Independence Day Box Office: Coolie Trails Behind War 2 By Rs 7 Cr On Day 2, Saiyaara Reign Ends
Coolie vs War 2 Box Office Collection: In an epic box office showdown, Rajinikanth's Coolie and Hrithik Roshan's War 2 were released together on August 14. Despite stiff competition, both films had superb openings, leaving the makers hopeful that the Independence Day weekend would provide an extra surge to the films' collection. Amid this, the fate of Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda's Saiyaara looked grim. As the early estimates from the day time shows are finally out, how did the films fare this Independence Day?
After a record-breaking box office opening, Rajinikanth 's Coolie continues its rise. As per Sacnilk's early estimates, at the time of publishing this article, the film has minted Rs 25.94 Cr India net on its second day for all languages. This brings the film's total to Rs 90.94 Cr India net.
The film opened with impressive numbers and witnessed a Rs 65 crore opening in India. Coolie even surpassed the Rs 150 crore figure internationally on the day of its release. Rajinikanth's Coolie shattered box office records by becoming the first Tamil film ever to achieve such a massive international debut. The film has generated significant hype and is well on its way to joining the Rs 100 crore club in just two days.
On August 14, the film gave intense competition to War 2, which had opened to Rs 52.5 Cr. Despite mixed critical reviews, War 2 managed a strong Day 1 collection, proving the pull of its star cast and YRF branding. While the numbers were impressive, Coolie edged ahead on Day 1. However, after the morning and afternoon shows on August 15, Rajinikanth's film is trailing behind the Hrithik Roshan-Jr NTR starrer.
As per Sacnilk, War 2 has minted Rs 32.05 Cr India net on its second day for all languages. This brings the film's total to Rs 83.55 Cr. While War 2 seems to have overtaken Coolie on August 15, Rajinikanth's film still has a higher total collection at the domestic box office. However, a gap of Rs 7 crore isn't too hard for War 2 to cover up during its box office run.
It is important to note that these numbers from Sacnilk are only early estimates, posted at 5 pm on August 15. The real box office collection for the day will be revealed later in the evening. Makers of both films expected heavy footfall in theatres given that Independence Day is on a Friday, followed by Janmashtami on Saturday and a holiday on Sunday. Will the scales tip in favour of Rajinikanth's Coolie or will Hrithik Roshan win this box office war? News18 will keep you updated with the box office collections of both films.
Meanwhile, Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda's Saiyaara seems to have succumbed to competition. Although the film's numbers began to dwindle around its third week, the film witnessed its lowest opening on August 15. As per Sacnilk's early estimates, Saiyaara has minted Rs 0.20 Cr India net on its twenty-eighth day. The film's total India collection now stands at a whopping Rs 322.8 Cr. Saiyaara had a long, successful cinematic run, but Coolie and War 2 have dominated theatres now.
Coolie or War 2: Which Film To Watch?
Coolie Review
Can't seem to decide which film to watch first? News18 Showsha gave Coolie 4/5 stars. Our review read, 'Rajinikanth is back! The legendary actor proves why he has been the swag king in Lokesh Kanagaraj's Coolie. The film showcases the charismatic Rajini that we have missed on screen for a while now. Kanagaraj has managed to bring the swag back with Rajinikanth making a power-packed comeback."
'As much as the action and Rajinikanth's swag dominate the film, what impresses is the screenplay and story. The climax is packed not just with action, but the famous cameo appearance by Aamir Khan. The plot twists don't end there. Wait till you watch the tail-end scene to be taken back in time. Overall, Lokesh Kanagaraj has managed to bring a banger to the theatres that need to be enjoyed on the big screen with a hall filled with Rajini fans," our review also mentions.
War 2 Review
As for War 2, News18 Showsha gave the film 2.5/5 stars. Our review read, 'The template is so formulaic that War 2 emerges as a jaded, done-to-death, globetrotting actioner. An espionage thriller is supposed to have a hero, a good guy-turned-arch-nemesis who feels that he has been wronged by a compatriot and a beauty-with-brains kind of a female spy, with dollops of gravity-defying action and a sexy dance number. But where's the novelty? Where are the layers of storytelling? And most importantly, where's the thrill? Sadly, War 2 is all style and no ammo."
'The action is grand, as expected. The action team orchestrates set-pieces that span continents. There are breathless chases through narrow European lanes, close-combat duels dripping with intensity and aerial stunts that push the limits of plausibility. In the first half, there's a sequence that takes place inside a private chopper. It's stylised for sure but is also unintentionally funny," our review also stated.

Coolie Day 3 India Box Office Estimates: Rajinikanth crime-drama looks to do an excellent Rs 48 crore gross on 1st Saturday BUT...
Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, and starring Rajinikanth had yet another excellent day at the India box office, grossing Rs 47-48 crore. These are excellent numbers but the trend is slightly worrisome. The movie opened to collections of Rs 75.50 crore, added Rs 63.50 crore on day 2 (Independence Day holiday) and is likely putting up Rs 47.50 crore on day 3, taking the 3 day cume to Rs 186.50 crore. Going by how it is doing, the Sunday collections are going to drop down to around Rs 40 crore, giving the movie a weekend of a little over Rs 225 crore. The Day Wise India Gross Collections Of Coolie Are As Under Day India Gross Collections 1 Rs 75.50 crore 2 Rs 63.50 crore 3 Rs 47.50 crore Total Rs 186.50 crore Coolie's Rs 47.50 Crore Day 3 Is Excellent But Given How It Started, The Numbers Should Have Been Closer To Rs 60 Crore If the Saturday numbers of Coolie are seen, not taking into consideration the fact that it opened to the numbers it did, they are excellent and not many Tamil movies have really been able to manage it. The collections for the Tamil version of Coolie are on a steep fall. It is the Hindi and Telugu version collections that are sustaining to a degree. After Sunday, it is likely that the drops will be significant even for the Hindi and Telugu version. Regardless, the movie has already punched above its weight for these two versions. The underperformance in the home market will end up being the most talked thing about this Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial. If the trend is to be analysed, it will end up doing lower than what Ajith Kumar's Good Bad Ugly did in Tamil Nadu. Coolie Heads For A Rs 500 Crore Range Worldwide Finish Unless Something Surprising Happens Coolie heads for a near Rs 500 crore global finish, but even that is subject to how it holds. The global weekend of Coolie will be around Rs 375 crore and for it to add less than Rs 125 crore after that will not be seen well. All things said, Coolie will still be among the top 5 highest Kollywood grosser worldwide and that just proves how big Rajinikanth continues to be. He will have 3 films in the top 5 list and what's important to note is that it is with 3 different directors. Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more updates.
