Jamshedpur: The ruling alliance party, Congress, has appealed to the Hemant Soren govt to take the initiative for the Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservations in educational institutions across the state.
Making the appeal, state Congress in-charge Koppula Raju said Article 15 (5) of the Constitution allows the state to make provisions for the betterment of socially and economically backward classes, concerning their admission to educational institutions.
While speaking at the Samvidhan Bachao Rally at Sakchi on Sunday, the Congress leader said the state govt must take the initiative without any delay.
Raju also said party leader
Rahul Gandhi
played a pivotal role in driving the Narendra Modi govt at the Centre to give its nod for the caste census.
"From the streets to Parliament, Rahul Gandhi fought for the rights of the OBC community which forced the Modi government to bow before the legitimate demand and agree to a census of the backward classes," Raju said, addressing the crowd at the Sakchi parking zone.
Stating that protecting the Constitution is the responsibility of all Indians, Raju further said, "Congress has taken the lead but it is the responsibility of all citizens to participate in the campaign to uphold the democratic values, principles and constitutional provisions."
During the rally, the party passed a resolution praising the armed forces for their commendable feat in 'Operation Sindoor'. The bravery and courage demonstrated by the soldiers ensured a strong military response to Pakistan, he added.
Speaking on the occasion, state Congress president, Keshav Mahato Kamlesh, said the Modi govt failed to align with the spirit of the Constitution, claiming that it was grossly undermined by the Centre with its activities in the last 11 years.
The rally was necessitated to make the common people know how the Modi govt is violating the Constitution, Kamlesh said.
Top party leaders of the state attended the rally organised by the East Singhbhum district Congress committee.

Bill introduced by Amit Shah is a conspiracy to destabilise non-BJP governments: Dipankar Bhattacharya

Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) General Secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya on Wednesday (August 20, 2025) said that 'The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill 2025' introduced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah is a well-planned conspiracy to destabilise non-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) governments in States and obstruct their functioning. Also Read | No foreign voters in Bihar SIR list; Modi brings divisive agenda: CPI(ML) Addressing the press in the State capital, Mr. Bhattacharya said the Bill is the death knell for India's Constitutional federal system and parliamentary democracy. 'According to this Bill, if a Minister is sentenced to five years on any charge and remains in jail for 30 days, he will have to step down from the post. Obviously, the Prime Minister or the BJP ministers will not be sent to jail. This provision is a well-planned conspiracy to destabilise non-BJP governments and not to allow them to function,'Mr. Bhattacharya said. He further said, 'After the misuse of the ED [Enforcement Directorate], the CBI [Central Bureau of Investigation], the NIA [National Investigation Agency] and converting Governor offices into BJP offices, now if this law comes into effect, the existence of non-BJP governments will become almost impossible. Every citizen who believes in democracy, the Constitution and the rule of law should strongly oppose this Bill.' Mr. Shah today introduced three Bills in the Lok Sabha to provide a legal framework for the removal of the Prime Minister, Union Ministers, Chief Ministers and Ministers in States and Union Territories who are 'arrested and detained in custody on account of serious criminal charges' Praise for V-P candidate Mr. Bhattacharya also welcomed the selection of Justice B. Sudershan Reddy for the post of Vice-President by the Opposition asserting that it's a positive and timely decision. Praising him, Mr. Bhattacharya explained that Mr. Reddy's track record in protecting the Constitution and human rights has been remarkable. He added that Mr. Reddy had declared the Salwa Judum campaign in Chhattisgarh as unconstitutional. He also stressed that this country does not need a person associated with the RSS [Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh] ideology. Speaking about the ongoing 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Mr. Bhattacharya said that the march is becoming a mass movement to protect democracy and the Constitution, and is also garnering widespread public support. Lashing out at the Election Commission (EC), Mr. Bhattacharya said the names of migrant workers are being deleted, citing the excuse of Bangladeshi infiltrators. 'Any leader of Gujarat becomes a voter of Bihar, but the names of Biharis who go to Gujarat to earn money are being deleted. There is also Form 6A for NRIs but no form for the migrant workers of Bihar,'Mr. Bhattacharya said. He alleged that scams are going on as the names of lakhs of people are found without addresses, and the ECI is calling them homeless voters. Mr. Bhattacharya asked the EC how the verification happened and how it communicated with the voters. He also flagged the objections raised by the political parties and Booth Level Agents (BLAs), which have been denied by the EC, saying the political parties have registered no such claims. Attacking the Nitish Kumar-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the State, the CPI-(ML) leader said that the government has been a burden for twenty years and had to be uprooted from the power.

