McDonald's unveils spicy twist with new breakfast menu lineup

Chicago Tribune08-07-2025
McDonald's announced Tuesday morning that it has turned up the heat on breakfast with the launch of its new Spicy McMuffin sandwich lineup.
The limited time offer features three takes on the iconic McMuffin: the Spicy Egg McMuffin, Spicy Sausage McMuffin and Spicy Sausage McMuffin with Egg. Each sandwich is served on a toasted English muffin with melted cheese and either sausage or Canadian bacon. The sandwiches are finished with a drizzle of McDonald's signature Spicy Pepper Sauce.
'I love anything spicy and I'm a sucker for McDonald's breakfast, so this sounds like a fast-food dream, especially if I've had one too many cocktails the night before,' said Alex Darus a food reporter for cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer.
According to McDonald's, the menu additions mark a significant seasonal update and coincide with the original Egg McMuffin's 50th anniversary. The company also noted that eggs used in the new sandwiches are now 100% cage-free in the U.S., part of their ongoing sustainability commitments.
The spicy sandwiches are only available for a limited time at participating locations nationwide, but McDonald's did not say for how long the new sandwiches would be around.
McDonald's recently announced the return of its fan-favorite Snack Wrap, which will be available nationwide Thursday.
Here's a look at the newest limited-time items heating up the McDonald's menu this summer:
Blueberry & Crème Pie: A sweet summer twist on McDonald's classic baked pie, this limited-time dessert features warm layers of blueberries and smooth vanilla crème in a golden, flaky crust.
(Available nationwide while supplies last)
The Daily Double: The double-patty burger is topped with American cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions and mayo, and now it's part of the McValue Meal Deal lineup starting at $6 or $7.
(Available nationwide through the end of 2025)
HERSHEY'S S'mores McFlurry: The seasonal McFlurry blends McDonald's vanilla soft serve with chunks of HERSHEY'S Milk Chocolate, marshmallows and graham crackers.
(Available now nationwide for a limited time only)

Cleveland asks judge to halt all work on new Browns stadium in Brook Park

Cleveland had hoped to use The Art Modell Law to keep the Browns from leaving downtown for Brook Park. With Ohio changing the Modell law to allow an in-state move, the Browns had to move to Plan B. Via Adam Ferrise of Cleveland wants to halt all efforts to build a new stadium based on the terms of the team's current lease. On the surface, its no issue. The lease runs through 2028. The Browns, in theory, are free to play elsewhere as of 2029. At a deeper level, it's more complicated. The question is whether and to what extent the Browns may take affirmative steps to line up a new home before the lease expires. The city wants a court order preventing the Browns from doing anything in connection with the building of a new team until the lease ends — from funding to permitting to construction and beyond. The city also wants the Browns to be prevented from accepting money 'from any source' or to even 'carry out any negotiations for it.' The lawsuit, if successful, would essentially force the Browns to spend multiple lame-duck years in Cleveland without a long-term deal, while they get their new stadium built in Brook Park. It may be simply a leverage play aimed at striking a deal. A simple one, like the Browns agreeing to help pay for the demolition of the current stadium once the new one is open.

Popeyes debuts two new menu items. When can you try them?

Popeyes newest menu items were made for dipping. Chicken dippers arrived at participating restaurants Monday, July 14, alongside a new signature sauce inspired by Popeyes' New Orleans roots, according to the Miami-based chicken chain. Customers can dunk the dippers — thin strips of white meat chicken battered in Popeyes' signature spice blend — in a sauce that blends 'the bold flavors of the Louisiana 'holy trinity;' bell pepper, celery, and onion,' Popeyes said in a news release. Prices start at $4.99 but may vary by location, according to the restaurant's website. 'We took our time developing it over the last five years, ensuring we landed on something undeniably Popeyes,' Chef Amy Alarcon, vice president of culinary innovation at Popeyes, said of the signature sauce. This 'is a monumental moment for our brand, and one we approached with care, knowing it had the potential to become an iconic part of our menu,' she said. The chicken dippers are available for a limited time, but the signature sauce is here to stay, according to Popeyes. It'll join classic dipping sauces including barbecue, blackened ranch and honey mustard. The dippers' debut comes at the heels of Popeyes latest menu innovation: chicken wraps. A first for the chicken chain, each 'grab-and-go style' wrap features a full-sized chicken tender, lettuce, cheese, pickles and customers' choice of sauce. Popeyes beat rival McDonald's to the punch, launching its wraps a day before the Golden Arches teased the highly anticipated return of its snack wrap. 'Infusing the flavors from our famous biscuit into our wraps was the perfect way to ensure our signature flavors shined through,' Alarcon said at the time. Find your nearest Popeyes here.

McDonald's new spicy breakfast items are here: How long they're available

McDonald's is unveiling a series of new options to help "spice up" its breakfast menu as part of the fast food chain's 50th anniversary celebrations for the McMuffin. The three new spicy breakfast menu items include the Spicy McMuffin, Spicy Sausage McMuffin and Spicy Sausage McMuffin with Egg. The items will feature their traditional ingredients – cheese, egg, Canadian bacon or sausage and a buttered English muffin, topped with Spicy Pepper Sauce, according to a news release from McDonald's. The items are available beginning July 8 for a limited time at participating locations, according to the fast food chain. McDonald's launched the Egg McMuffin in 1975. The breakfast item was the brainchild of Herb Peterson, a McDonald's franchisee in Santa Barbara, California. Herb, according to previous USA TODAY reporting, presented the sandwich as a to-go version of a diner classic: Eggs Benedict. Roy Kroc, the businessman who transformed McDonald's into what it is today, loved the idea. The iconic fast food chain also has a new double burger on its menu: the Daily Double. The Daily Double, available now nationwide, is made with two beef patties, a slice of American cheese plus shredded lettuce, slivered onions, mayo and two tomato slices. The burger had been available in limited markets including Chicago, Miami and Seattle, but will be available nationally through 2025, the company said. On July 22, the Daily Double will join McDonald's McValue Meal Deal options, served with a 4-piece order of Chicken McNuggets, small fries and small soft drink ($6 or $7; pricing depends on your restaurant). That menu still includes the $5 Meal Deal. The burger is now appearing in the McDonald's app, where you can also get deals including a free medium order of fries with a $1 purchase in the app every Friday through the end of 2025.
