Exclusive! Genelia Deshmukh on the role of South cinema in shaping her career and her thoughts on love stories
Genelia Deshmukh After over a decade of consciously stepping back from the spotlight following the 2012 release of Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya to focus on family life, Genelia Deshmukh is embracing a new chapter — one shaped by motherhood, maturity, and a rekindled love for cinema. In a conversation with BT, the actress, who was recently seen in Sitaare Zameen Par, opens up about evolving with time, the role of South cinema in shaping her career, and why mature roles need more screen time. 'Riteish and I continue to do things that we always enjoyed doing together' Genelia, who has been married to Riteish Deshmukh for 13 years, says marriage evolves with time. She shares, 'A lot changes post marriage. People forget that you're going to change at 30, 40 and 50. You're not going to be 20 all your life, and I think that's the issue in most relationships. You expect the person to stay the way they were at 16. Riteish and I know we aren't in our 20s, but we continue to do things that we always enjoyed doing together. We liked going out for dinners a lot, but with children around, it gets tough. So, once a week, we go to a coffee shop, hold hands and talk. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like She Was The Dream Girl In The 1980s, Here She Is Now. Boite A Scoop Undo That's our idea of romance.' 'Earlier, the perception was that Bollywood dropouts make it big in the South' Today, pan-India films are seeing actors from Bollywood being cast alongside South actors. Genelia, who made her film debut in 2003 with Tujhe Meri Kasam, did South films from the early days of her career. About the current pan-India trend, she says, 'I don't know why it took so long. I did it very early in my career, and I did it with pride. I just wanted to do good films; it was never about pitching one above the other. Earlier, the perception was that Bollywood dropouts make it big in the South. I've done some of my best work there. I thought my first film would be my last, and then I would take up a 9-5 job. But then I got a lot of work in the South and started falling in love with acting because of South cinema.' Talking about her break from movies, she says, 'During the last 10 years, I did special appearances whenever my friends asked me to. I also did Trial Period, which was an OTT project and Mister Mummy. I am happy that a film like Sitaare Zameen Par came my way.' 'I'm a different person now, but I still have that madness in me' Genelia admits that this phase of her career feels different from her early years in the industry. 'I'm a different person now, but I still have that madness in me. I'll always want to keep the child in me alive. At the start of your career, you have to make sure you do things that really work. Now, I want to do a horror film. I want to do action. It all depends on what filmmakers are writing and what you are being offered,' she says. ' Love stories aren't just for the young' The actress is hopeful the industry keeps pace with changing narratives and embraces more mature female characters. She says, 'I wish we would write more stories about women who are in their 30s, 40s or 50s. There are so many dynamics to that, which is interesting. Love stories aren't just for the young. Why isn't there a love story of a 30-year-old girl or a single mother? Love doesn't happen only when you are in college. I don't think I could play a good mom on screen if I weren't a mom in real life. I think you bring nuances to the screen when you actually live it. Which is why I say that actors should be cast as per the demand of the role and not because of their Instagram following or because they are number one, two or three.'

Johny Lever Says He Was A 'Drunkard', Would Drink Till 4 AM At Chowpatty: 'Had Crossed My Limits'
Johnny Lever recalled that he would drink every day at Mumbai's Chowpatty Beach, and the police—recognizing him—would allow him to do so safely in their car. Johny Lever has spent over forty years in the industry, and has seen his own fair share of ups and downs. At one point, he was one of the most successful comedians, acting in films and performing on stage. In a recent chat with comedians Sapan Verma, Aakash Gupta, and his daughter Jamie Lever, Johny revealed that he used to be heavily into drinking, staying at Mumbai's Chowpatty drinking until 4 am. During an appearance on Sapan Verma's YouTube show, Johny, joined by his daughter Jamie, reminisced about his demanding schedule and how his overwhelming success negatively impacted his health and lifestyle. He explained that he often felt exhausted, juggling film shoots during the day and stage performances at night, combined with heavy drinking. This routine left him feeling completely drained. Despite his exhaustion, Johny consistently delivered his performances, although he felt completely depleted afterwards. He advised moderation, sharing his own experience of excessive drinking until 4 am at Chowpatty, where even the police, recognizing him, allowed him to drink safely in their car. 'I request people—limit mein piyo (drink in moderation). I had crossed my limits, and it's not worth it. I was a drunkard. I would sit at Chowpatty and drink till 4 in the morning. Many times, the police would come, but when they recognised me, they would laugh and say, 'Arre, Johnny bhai,' and let me sit in their car to continue drinking safely," he said. Discussing the impact of success, Johny noted that his constant presence in movies and international shows led to a loss of self. He ultimately decided to quit drinking and has remained sober for the past 24 years. 'Success can mess with your mind. At one point, no movie was made without me. I was also doing international shows and constantly traveling. I lost myself in all of it," he said. In recent years, Johny Lever has become selective with his roles. This year, he has already appeared in three movies: Badass Ravi Kumar, Be Happy, and Housefull 5, with another film, Welcome To The Jungle, set to release, although the official date is yet to be announced. Gargi Kundu opens up about facing harsh comments on her skin and identity
Actress and content creator Gargi Kundu has opened up about the harsh criticism she has faced over the years. She revealed that she was often mocked for her skin tone, appearance, and identity. Speaking candidly, she shared how these experiences shaped her journey and strengthened her resolve. Gargi, who is known for her role in the show 'Society' on Jio Hotstar, shared, 'I was mocked for my looks every day. People called me 'behenji', said my specs were too big, and even made fun of my skin colour. It hurt—but I never let it define me.' 'It felt like I was being judged for just being myself. I wear my glasses with pride. I love my skin. And I'm not here to meet someone else's standards,' she asserted. The actress shared life inside the society house wasn't any easier for Gargi. For the unversed, Gargi Kundu began her artistic career with classical training in Bharatanatyam and folk dance, and was actively involved in theatre and Bollywood-style performances from a young age. Her early exposure to the performing arts laid the groundwork for her later work across various creative platforms. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Gargi worked as a medical professional, offering help on the ground while also turning to storytelling to express the grief and uncertainty of the time. This period marked a turning point as she began creating short, relatable videos online—many of which went viral. Her growing popularity on social media led to roles in Bengali television and films, and eventually to appearances in pan-Indian OTT content including web series, music videos, and advertisements. She made her debut in the world of reality television with the show, 'Society.' The show featured 25 contestants competing in a tier-based format—Royals, Regulars, and Rags—facing daily challenges to win the title of 'Asli Baazigar.' Hosted by comedian Munawar Faruqui and co-hosted by Shreya Kalra, the show focused on social dynamics, survival, and strategy.
