfare and city in charge minister, Ponnam Prabhakar, at the Gandhi Bhavan on Wednesday. A majority of the people who came to the programme were from the state capital, with a few from neighbouring districts. The people urged Ponnam to sanction Indiramma houses and requested that he ask the chief minister to increase the quota of Indiramma houses for the poor in the city. The state govt sanctioned 3,500 Indiramma houses for each of the 119 assembly constituencies in the state in the first phase of the programme. The minister received over 100 petitions, in addition to grievances and requests submitted orally to him during the face-to-face programme, which was revived after a few months. The programme was stopped midway without any reasons given, but sources in Gandhi Bhavan said it was due to MLC elections and other factors. It has been revived now after TPCC president Mahesh Kumar Goud spoke to the chief minister and also AICC in charge Meenakshi Natarajan. The AICC in charge also participated briefly in the face-to-face session and interacted with the people about the problems they were facing in getting their grievances addressed by the officials. Applications for jobs, loans for self-employment schemes, resolutions to land encroachments and disputes, new ration cards, inclusion of names on existing cards, allocation of pending allotment of 2-BHK houses, inclusion of names in the free electricity scheme, and other welfare programmes were submitted to the minister. A delegation of the Telangana Udyama Karula Forum told TOI that they urged Ponnam Prabhakar to remind the TPCC president and the CM about the Congress election manifesto, which promised a house site and a monthly pension to those who fought for statehood. They urged Ponnam to speak to the CM and ensure that a committee is constituted to identify all such Udyama Karulu. "It is not only about the monthly honorarium and house site, but mainly about acknowledgement that we fought and achieved statehood. The govt should give us a memento or certificate, which we will display in our houses and offices as a mark of pride and self-respect that we were at the forefront of the statehood agitation," said forum leader Taduri Gagan Kumar.

Cabinet will discuss JAC demands, CM firm on resolving employees' issues: Bhatti
Hyderabad: Ahead of the cabinet meeting on Thursday, deputy chief minister Bhatti Vikramarka-led cabinet sub-committee held talks with govt employees' JAC leaders on Wednesday and assured them that the Congress govt considered their 57 demands as genuine. "Despite financial constraints, the CM is firm on resolving their issues. The cabinet sub-committee will submit a report to the govt with its recommendations, and the cabinet meeting on Thursday will decide which of the financial intensive and other demands will be accepted," Bhatti said. Sources told TOI that the cabinet meeting was likely to give preference to clearing a significant quantum of the pending Rs 10,000 bills of the employees and may announce release of one Dearness Allowance and time frame for another DA. The govt may also accept demand of new health cards, but a final decision on "cashless and capless treatment" would be taken after cabinet discussion. The govt may also revise the treatment slabs fixed nearly nine years ago. However, contrary to expectations, sources said the cabinet may not decide on enhancing the retirement age from the present 61 to 64 years following intelligence reports on severe backlash from students and youth. We are confident that tomorrow's cabinet meeting will find solutions to many of the demands of the JAC," he said while emphasising the need for their cooperation so that neither the public nor employees face difficulties. He said that it was due to financial issues resulting from the past decade's governance that bills and other demands of the employees piled up. "The Congress is continuing many welfare schemes of the previous government and is also implementing its own promises. Also, new schemes not announced in the manifesto have been launched. All this is being done without any additional tax on the citizens. The govt is committed to addressing employees' demands as part of this effort," Bhatti said. On their part, the JAC leaders said they would decide their future course of action based on the cabinet decision. The JAC has threatened to launch protest programmes in a phased manner, followed by a pen-down strike from June 9 onwards, if at least some of their important demands are not met. The JAC has demanded 51% fitment (PRC), release of at least three of the five pending DAs and Rs 10,000 crore employees bills, new health cards with cashless and capless treatment, revision of old rates of medical treatment and a number of non-financial issues such as general transfers. Besides these issues, the cabinet meeting on Thursday is also expected to discuss the approval of loans to unemployed youth under Rajiv Yuva Vikasam, implementation status of various development projects and those to be launched with central assistance, and national dam safety authority and vigilance reports.

Centre to fast-track green nods for all Indus river basin projects
NEW DELHI: The Centre will fast-track environmental clearances of all pending and proposed projects in the Indus River Basin in J&K to utilise the maximum amount of water from the river system in the wake of govt keeping the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance following the Pahalgam attack. "The ministry will ensure that all the green clearances/regulatory approvals for these strategic projects are granted expeditiously, while ensuring appropriate scientific rigour in the appraisal process," Union environment minister Bhupender Yadav told TOI. Besides getting green clearance for the proposed hydro-power projects, the Centre will require a similar nod for creating irrigation infrastructure and water storage capacity in the region. The hydro-electric projects which await different clearances include Uri stage-II (240 MW), Kirthai-II (930 MW) and Sawalkot (1856 MW). In addition to clean electricity generation, these projects will also be important for building water storage capacity due to accompanying reservoirs. Though the ministry had taken multiple measures, including setting up a single-window portal, to speed up the processes of green clearances in the past few years, the minister's remarks show govt's intent of prioritising projects of strategic importance.
