BBC Death Valley viewers 'switch off' in droves with one major complaint

Daily Record09-06-2025
BBC Death Valley was the BBC's most viewed launch show for a scripted comedy in five years.
Death Valley viewers were not happy with the third episode of the BBC show as many took to social media to claim they were going to 'switch off'.
The police drama, set in Wales, stars an unlikely duo - Timothy Spall as retired actor John Chapel and Gwyneth Keyworth as DS Janie Mallowan - as the force are tasked with looking into a series of deaths, including one of a best man at a wedding. The series explores the tension between John's past fame following his starring role as a fictional TV detective and Janie's ambition, as they navigate the challenges of their partnership while investigating the seemingly unrelated cases.

Viewers found a lot of talking points about the latest instalment, but not all of them good as they took to X, formerly Twitter, in their droves to have their say.

One fan, as writes the Express, had a simple statement to make, saying: 'What on earth is this s***? #DeathValley No wonder everyone is talking about it... It's utter drivel and woke toboot. Refund the BBC if this is the best they can s**t out."(sic)
Another joined in, adding: "Heard it was bad, but jeezo it's horrendously bad. The lead lady is soooo irritating and the script is chronically unfunny. A new low for BBC Sunday night viewing, absolutely horrendous."
One said: "Frustration peaked for some, prompting them to turn off their TVs, as one viewer confessed: "Caught up with #DeathValley on BBC1. I love stuff staring Timothy Spall but just had to turn off after a few minutes due to the awful co-star detective played by Gwyneth Keyworth shouting all the time. She must be one of the most annoying TV characters ever."
As the pile on continued, one said: ""I'm on the third episode of "Death Valley" - I really gave it a try, but it really doesn't get on me. I can't stand the main characters, they are cringe... in general I really like those shows, but this I'll skip and that Ludwig will return soon." And one added: "#DeathValley on BBC1 is one of the worst programmes I've ever sat through!".
However, not all viewers were so passionate with their criticism. One said: ""I know a lot of people seem to enjoy slagging off #DeathValley, and I admit that when I saw the initial trailer, I thought it looked poor.

"However, having binged the series the other day, I can quash my original reticence & say that I loved it. Daft, funny, cosy & Welsh." While another backed the show, adding: "Enjoying #DeathValley too. It's Sunday night viewing and I remember 'By the Sword Divided' and 'The Pallisers' so this is quite fun."
Despite some fans appearing disgruntled, the show has proved a hit for the BBC's Sunday night schedule and the first episode got 2.9million viewers on May 25, making it the most viewed launch for a new BBC scripted comedy in the past five years.

Paul Merton reveals big challenge of doing Have I Got News for You The 68-year-old comedian and the 65-year-old journalist Ian Hislop have been panellists on the BBC One comedy quiz show - which sees them and their celebrity teammate answer questions based on, and make light of, the week's top news stories - since 1990. Paul Merton on Have I Got News For You (Image: BBC) Paul Merton is struggling to find "new things to say" on Have I Got News for You as the same topics are making top news stories. ‌ The 68-year-old comedian and the 65-year-old journalist Ian Hislop have been panellists on the BBC One comedy quiz show - which sees them and their celebrity teammate answer questions based on, and make light of, the week's top news stories - since 1990. ‌ But as they are repeatedly making jokes about subjects - including US President Donald Trump, 79 - that are constantly in the news cycle, Paul finds it tricky to produce new material. ‌ He told the new issue of Loaded magazine: "There are certain news stories that won't go away. COVID was one, Brexit was another, and of course, Donald Trump. "It's difficult to find new things to say, but if those are the major stories, you have to cover them." Paul says that the producers of the show do not mention the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia every week because people want to hear good news stories. ‌ He explained: "We sometimes cover Ukraine, but you don't want a war story every week, as I think the reason people tune in is to escape from the bad news stories. "We have to make sure we're not concentrating too much on the gloomy stuff." Paul said it was "special" that his teenage idols - the late comedians Peter Cook and Spike Milligan - appeared on Have I Got News for You in 1992 and 1995 respectively. ‌ He added: "I think when you meet someone whom you deeply admired when you were a teenager, it's something special when you meet them as an adult. "Spike Milligan and Peter Cook, for example. They would stand out as extraordinary people that you couldn't quite believe you were sharing a screen with." Paul adored the comedienne Victoria Wood - who died of oesophageal cancer at the age of 62 in 2016 - and he thinks she turned down an offer to do Have I Got News for You because she was not keen on the programme. BBC announces major Beyond Paradise shake-up ahead of season four

