Stalin has plunged Tamil Nadu into unprecedented debt, says Palaniswami

The Hindu4 days ago
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Saturday accused Chief Minister M.K. Stalin of plunging Tamil Nadu into unprecedented debt, claiming that the State now topped the chart in availing loans and burdening individuals with increasing liabilities.
Addressing a public meeting in Vedaranyam as part of his Makkalai Kappom, Thamizhagathai Meetpom campaign, Mr. Palaniswami said: 'Under Mr. Stalin's government, a child is born with a debt of ₹1.5 lakh. This is the result of financial mismanagement and poor governance.'
He alleged that the DMK government had borrowed over ₹5 lakh crore since coming to power this term and warned that the burden of repayment would fall on the people. 'To cover these debts, they will impose new taxes or increase existing ones. It is the public who will pay for the government's inefficiency,' he said. 'The DMK calls Mr. Stalin a 'Super Chief Minister' and claims Tamil Nadu leads the nation. But the State tops only in getting loans,' he added.
Vacancies in government posts
Mr. Palaniswami said nearly 5 lakh posts remained vacant across direct government departments and associated sectors. 'But under this government, only 50,000 vacancies have been filled,' he said. Over 20,000 government employees retired in a single month recently, and more than 75,000 retired over the past four years.
'When will all these vacancies be filled? In today's situation, even educated youth are struggling to find employment,' the former Chief Minister added.
While addressing a gathering in Nagapattinam Town, Mr. Palaniswami referred to the Nadanthai Vaazhi Cauvery project — an initiative estimated at ₹11,500 crore that was proposed during the AIADMK regime and approved by the Centre. He said preliminary work had begun with an initial outlay of ₹990 crore, aimed at preventing the mixing of contaminated water in the Cauvery and ensuring it is cleaned before release.
'This was a visionary project of the AIADMK government, but the DMK has shown no interest in taking it forward or pressing for its speedy implementation. When the AIADMK returns to power, we will work closely with the Centre and ensure it is completed,' he said.
Later in the day, a roadshow was held from Thagattoor Kadai Veethi to Vaimedu Kadai Veethi in Vedaranyam, drawing enthusiastic participation from party cadres and the public.
Earlier, Mr. Palaniswami visited the Velankanni Basilica, where he lit candles and offered prayers. He also visited the coastal villages of Seruthur and Nabiyarnagar, where he interacted with the fishing community.
In Nagapattinam town, he addressed another gathering at a private hall near Puthur, where he held discussions with representatives of farmer organisations, fishermen leaders, and students on issues affecting the district.

'EC Is Autonomous': Centre On Bihar Voter List Revision, Says Can't Respond On Poll Panel's Behalf

