Wayne Rooney Hits Back At Tom Brady After Work Ethic Jibe: 'He Doesn't Understand Football...'

News184 hours ago
Tom Brady, a minority shareholder in Birmingham, had expressed concern about Wayne Rooney's work ethic during the latter's tenure as the head coach.
Wayne Rooney has called Tom Brady's criticism of his work ethic 'unfair" and stated that the NFL legend does not understand football. Former Manchester United and England captain Rooney was dismissed as Birmingham manager in January 2024 after serving less than three months.
Seven-time Super Bowl champion quarterback Brady, who became a minority shareholder in Birmingham in August 2023, expressed concern about the head coach's work ethic in a recently aired documentary after visiting the Blues' training ground two months later.
'I think Tom came in once, which was the day before a game when the days are generally lighter, and I don't think he really understood football that well," Rooney mentioned on his new podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show, which is available on the BBC's digital platforms.
'Football is not NFL — NFL operates for three months a year. Players do need rest as well, so I think it's very unfair how he's portrayed that."
Following Rooney's departure, Birmingham appointed Tony Mowbray and Gary Rowett as managers for the 2023/24 season but were relegated to League One.
'When I joined Birmingham, they were in a real mess," added Rooney. 'The players weren't the type who could take the club forward."
Since then, the project led by the American-based hedge fund Knighthead Capital has seen a turnaround.
Birmingham's wealthy backers invested an unprecedented £30 million ($41 million) in transfers for a League One club last season and set an English Football League record by amassing 111 points as they clinched the title.
'Listen, I respect Tom Brady massively," said Rooney. 'He's one of the greatest, if not the greatest athletes of all time, and Birmingham now seems to be heading in the right direction, which is good. I think they have managed to get rid of the players they needed to."

‘I failed into an incredible job': Man claims he was 'handed interview' for $125,000 role by recruiter

A 25-year-old American man claimed he 'failed upwards' into a six-figure job without ever landing an interview through a job application. In a Reddit post titled 'I failed into an incredible job and have no idea what advice to give to my friends,' the man detailed how a series of unexpected career twists landed him a $125,000-a-year automation job. The man said he has never received a single interview from an application, despite sending out 'hundreds.'(Representational) After months of unsuccessful job hunting after graduating from college, the man said he finally landed a $65,000 validation role, only to be fired after a few months. 'I didn't even bother putting it on my resume,' he admitted. Six months later, he secured an $80,000 automation position and held it for a while, but he was eventually let go. Again, just two weeks later, a recruiter contacted him with another opportunity that led to his current $125,000 position, despite what he describes as his careless interview style: showing up in Hawaiian shirts and speaking 'like I was in a Discord call.' Remarkably, he said he has never received a single interview from an application, despite sending out 'hundreds.' Every job, he claimed, has come from recruiters reaching out to him directly. 'My friends are convinced I'm some really successful and capable dude,' he wrote, 'and I'm just sitting here thinking… I genuinely don't know what to tell them.' He added that his girlfriend is also still stuck in a part-time government position despite sending out more than 1,000 applications. His story has struck a chord with job seekers online, sparking debate about the role of luck and networking in job hunts. "Sounds like you have had some great luck with the recruiters but more importantly, you are good at interviewing and can prove your worth. Not everyone is blessed with this skill, in fact, most aren't," said one Reddit user. Another added, "You've got something about you, clearly! Confidence and the ability to sell your talents lands you jobs. Have you ever been told you would be good at sales?"

Phelps calls USA Swimming leadership weak, demands systemic overhaul

Michael Phelps has launched a scathing attack on USA Swimming's leadership, with the 23-time Olympic gold medallist branding the body weak and demanding sweeping reforms after what he sees as years of organisational decline. The 40-year-old American, the most decorated Olympian of all time with 28 medals, revealed he might not want his four young sons competing in the sport given the current state of swimming in the United States. Phelps traced his frustrations back through his competitive career, saying he often felt that his voice went unheard, that he was 'told to be grateful for the chance to compete,' and that it was more important to stay quiet and to keep the peace. 'First, I must be clear that I have the utmost respect for the U.S. swimmers that competed at the World Championships,' Phelps, who retired in 2016, wrote in a lengthy Instagram statement. 'My criticism is in no way directed at them—I know how hard they work and how honoured they are to represent the U.S. National Team. My criticism is about the system, its leadership, and how it's failing. 'There have always been cracks in the system but in the last nine years, I've seen those cracks grow.' Reuters has contacted USA Swimming for comment. 'Poor leadership' Phelps also revealed that he sent a letter to USA Swimming earlier this year addressing his 'frustrations with the current state of the sport,' which was shared with the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee, outlining his concerns. He said he had the support of former Olympic medallists, world record holders, coaches and current and former staff members but added that the letter 'seemed to fall on deaf ears'. 'I've asked myself what's changed in our sport, and the answer is clear... this isn't on the athletes, as they continue to do the best they can with what they've been given. This is on the leadership of USA Swimming,' he added. ALSO READ | United States breaks mixed 4x100m freestyle relay world record at World Swimming Championships 'Poor leadership trickles down and can impact an organisation at every level. 'Money is a factor. But poor operational controls and weak leadership are a cornerstone of the sport's problems.' Phelps proposed a series of reforms, including an independent review of USA Swimming's Board of Directors and its organisation, improving athlete services and strengthening grassroots efforts to reverse membership decline and foster growth. 'I offer up my service to be a resource in these proposed initial steps and I am hopeful that the USA Swimming community will accept my offer,' he added. Lochte criticism Earlier this month, Phelps, along with six-time Olympic champion Ryan Lochte, made their disappointment clear after the U.S. team's performance at the World Championships in Singapore. Lochte shared an image on social media of a tombstone with the inscription: 'In loving memory of United States Swimming. They set the bar high -- until they stopped reaching for it.' We've got 3 years.' Phelps shared Lochte's post and added: 'Is this the wake-up call USA swimming needed?' Despite early struggles in Singapore, the U.S. finished top of the medals table with nine gold medals and 29 medals overall. Related Topics Michael Phelps