‘Reddy a fearless champion of equality': Mallikarjun Kharge introduces V-P candidate to Opp leaders

Calling upon every MP to support former SC judge B Sudershan Reddy for the Vice President's post, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said his nomination stood as the Opposition's firm commitment to restoring steadily declining 'fairness, impartiality, and dignity to the functioning of the Rajya Sabha'. Reddy, who will be the joint Opposition candidate, was formally introduced to senior leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Sharad Pawar among others, at a meeting in the Central Hall of Parliament on Wednesday. At a time when the integrity of India's democratic institutions was 'facing unprecedented challenges', Kharge said Justice Reddy's contest against NDA's C P Radhakrishnan was 'an ideological battle for the soul of our nation'. 'This Vice-Presidential election is not merely a contest for an office; it is an ideological battle for the soul of our nation. While the ruling party has chosen the ideology of RSS, we uphold the Constitution and its values as our guiding light,' he said on the eve of the last day of filing nominations for the polls scheduled on September 9. Terming him a 'towering figure in Indian jurisprudence', Justice Reddy, Kharge said, was 'renowned for his unwavering commitment to justice' and had been a fearless champion of social, economic, and political equality, delivering landmark judgments that have 'strengthened the fabric of our democracy'. Referring to the three Bills introduced by Home Minister Amit Shah in Parliament on Wednesday, he said, 'Constitutional Amendment Bills that undermine the core values of parliamentary democracy and federalism are being introduced in subterfuge at the fag end of the session, leaving no scope for meaningful debate or scrutiny.' 'Over the last 11 years, we have witnessed the blatant misuse of parliamentary majority to arm the autonomous agencies like ED, I-T, and CBI with draconian powers to target Opposition leaders. Now, these new Bills are set to become instruments in the hands of the ruling party to further undermine and destabilise democratically elected governments in the states,' he added.

NDA candidate Radhakrishnan files nomination papers for vice presidential election

Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan, the NDA Vice-Presidential candidate, on Wednesday filed his nomination papers in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Modi, flanked by Radhakrishnan and senior leaders from the ruling alliance, handed over four sets of nomination papers to Rajya Sabha Secretary General P C Mody, the returning officer for the election which is scheduled for early next month. Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh (from the JD-U) were the lead proposers. With the numbers tilted in the NDA's favour — it has 423 MPs in both Houses of Parliament, well ahead of the winning mark of 392 votes (the electoral college comprises) of 782 MPs — sources said the occasion was marked by good-natured banter and humour. According to BJP sources, Radhakrishnan has begun canvassing to seek support from ruling NDA MPs and a 'larger outreach' will get underway following the conclusion of parliament's Monsoon session on Thursday. Senior leaders from other NDA allies such as the LJP's Chirag Paswan, JDS's HD Kumaraswamy, RLD's Jayant Chaudhary and TDP's Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu, in addition to BJP bigwigs including J P Nadda, Nitin Gadkari and Bhupender Yadav, were also part of what a BJP source called a 'successful display of a united front' by almost the entirety of the BJP-led NDA Union Cabinet. The PM broke the ice when he said 'bada gambhir mahaul hai' as he entered the chamber of the Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha for the official formalities, triggering smiles. According to a senior NDA leader, a lighthearted moment that unfolded during the process was related to the Rs 15,000 proposers' fee. 'The PM asked the Secretary General whether there was a fee, to which the Secretary General replied in the affirmative and informed that it was Rs 15,000. A senior BJP leader told the PM that the fee had been paid,' a source said. In response to this, the source added, Secretary General Mody sought to clarify that the amount would not be returned in case the candidate won, triggering laughs. 'Along with Ministers, Party colleagues and NDA leaders, accompanied Thiru CP Radhakrishnan as he filed his nomination for the post of Vice President of India. The NDA family is confident that he will be an outstanding VP and will enrich our journey towards national progress,' the PM said in a post on X later. The 67-year-old RSS veteran, credited with laying the foundation of the party in his home state of Tamil Nadu, called on former Prime Minister HD Devegowda in addition to interacting with legislators from Maharashtra and Goa on Wednesday evening. According to BJP sources, while Radhakrishnan's campaign manager, the Defence Minister, has spoken to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, and his election manager, Parliamentary Affairs minister Kiren Rijiju, has spoken to Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi seeking support for the unanimous election of the NDA's candidate. 'Another round of outreach' seeking support for him will take place till September 9.
