Stalin has plunged Tamil Nadu into unprecedented debt, says Palaniswami

The Hindu19-07-2025
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Saturday accused Chief Minister M.K. Stalin of plunging Tamil Nadu into unprecedented debt, claiming that the State now topped the chart in availing loans and burdening individuals with increasing liabilities.
Addressing a public meeting in Vedaranyam as part of his Makkalai Kappom, Thamizhagathai Meetpom campaign, Mr. Palaniswami said: 'Under Mr. Stalin's government, a child is born with a debt of ₹1.5 lakh. This is the result of financial mismanagement and poor governance.'
He alleged that the DMK government had borrowed over ₹5 lakh crore since coming to power this term and warned that the burden of repayment would fall on the people. 'To cover these debts, they will impose new taxes or increase existing ones. It is the public who will pay for the government's inefficiency,' he said. 'The DMK calls Mr. Stalin a 'Super Chief Minister' and claims Tamil Nadu leads the nation. But the State tops only in getting loans,' he added.
Vacancies in government posts
Mr. Palaniswami said nearly 5 lakh posts remained vacant across direct government departments and associated sectors. 'But under this government, only 50,000 vacancies have been filled,' he said. Over 20,000 government employees retired in a single month recently, and more than 75,000 retired over the past four years.
'When will all these vacancies be filled? In today's situation, even educated youth are struggling to find employment,' the former Chief Minister added.
While addressing a gathering in Nagapattinam Town, Mr. Palaniswami referred to the Nadanthai Vaazhi Cauvery project — an initiative estimated at ₹11,500 crore that was proposed during the AIADMK regime and approved by the Centre. He said preliminary work had begun with an initial outlay of ₹990 crore, aimed at preventing the mixing of contaminated water in the Cauvery and ensuring it is cleaned before release.
'This was a visionary project of the AIADMK government, but the DMK has shown no interest in taking it forward or pressing for its speedy implementation. When the AIADMK returns to power, we will work closely with the Centre and ensure it is completed,' he said.
Later in the day, a roadshow was held from Thagattoor Kadai Veethi to Vaimedu Kadai Veethi in Vedaranyam, drawing enthusiastic participation from party cadres and the public.
Earlier, Mr. Palaniswami visited the Velankanni Basilica, where he lit candles and offered prayers. He also visited the coastal villages of Seruthur and Nabiyarnagar, where he interacted with the fishing community.
In Nagapattinam town, he addressed another gathering at a private hall near Puthur, where he held discussions with representatives of farmer organisations, fishermen leaders, and students on issues affecting the district.

Service rendered in autonomous body to be counted for grant of gratuity at Centre

New Delhi, The service rendered in the autonomous body by an employee would be counted for the grant of gratuity in the central government, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Thursday. Service rendered in autonomous body to be counted for grant of gratuity at Centre The Department of Pension and Pensioners' Welfare has notified the Central Civil Services Rules, 2021 for central government civilian employees, Union Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh said in a written reply. These rules are not suo motu applicable to the employees of autonomous bodies, he said. "However, DoPPW vide Office Memorandum No.7/5/2012-P&PW/B dated 12th February, 2020 provides that on mobility from autonomous bodies having National Pension System with provision of retirement/death gratuity for its employees similar to that in the central government, the service rendered in the autonomous body would be counted for grant of gratuity in central government subject to condition that the employee resigns with proper permission to take another appointment in the government," Singh said. The payment of gratuity, payment of interest or counting of service duration and the like by the autonomous bodies depends on the particular gratuity rules being followed by the particular autonomous body as the rules of DoPPW are not suo motu applicable to the employees of autonomous bodies, the minister added. He was asked about the "details of rule position which allows an NPS employee, who moved from autonomous body to the government with proper permission and technical resignation, to opt not to have past service rendered in autonomous body counted in the Central Government and to receive payment of gratuity for past service", among others. President of the All India NPS Employees Federation, Manjeet Singh Patel, welcomed the Centre's response and said it will help in removing any doubt from the minds of employees concerned. "It is a very welcoming move by the government to assert that the service rendered in an autonomous body would be counted for the grant of gratuity in the central government. It will help in removing any doubt from the minds of the government employee concerned," he told PTI. This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

'Even If Male Child Is Born…': Priyank Kharge's 'Credit Politics' Swipe At BJP Over Bengaluru Metro