Last Updated: There were repeated disruptions in both Houses of Parliament as the opposition demanded a discussion on the issue of special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar Amid protests by the opposition against the voter list revision in poll-bound Bihar during the ongoing monsoon session in Parliament, the Centre has said while it is prepared to discuss all issues, when it comes to the Election Commission of India, it is an independent, autonomous body. According to government sources, the Centre cannot answer on behalf of the Election Commission of India (ECI) in Parliament. 'The government is ready to discuss all issues, but when it comes to the Election Commission (EC), it is an independent autonomous body. How can the government answer on behalf of the Election Commission in Parliament? The opposition should understand this," the sources said. There were repeated disruptions in both Houses of Parliament on Wednesday as the opposition demanded a discussion on the issue of special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. The Rajya Sabha was finally adjourned for the day soon after it met for the post-lunch sitting, while the Lok Sabha was adjourned for the third consecutive day amid noisy protests by the opposition. The Rajya Sabha had its first adjournment after it met at 11 am, and the second one at noon. Both times, it was adjourned after the opposition protested over the Bihar voter list revision issue. When it assembled for the third time at 2 pm, it was adjourned for the day after witnessing similar protests. At 2 pm, Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal moved the Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill 2025 for discussion and passing. As AIADMK MP M Thambidurai stood up to speak on the Bill, the opposition members continued their protest demanding discussion on the SIR issue, with some even trooping into the Well of the House, while many others remained on their feet. They raised slogans against the revision exercise, and also demanded that Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge be allowed to speak. Bhubaneswar Kalita, who was in the Chair, told Thambidurai that he can continue his speech later and adjourned the House for the day as the protests continued. Earlier in the day, too, the opposition members created uproar in the House following rejection of their adjournment notices demanding discussion on various issues, including SIR. Soon after the listed papers were tabled, deputy chairman Harivansh said he has received 25 notices under Rule 267 demanding discussion on SIR, demolition of slums in Delhi, alleged discrimination against migrant workers from Bengal in other states, and air safety. The Chair, however, rejected all the adjournment notices, leading to massive protest and sloganeering by the opposition. At noon, Ghanshyam Tiwari, who was in the Chair, called the Question Hour to be taken up but opposition members were on their feet and demanded that the SIR issue be discussed. Protesting members ignored requests by the Chair to allow the Question Hour to proceed, forcing adjournment. On Tuesday (July 22) also, the Rajya Sabha had witnessed several adjournments, mainly over SIR, and could not conduct any substantial business. WHAT HAPPENED IN THE LOK SABHA? Waving placards and raising slogans, opposition members stormed into the Well of the House during the Question Hour, leading to the adjournment of the proceedings for the day. Earlier the proceedings were adjourned till 2 pm when the protests and sloganeering continued. Opposition members raised slogans like 'SIR wapas lo (Roll back SIR)'. Speaker Om Birla said the protesting MPs were behaving as if they were on the streets and warned that he would be forced to take 'decisive" action against them. 'You should behave in a manner that reflects the hopes and aspirations of the people who have elected you. You should work in a manner and debate and discuss issues that will make people's lives easier. But you have been showing street-like behaviour in Parliament," Birla said. He added: 'The MPs are not supposed to carry placards. If you continue with such acts, I will be forced to take decisive action." The House witnessed repeated adjournments and could not function on the first two days of the monsoon session due to opposition protests over the demand for a discussion on Operation Sindoor and the SIR in Bihar. Karnataka gets 750 electric buses under PM-eBus Sewa scheme

) Karnataka has been allotted 750 electric buses under the Centre's PM-eBus Sewa scheme, but the government of Karnataka has been urging for direct subsidy instead of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) procurement model. In response to a question raised by Rajya Sabha MP D. Veerendra Heggade, Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu stated in Parliament that the Central Government had approved 750 e-buses for Karnataka under the scheme. 'As per the demand received from the State of Karnataka, a total of 750 electric buses have been sanctioned for all 10 eligible cities of the State under the PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme. Bengaluru and Udupi are not eligible as per the scheme's guidelines,' he said. Launched on August 16, 2023, the PM-eBus Sewa scheme aims to strengthen public transport systems by deploying 10,000 electric buses across India through a PPP model. 'Deployment of electric buses under the scheme is subject to completion of work related to associated infrastructure (behind-the-meter power and civil depot infrastructure). A total of 7,293 buses have been sanctioned so far out of which 6,518 buses have been tendered,' Mr. Sahu said. In Karnataka, Belagavi, Hubballi-Dharwad, Kalaburagi, Mangaluru, and Mysuru have each been allocated 100 buses while the remaining five eligible cities have been sanctioned 50 buses each. He emphasised that it was far more straightforward to procure and operate buses during the UPA era. 'Earlier, the Centre contributed 50% of the cost while the State and transport corporations shared the remaining 50% equally,' Mr. Reddy recalled. 'But now, under the NDA government, the subsidy is not given directly to States. Instead, private companies that win tenders receive the funding, own the buses, and are responsible for drivers and maintenance. The State-run corporations are only responsible for deploying conductors and paying the operator on a per-kilometre basis,' he added. Mr. Reddy has urged the Central Government to revert to the earlier model by directly providing financial assistance to State transport corporations for a more transparent and efficient rollout. Karnataka plans to introduce a total of 14,750 electric buses during the financial year 2025-26. A senior official from the Transport Department said that these buses would be procured through a combination of schemes, including PM-eBus Sewa, PM e-DRIVE, and other externally aided initiatives. In addition to the e-buses, the State intends to add 1,000 diesel buses under the Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model, which involves hiring private operators to run State-owned buses.
