One dead, 13 injured in three-vehicle crash in Machang
MACHANG: A man was killed and 13 others were injured in an accident involving three vehicles at Kilometre 9.4, Jalan Machang-Pasir Puteh (Banggol Judah), here last night.
Machang district police chief, Superintendent Ahmad Shafiki Hussin, said the incident, which occurred at around 11.45 pm, involved a Chevrolet four-wheel drive, a Proton Waja and a Perodua Kancil.
'Initial investigations found that the Chevrolet pickup truck carrying five individuals from Machang to Pasir Puteh lost control and skidded into the opposite lane before colliding head-on with a Proton Waja carrying six individuals from the opposite direction,' he said in a statement today.
As a result of the collision, the driver of the Proton Waja died at the scene of the incident after being trapped in the vehicle.
'The Perodua Kancil that was behind the Proton Waja with three individuals including a child was also involved when it crashed into the involved vehicle,' he said.
Ahmad Shafiki said the victim's body had been sent to Machang Hospital for a post-mortem, while 13 other injured victims were taken to Machang Hospital and Tanah Merah Hospital for further treatment.
According to him, the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Man injured after being rammed by car at burger stall
KUALA LUMPUR: A 39-year-old man was injured when a car crashed into him while he eating at a burger stall on Sunday evening. The incident, which occurred at 7pm in Section 17, Shah Alam, involved a Proton Wira driven by a 55-year-old man. TAWAU: Five foreigners who rammed a police roadblock while attempting to flee at the Megah Industrial Zone at 8pm were arrested after a 45km high-speed chase last Wednesday. District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the suspects, aged between 29 and 43, included the male driver, two male passengers, and two female passengers. 'The vehicle was ordered to stop by a team from the Police Patrol Car Unit (MPV) and Motorcycle Patrol Unit (URB), who were conducting a roadblock operation. 'However, the driver defied police instructions and attempted to escape by crashing through the checkpoint, prompting our officers to pursue them,' he said. The chase continued through several main roads including Jalan Timur, Kem Pengakap Tiku, Jalan Bunga Raya, Jalan Chong Thien Vun, and Jalan Apas, before it was eventually stopped at Batu 12, Jalan Apas. Upon inspection, police found none of the occupants, including the driver, could produce any identification. The driver did not possess a valid driving licence or road tax. The case is being investigated under Section 26(2) of the Police Act 1967 for fleeing a police checkpoint and Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant in the discharge of their duties. Investigations are also being carried out under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for unlawful entry and stay in the country without valid identification or travel documents. The driver is also being investigated under Section 26 and Section 23 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving without a valid licence and road tax. ACP Jasmin said none of the police personnel were injured and that the authorities view such incidents very seriously. Police detain man, seize 365kg of syabu worth over RM13 mln in Perlis
KANGAR (June 3): Perak police seized over 365 kilogrammes (kg) of syabu (methamphetamine) estimated to be worth RM13.14 million and detained a 40-year-old man at Kampung Belat Batu, Beseri near Padang Besar yesterday. Its police chief, Datuk Muhammad Abdul Halim said the drug seizure and arrest, based on information received, were carried out by a police team from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (JSJN), of the Perlis contingent police headquarters (IPK) at 3.30 am. He said before the arrest, the suspect was seen alighting from a Proton Waja car and heading towards another car, a Toyota Vios. 'The results of an inspection on the Toyota Vios car found 17 stitched bags containing drugs suspected to be methamphetamine, believed to have originated from Thailand,' he said at a press conference at the Perlis IPK here today. Muhammad said initial investigations found that the suspect is believed to have used a forest area in the Padang Besar district as a transit point before the drugs were sent to the southern part of the country, with the amount of the illicit substance being enough for 3.6 million addicts. He said the initial urine screening of the man found him positive for methamphetamine and he possessed past criminal records related to drug cases. 'The suspect has been remanded for seven days starting June 1 (yesterday) and the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Police are tracking down another suspect who fled to assist in the investigation,' he said. Meanwhile, Muhammad also said that a 30-year-old Thai man was arrested by the police along with the seizure of two packages of compressed ganja (cannabis), weighing two kilogrammes, hidden in a garbage bin in the Taman Singgah Sana area, Padang Besar at 2.15 am yesterday. 'The drugs are estimated to be worth RM6,200 and can be used by around 20,000 addicts The suspect was also found to be positive for methamphetamine.
