He said councillors must not only represent the people's voice but also act as effective agents in executing government initiatives, especially the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) Development Plan. He urged councillors to be proactive, well-informed, and fully aware of their roles and responsibilities in serving the public. Hajiji made the remarks during the swearing-in and appointment letter presentation ceremony for Tuaran District Councillors for the 2025–2027 term. He stressed that the success of the SMJ Development Plan relies heavily on the commitment of all stakeholders, including local authorities and councillors, to disseminate government programmes to the grassroots. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Upko urges stern, proactive actions after Zara Qairina case
Published on: Thursday, August 14, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 14, 2025 Text Size: Upko deputy president Datuk Donald Peter Mojuntin ( pic ) has urged for stern and proactive actions to tackle school bullying and strengthen procedures in suspicious death cases, following the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir. He said rising bullying incidents in schools, including cyberbullying, have become a serious concern, with official data showing more than 11,500 students involved as of October this year. Donald stressed that bullying causes lasting harm, including depression, anxiety, and a higher risk of suicidal behaviour, and called for collective action from families, schools, communities, and government agencies, supported by existing programmes like the Education Ministry's BEST initiative. He also emphasised the importance of mandatory post-mortems in sudden or suspicious deaths under Sections 329 and 331 of the Criminal Procedure Code, saying these are key to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice. Donald welcomed the Attorney-General's Chambers' decision to hold a full inquest into Zara's death, expressing hope it would provide her family with clarity and peace of mind while serving as a turning point in addressing both bullying and investigative procedures. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Call to review juvenile offender laws and protect children's wellbeing
Published on: Thursday, August 14, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 14, 2025 By: Azmie Lim Text Size: Nagaraju at the press conference. LAHAD DATU: The government has been urged to review laws concerning juvenile offenders and introduce new measures to safeguard the wellbeing of the younger generation. Sabah Consumer Affairs and Protection Society (Caps) deputy president Datuk A Nagaraju, in a press conference on Thursday, said the Child Act 2001, in force since August 2002, was designed to protect the rights and welfare of children, but no longer fully reflects current realities. He said the age limit for juvenile offenders should be lowered from under 18 to under 15, noting that individuals eligible to vote should be mature enough to take responsibility for their actions. Nagaraju also proposed prohibiting children under 16 from owning social media accounts, with legal consequences for parents who allow access, as part of a proposed 'Childhood Reform' to protect them from online risks. He added that Caps recommends a single school session from 8am to 4.30pm to keep children engaged in structured learning and healthy activities. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? WhatsApp says Russia is trying to block it
FILE PHOTO: Whatsapp logo is seen in this illustration taken, August 22, 2022. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo MOSCOW (Reuters) -WhatsApp said Russia was trying to block its services because the social media messaging app owned by Meta Platforms offered people's right to secure communication, and vowed to continue trying to make encrypted services available in Russia. Russia has started restricting some Telegram and WhatsApp calls, accusing the foreign-owned platforms of failing to share information with law enforcement in fraud and terrorism cases. "WhatsApp is private, end-to-end encrypted, and defies government attempts to violate people's right to secure communication, which is why Russia is trying to block it from over 100 million Russian people," WhatsApp said in a statement. "We will keep doing all we can to make end-to-end encrypted communication available to people everywhere, including in Russia." (Reporting by Reuters; editing by Guy Faulconbridge)
