Roles to Avoid or Approach with Caution
Outlook for Tech Employment
If you're looking to build a tech career in 2025, it's more important than ever to choose your path wisely as professionals face a sharply divided landscape. Some roles, especially those linked to AI, machine learning, and enterprise technology, are in high demand, offering strong salaries and growth opportunities. At the same time, many traditional and entry-level tech positions are declining, making it crucial for job seekers to understand which roles are worth pursuing and which to avoid.According to Indeed Hiring Lab, tech job postings were down 36% from early 2020 levels as of July 2025, reflecting both broader economic conditions and the evolving impact of artificial intelligence (AI).AI and machine learning roles remain the strongest growth areas. Positions such as machine learning engineers and AI/ML specialists have continued to see high demand, with postings above pre-pandemic levels. Business Insider reports that AI-focused positions, including 'AI/ML engineer,' have become increasingly common and often command some of the highest salaries in tech, with 2024 median pay for machine learning engineers around $260,000 annually.Enterprise technology roles also remain attractive. SAP consultants and leads have shown steady demand, reflecting the value businesses place on software that supports wide-ranging operations. Data science roles are similarly resilient, combining analytical skills with AI-driven business insights. Brendon Bernard, senior economist at Indeed, notes that these specialized positions are among the few tech jobs where demand has remained strong despite broader hiring freezes. In contrast, many traditional mid-tier and entry-level tech roles have experienced steep declines.According to Indeed research, software engineers remain the most common tech title but have dropped 49% from early-2020 levels. Mid-level developer positions, including Android, Java, iOS, .Net, and web developers, have been hit particularly hard, with postings down over 60%. Entry-level and junior roles are also scarce, and more positions now require five or more years of experience, making it difficult for early-career professionals to break into the field.Bernard highlights that most remaining opportunities now require five or more years of experience, making it challenging for early-career professionals to enter the field.Geography can influence opportunities. Indeed's data shows that tech hiring has held up better in cities where local non-tech hiring also remains strong. For those entering or switching within tech, focusing on AI-related skills, enterprise software expertise, and highly specialized roles is likely to offer the best prospects. Developing skills in areas less susceptible to automation can further improve long-term career stability.Despite the slowdown in postings, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that overall employment in computer and mathematics occupations remains elevated, up nearly 19% from 2019. However, the gap between employment levels and available postings suggests limited opportunities for new entrants. As Indeed and Business Insider research indicates, success in 2025 will depend on targeting roles with strong demand, competitive pay, and resilience to automation, while avoiding positions that are declining or restricted to highly experienced professionals.

Meta Freezes AI Hiring After Blockbuster Spending Spree
Meta Platforms has frozen hiring in its artificial-intelligence division after spending months scooping up 50-plus AI researchers and engineers, according to people familiar with the matter. The hiring freeze, which went into effect last week and coincides with a broader restructuring of the group, also prohibits current employees from moving across teams inside the division. The duration of the freeze wasn't communicated internally. There might be exceptions to the block on external hires, but they would need permission from Meta's chief AI officer, Alexandr Wang, the people said. A Meta spokesperson confirmed the freeze, characterizing it as 'basic organizational planning: creating a solid structure for our new superintelligence efforts after bringing people on board and undertaking yearly budgeting and planning exercises.' While all of the top AI companies have hired aggressively this year, Meta has most often pushed the pace of the talent war, offering prized researchers pay packages worth nine figures and using so-called reverse acquihires to strip startups of key leaders. Analysts have voiced concerns about the scale of leading tech firms' investments, with some singling out Meta's fast-rising stock-based compensation costs as a potential threat to shareholder returns. The recent restructuring inside Meta divides its AI efforts into four teams: one working on superintelligence, called TBD Lab, that houses many of the new hires; a second working on AI products; a third working on infrastructure; and a fourth dedicated to projects with a longer time horizon and more exploration, the people said. The latter, called Fundamental AI Research, remains largely untouched in the reorganization. The four groups sit within the umbrella of Meta Superintelligence Labs, a name that reflects Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg's recent emphasis on building computer systems that can outperform the smartest humans on cognitive tasks. The Information previously reported some details of Meta's AI reorganization. Previously, Meta had a team called AGI Foundations, which worked on the latest versions of the company's large language models, known as Llama. The team drew criticism from executives this spring after the release of the latest Llama models underperformed expectations. It was dissolved as part of the reorganization. At least three members of the previous AGI Foundations team said internally that they were leaving the company around the time of Meta's latest vesting date, Aug. 15, according to internal posts viewed by The Wall Street Journal. It was after the Llama model release in April that Zuckerberg became personally involved