Transport employees union to go on hunger strike
Speaking to the reporters here on Saturday, union president KR Vijay Kumar said that the state govt has not implemented the wage revision agreement. Despite several requests in this regard, no decision was taken so far. If the govt does not come to a decision on this by May 31, a struggle will be launched to distribute free tickets to male passengers across the state under the Shakti Yojana, he said.
"Currently, fines are being imposed from the initial stage to the final stage only in NWKRTC, for ticketless travel. This is being imposed only from the initial stage to the inspection stage in other corporations. Many conductors lost their jobs and are on the streets due to the unscientific penalty method. They appealed to the head of the corporation several times, but did not receive a response. Therefore, we demand that the govt's directives be followed," he demanded.

'Haven't Been Paid For 5 Years': Declared Dead, Rohtak Man Breaks Down Before Collector
Last Updated: Vijay Kumar, surviving on food from temples and gurudwaras to feed his family, continues to suffer from the Public Health Department's administrative errors Declared 'dead" in Aadhaar records, a Rohtak man broke down during a Grievances Committee meeting, recounting how he has gone months without pay and years battling wage issues despite 15 years in the Public Health Department. The man alleged that he had been working in the Public Health Department at the DC rate (minimum wage rate) for the past 15 years but had not received a salary for the last five years. He was dismissed midway and, after being reinstated, has gone without pay for the past six months. Dressed in tattered clothes, he wept as officials revealed that he had been mistakenly declared dead in the Aadhaar records. DC Dharmendra Singh presided over the meeting, addressing various complaints. Vijay Kumar, the distressed individual, shared that he has been working for 16 years with a break in between, during which an XEN (Executive Engineer) had sent him home. After a transfer, a new XEN rehired him, but he has not been paid since the pandemic began. Vijay mentioned that he has filed a court case, explaining that departmental portals close upon his arrival, only reopening in court sessions. He added that his family ID was recently corrected by the ADC. DC Dharmendra Singh conceded that the mistakes by employees and officers led to Vijay being mistakenly listed as deceased. The necessary corrections have now been made, and officers have been instructed to resolve his issue promptly. The meeting received 16 complaints, with 10 resolved and 6 deferred to the next meeting. The Labour Court has issued payment orders, and Vijay's case will undergo further investigation to identify the cause of the oversight. view comments First Published: August 12, 2025, 15:37 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Land identified for depot of KSRTC e-buses at Balepuni
Mangaluru: KSRTC officials said that the corporation identified land at Balepuni, near Mudipu, to set up a depot for 100 electric buses sanctioned to Mangaluru under the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme. At the Transport Adalat held at the RTO office on Monday, an official from the KSRTC Mangaluru division mentioned that a final decision has not yet been taken. The KSRTC Mangaluru division has three depots in Mangaluru city, with a depot at Kuntikana housing 135 buses. The existing facilities will not be sufficient to accommodate an additional 100 electric buses, which will arrive soon. Land has been identified for a dedicated e-bus depot, and a proposal in this regard has been sent to the govt for approval. The work will begin once the process is completed, the official said. Participants at the Adalat raised several grievances about public transportation. Mohammed Ismail, vice-president of Dakshina Kannada District Muslim League, said that passengers of city buses from Deralakatte are made to get down at Pumpwell Junction despite availing tickets to the State Bank bus stand. Conductors force commuters to travel in another bus and cut short the trip. This causes a lot of inconvenience for commuters, especially senior citizens, he said. In response to a complaint raised by activist Hanumanth Kamath on the lack of bus connectivity to the Praja Soudha, new DC Office in Padil, RTO Shridhar K Mallad said that an appropriate decision will be taken at the RTA meeting to be held on Aug 18. There are plans to extend bus services to Padil from various destinations. New permits will also be issued to KSRTC and private bus operators to introduce buses to Padil from various destinations, he said. Issue tickets or face music, says RTO. The RTO directed private bus conductors to issue tickets to all passengers. After the issue was brought to notice at the meeting, the RTO said that he had already started a drive-by travelling in private buses and imposing penalties. "At least twice a week, I travel in a private bus to check whether conductors issue tickets to passengers. Penalties have been imposed on many conductors who failed to issue tickets," he said, adding that the drive will continue. Dakshina Kannada Taximen and Maxicab Association president Dinesh Kumpala M said that though six bus permits were issued on the Mangaluru - Kumpala route, only two buses are operating on the route. Meanwhile, one KSRTC bus on the route is also not operating regularly, he said. When participants at the meeting also raised similar complaints, the RTO said that the permits will be cancelled if private bus operators fail to operate buses on prescribed routes. Mangaluru: Private bus operators warned of permit cancellation if found flouting norms
Senior Regional Transport Officer and Deputy Commissioner of Transport (DCT), Mangaluru, Shridhar K. Mallad, on Monday, cautioned private bus operators of stringent action if they do not issue tickets, violate permit conditions and skip trips. Chairing the Sarige Adalat here, Mr. Mallad said, 'I travel in city buses twice or thrice a week and issue challans to conductors if they do not issue tickets. The Mangaluru Regional Transport Office is facing a shortage of personnel and, hence, I, myself, have been conducting enforcement activities,' the DCT said. His response came after activist Gerard Towers asked, 'If I die in a road accident while travelling in a bus without being issued a ticket for the fare paid, how will my wife get the compensation?' City bus operators particularly violate the provisions of the Indian Motor Vehicles Act by not issuing tickets, he charged. Mr. Mallad also said a penalty would be imposed for deviating from permitted routes and skipping trips. If the operators were found to be flouting the rule regularly, route permits would be cancelled, he cautioned. Responding to the demand made by social activist G.K. Bhat to introduce more city buses to Padil, where the new District Office Complex has come up, Mr. Mallad said buses coming from Moodbidri would be rerouted to ply via Padil. Buses with permits to ply to Kankanadi and Mallikatte too would be diverted to go via Padil and Mangaluru Junction Railway Station. He asked KSRTC to apply for new permits to operate services connecting Padil. Social activist G. Hanumanth Kamath complained of private city bus crew not issuing tickets, stopping buses all along the route, disturbing the traffic and of the lack of enforcement by the Transport Department to penalise the erring operators. KSRTC buses to Akasha BHavana Chudamani, secretary of Mangalore Citizen Association, complained of private operators putting a spoke in KSRTC's proposal to operate a city bus service between the State Bank bus terminal and Akasha Bhavana. Over 3,000 women reside in the Akasha Bhavana area, who would have benefited from KSRTC's Shakti, free travel for women scheme had there been bus services to the area, she said. Dinesh Kumpala complained about the irregular operation of private and KSRTC city bus services between Kumpala and the State Bank bus terminal. Mr. Bhat regretted that city buses do not stop at designated bus stops and instead stop at other places. In response to his complaint about the non-utilisation of the new Mangaladevi Bus Terminal, Mr. Mallad said he, along with traffic police officers, recently conducted a route survey and that the bus terminal would be put to use soon. The DCT also said prepaid autorickshaw counters at Mangaluru Central and Mangaluru Junction would soon be taken over by the government for operation.
