3 Colts' Day 12 training camp takeaways: Positional battles taking shape?
Here are the three big takeaways following Day No. 12 of Indianapolis Colts' training camp. The Indianapolis Colts wrapped up practice No. 12 of training camp on Monday. Next up is a joint practice with the visiting Green Bay Packers. However, before we dive into that, let's take a look back at what happened on Monday with the three biggest takeaways. How did Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones perform? For both quarterbacks, it was an efficient passing day. Jake Arthur of Horseshoe Huddle would note in his camp takeaways article that Jones was 21-of-28 passing. Arthur added that Jones was more "decisive" with his decision-making on Monday and "tested things downfield" more often. Nate Atkins of the Indy Star would post that Jones' overall performance was "iffy." Richardson, meanwhile, was 18-for-23 passing. Arthur wrote that Richardson was spreading the ball around to all areas of the field, but he had some difficulties on third downs. Richardson capped off the practice with a touchdown drive during a two-minute period. Atkins called Richardson's performance "up and down," and included an interception, but he also noted that on the two-minute drive, he made "quick decisions," was "sharp," and had "well-placed footballs." Will Mallory continues to impress Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan would write in his camp takeaways that Mallory is having a "really nice camp." Arthur noted that Mallory had two receptions during the team period, one of which was a downfield throw from Richardson. Within this Colts' tight end room, Tyler Warren will be leading the way, but we will see plenty two tight end sets. While Warren brings a do-it-all skill set to the offense, in those more obvious passing situations, Mallroy could provide the offense with another receiving threat at the position. The thought has been that Mallory and Jelani Woods are competing for the final tight end spot on the depth chart, but Bowen doesn't see it as a competition at all--he has Mallory on the roster. Other positional battles are taking shape At kicker, special teams coordinator Brian Mason said that Spencer Shrader has a "leg up" on Maddux Trujillo. Danny Pinter was sidelined with an injury today, which has Bowne believing that Tanor Bortolini is starting to secure the starting center role. Atkins posted that Tyler Goodson is "making strides" while Khalil Herbert is out. He is perhaps taking control of the RB3 battle. While we wonder who will be starting at linebacker next to Zaire Franklin, Lou Anarumo mentioned that several players will help fill that role. One camp competition that is still up in the air is at the cornerback spot opposite of Charvarius Ward. The Colts continue to navigate several injuries at this position.