in recruiting AI researchers. He approached employees of OpenAI, Google DeepMind and other labs with email overtures and WhatsApp messages that quickly led to offers that in some cases reached $100 million in total compensation. His offer to one researcher—Thinking Machines Lab co-founder Andrew Tulloch—could have been worth as much as $1.5 billion. (Tulloch declined the offer.) To spearhead Meta's AI efforts, Zuckerberg hired Scale AI co-founder Wang, securing him by paying $14 billion for a stake in his company. He also brought on former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman and Safe Superintelligence co-founder Daniel Gross, whose courtship involved Meta offering to buy a stake in their venture firm. As of mid-August, Meta had successfully hired more than 20 researchers and engineers from OpenAI for the effort, at least 13 from Google, three from Apple, three from xAI and two from Anthropic for a total of 50-plus new employees. Mounting concern from investors over the costs of the tech giants' AI buildout has played a role in this week's selloff of technology stocks. In an Aug. 18 research note, analysts at Morgan Stanley warned that the fast-rising stock-based compensation offered by Meta and Google to lure AI talent could threaten their ability to return capital to shareholders via buybacks. Lavish spending on talent, the analysts wrote, 'has the potential to drive AI breakthroughs with massive value creation or could dilute shareholder value without any clear innovation gains.' Meanwhile, Air India, which was acquired by the Tata group in January 2022, has recently been delaying and cancelling some flights at the last minute due to technical and maintenance issues. This comes despite repeated assurances from Air India CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson that the airline has carried out comprehensive checks on its Boeing 787 aircraft fleet. In a message to the customers recently, while listing out the various steps taken after the fatal crash of an AI-171 flight to London soon after take-off from the Ahmedabad airport, Wilson said detailed inspections of its Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft were done and 'no issues were found during inspection". On August 18, Air India said it cancelled its Zurich-Delhi flight of August 17 due to a technical reason, days after the Tata Group-owned airline stated that it had carried out a detailed 'inspection" of its Boeing 787 aircraft fleet and 'no issues" were detected, according to PTI. A Delhi-bound Air India plane, carrying Lok Sabha Member and Congress leader Hibi Eden among others, recently aborted take-off at the Kochi airport on Sunday due to a technical issue, according to the PTI report citing officials. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Google's new AI tool in Google Photos lets you edit photos instantly as you ask, first on Pixel 10 phones
Google is changing the way we interact with photo editing in Google Photos. Now you can simply ask Google Photos to edit your photos, just like you're chatting with a friend. The feature is first rolling out on the Google Pixel 10, allowing users to edit photos using simple language commands, either typed or spoken. This update removes the need for complicated tools, making photo editing simple for everyone. Building on the revamped photo editor with AI based suggestions for faster adjustments, this new feature lets you tap or circle specific areas in your photo. Google Photos will then offer automatic edits, like removing distractions, all without requiring manual settings or complicated menus. Thanks to the advanced AI models and multimodal capabilities, the tool can now generate custom AI driven edits, helping you achieve the ideal photo in just seconds. This feature is initially available on Pixel 10 phones and will expand to other devices soon. After taking a photo, open Google Photos, tap the edit icon, and simply speak or type your request to see the changes instantly. The 'Ask Photos' feature makes editing simple, helping you achieve the perfect photo with minimal effort. You can ask it to remove someone from the background, straighten a shot, or brighten up a dim photo. If the colours look off, just ask to boost them, or crop the image to bring the focus to where it matters most. Need to get rid of a reflection? Just ask. It's that easy. This tool takes the hassle out of editing and helps you get the perfect shot with minimal effort. If you're not sure exactly what you want to change but know something doesn't look quite right, you can simply use broad prompts like 'Make it better,' as Google suggests. From there, you can continue with follow up questions, making the conversation as specific as you need until you get the result you're imagining. This makes editing feel more like a natural back-and-forth, giving you control over your photo with ease. For example, this feature really shines in group photos. Suppose you've taken a great family photo, but notice someone blinking. Instead of asking everyone to pose again, just say 'Fix the blink,' and Google Photos will adjust the photo automatically. This tool lets you capture the moment without stressing over every detail, knowing you can always tweak it later. Pixel 10 adds content credentials for clear photo edits. (Google) Google's Pixel 10 leads the way with the new Content Credentials feature in Google Photos, offering users clear insights into how their images are captured and edited. This feature allows you to see if AI tools were used or if manual adjustments were made, providing a new level of transparency for photo edits. Initially available on the Pixel 10, this feature will gradually roll out to all Google Photos users across Android and iOS devices in the coming weeks. With this update, Google is enhancing user trust by ensuring transparency in the editing process. The Pixel 10's easy to use editing tools let you quickly adjust your photos, removing background clutter or brightening dark images. The 'Add Me' feature lets you easily add yourself to group photos. With these simple options, editing your photos is quick and easy.