Last Updated: Karnataka minister Priyank Kharge said the BJP seems to have forgotten that the Metro project is a 50-50 between the central and state governments Karnataka minister Priyank Kharge on Thursday took a swipe at the BJP for indulging in 'credit politics" over the soon-to-be-launched yellow line of Bengaluru Metro. Though it was not clear as to the comparison, he said the party would take credit even for the birth of a male child. Kharge said the BJP seems to have forgotten that the Metro project is a 50-50 between the Centre and Karnataka. 'Even if a male child is born, BJP will take credit," Kharge said ahead of the inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 10. 'Let them take credit for it… They forget 50% of project funding is from Karnataka and 50% from the Centre…" #WATCH | Bengaluru | On BJP statement on Bengaluru metro project, Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge says, "Let them take credit for it… They forget 50% of project funding is from Karnataka and 50% from the Centre… Why were they reduced to two digits in Karnataka?… Why take… — ANI (@ANI) August 7, 2025 Kharge further targeted BJP MP Tejasvi Surya for claiming credit on behalf of the BJP. He said Karnataka's prosperity was a result of the state government's effort or 'through central contribution", asking if his good work in future will also be attributed to the BJP. His statement comes days after deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar stressed that both state and central governments hold shares in the Metro projects. He said serving the people was more important than 'credit politics". Shivakumar, who is also the minister in-charge for Bengaluru development, had inspected the yellow line of 'Namma Metro' (Bengaluru Metro) ahead of its inauguration. 'This is our metro. The CM and I had requested the PM to inaugurate the yellow line and he has given the time now. This is not a project of the central government alone, the state too has 50% share in the project. We are all serving the public," Shivakumar said in response to a question. He added: 'The PM will inaugurate the yellow line on August 10. The 19.15-km line with 16 stations was built at a cost of Rs 7,610 crore. A small programme will be organised at the auditorium in Indian Institute of Management, Bengaluru. The PM, CM and the local legislators would travel in the inaugural trip of the train thereafter…we will submit an appeal to the PM on funds needed for the double decker project's land acquisition." He, too, took a swipe at BJP MPs representing Bengaluru, as all three Lok Sabha seats of the city are represented by the saffron party. 'It would be nice if the MPs who are making a lot of noise got us some funds. The MPs don't speak a word on the funds, but are engaged in nitpicking…" he said. The Commissionerate of Railway Safety gave the clearance for the yellow line on July 31. Shivakumar further hit out at Surya, the Bengaluru South BJP MP, for alleging delay in opening the line for the service of the people. 'We can't rush through things like safety. Our MP is a young blood in a hurry and doesn't have any experience," he added. Tamil Nadu's DMK Battles Governor RN Ravi Over Assent For Bills, Again

Chennai: In a fresh flashpoint between the Tamil Nadu government and Governor RN Ravi, the Governor has reserved the Kalaignar Centenary University Bill for the consideration of the President of India, Raj Bhavan sources confirmed. The Bill, which was passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly in April, proposes the establishment of the university and seeks to designate the Chief Minister as its Chancellor, departing from the current norm where the Governor holds the post. The move has triggered sharp criticism from the ruling DMK, which has accused Governor Ravi of committing contempt of court by not adhering to the recent Supreme Court directive that Governors must act on Bills within a strict timeline, i.e., within a month, in the case of referring them to the President or otherwise within a maximum of three months. Rajya Sabha MP and counsel for the Tamil Nadu government, P Wilson, told NDTV, "By going into the validity of the Bill, the Governor has committed contempt of the Supreme Court. He has no role to decide. He is also duty-bound to act on the aid and advice of the Council of Ministers, which he has clearly overlooked." This latest standoff comes in the backdrop of the Supreme Court's recent intervention, where it ruled that ten Bills passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly and referred to the President -despite being passed twice-were deemed to have received assent. The court had invoked its extraordinary constitutional powers to ensure legislative efficacy in the state. However, the Madras High Court subsequently stayed nine of those, especially those that dealt with stripping the Governor of powers to appoint Vice-Chancellors in state universities, adding a new legal layer to the ongoing tussle. While the DMK hoped to start admissions under the new university in the current academic year, the Governor's move is seen as a major setback, potentially delaying opportunities for students. The ruling party has also slammed what it sees as the Centre's silence, alleging that Governors in Opposition-ruled states are repeatedly defying Supreme Court rulings and undermining elected governments by misusing their constitutional immunity. This confrontation highlights the growing constitutional tensions between state governments and Governors, especially in states ruled by non-BJP parties, raising critical questions about federalism, legislative autonomy, and institutional checks and balances in India's democracy despite the Supreme Court's significant ruling.