BBC announces major Beyond Paradise shake-up ahead of season four The BBC has confirmed that they've made a major filming shake up for the fourth series of Beyond Paradise. The beloved BBC drama Beyond Paradise has revealed plans to broaden its filming locations for the upcoming series - potentially bringing production to areas closer to home, with additional spots now included in their schedule. ‌ Previously, audiences have become familiar with Shipton Abbott, the fictitious Devon village that serves as the programme's setting. Now, as the show prepares for its fourth series, the BBC has announced significant changes to their location strategy. ‌ Film crews have already established operations in Looe and Pentillie Castle within South East Cornwall. These picturesque rural settings have previously welcomed Detective Inspector Humphrey Goodman - portrayed by Kris Marshall - alongside his police team members in earlier episodes. ‌ Beyond Paradise share major show announcement (Image: BBC) This time around, however, the show's producers have chosen to widen their scope, recently announcing several thrilling new filming destinations, including Launceston, Saltash and Tavistock, whilst audiences eagerly anticipate the fourth series. Saltash Town Council has disclosed to the BBC that filming locations encompass Churchtown Farm, accompanied by concealed allotments in the vicinity, reports the Express. ‌ Kris Marshall will explore new locations (Image: BBC) A council representative confirmed their close collaboration with the production crew to minimise any inconvenience. A spokesperson commented: "We see this as a positive opportunity for Saltash, showcasing our town to a wider audience and supporting the creative industries." ‌ The Saltash Social Club on Fore Street also announced it would shut its doors on 11 August, with the venue being utilised for filming purposes. Beyond Paradise will now film in a number of new Devon locations (Image: BBC) Additional reports have surfaced that Beyond Paradise production crews had been seen at the West Devon Club on Abbey Place in Tavistock. ‌ BBC has confirmed that filming in Looe, which doubles as the fictional town of Shipton Abbott, will occur during peak tourist season - normally when visitors flock to the coastal destination and is more bustling. In previous series, the Sardine Factory restaurant underwent a transformation to become the renowned Ten Mile Kitchen, with owner and chef Ben Palmer noting the beneficial effect being on telly had on his establishment. He informed the broadcaster: "Beyond Paradise has had a very positive impact on the town. People are visiting us more here, which is great." Russell T Davies warns ‘fight is coming' with gay rights ‘rapidly getting worse'

Russell T Davies warns 'fight is coming' with gay rights 'rapidly getting worse' Doctor Who showrunner, Russell T Davies, ruled out any possibility of Michael Sheen becoming the next Doctor (Image: WalesOnline/Rob Browne) Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has warned that a "fight is coming" because gay rights are "rapidly and urgently getting worse". ‌ The award-winning screenwriter, 62, best known for reviving BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who in 2005, gained prominence in 1999 for writing Queer As Folk, a programme about the lives of three men living in Manchester's gay village. ‌ Davies is urging young people to use the "anger of the past" to protect gay rights amid growing support for Reform UK which has pledged to "ban transgender ideology" in schools. ‌ Speaking to the Big Issue, Davies said: "When Queer As Folk came out in 1999, if you'd said: 'What will gay rights be like in 2025?', we'd have said, 'oh, it will all be marvellous – it'll be sunshine and skipping down the street, hand in hand – gays, queers, lesbians, everyone'. "And look at where we are. Things got better but now things are rapidly and urgently getting worse. "What happens in America always happens here (the UK) – and as we look down the barrel of a Reform government, we, the gay community, queer community, should be revolting in terror and anger and action. ‌ "They're out to get us. The President of America is literally out to get us, is discounting us. "He would be happier with us invisible and gone, defunded, completely invisible if not biologically altered to become as straight as him. "I hope they're prepared to fight, that younger generation that has no idea how they got there. And neither should they – they're busy living their lives. ‌ "I didn't spend my youth looking back at World War Two, but I do think: 'are you prepared to fight, because a fight is coming?'" Davies' next Channel 4 series, Tip Toe, deals with the culture war that has radicalised some people into homophobia, transphobia and prejudice. Davies said: "I'm very proud of it. ‌ "It's radical, it's savage, and it's hilarious. "It is the strongest thing I've written – I do believe Queer As Folk, Cucumber, It's A Sin and Tip Toe are the ones that will be on my gravestone." Reform UK has been contacted for comment.
