Commanders cleared to build new stadium in D.C.

Reuters12 hours ago
August 1 - After nearly three decades of playing in Maryland, the Washington Commanders have the green light to build a new $3.7 billion stadium in D.C. that should bring them back to the nation's capital by 2030.
The D.C. Council voted 9-3 on Friday to ratify the deal between the city and the NFL team. The site of the new 174-acre complex will be the same as RFK Stadium, which remains in place even though the team moved out prior to the 1997 season.
"This is a historic moment," Commanders managing partner Josh Harris said in a statement. "This project is about more than delivering a world-class stadium worthy of our players, fans and the region. It's about revitalizing a critical part of our city, creating thousands of jobs and unlocking long-term economic benefits for the District. We look forward to working with our fans, residents, community leaders and elected officials to deliver on this vision."
The franchise enjoyed its finest years at the RFK site, which opened in 1961 as District of Columbia Stadium. During the team's 36 seasons at RFK, it won Super Bowls VII, XXII and XXVI while appearing in two more and earning eight other playoff appearances.
Since former owner Dan Snyder moved the team to now-Northwest Stadium in Landover, Md., in 1997, Washington has amassed just seven playoff appearances in 28 years. Last season's run to the NFC title game was the Commanders' first push past the divisional round since 1991.
Snyder's decision to sell his team in 2022 - a move encouraged by the NFL - helped pave the way for the franchise's return to D.C. In addition, Harris indicated his willingness to foot more of the bill than most owners.
According to details of the deal, the Commanders are expected to handle $2.7 billion of the stadium's cost along with any overruns. The District of Columbia will pay $1 billion, but much of that is expected to be recouped over the long haul in taxes and other revenue streams.

Backstroke queen McKeown pulls off another double

Aug 2 (Reuters) - World record holder Kaylee McKeown underlined her status as the undisputed queen of backstroke swimming as she added the 200 meters gold to her triumph in the 100 at the world championships in Singapore on Saturday. Once again it was American Regan Smith looking to take down McKeown, only to be reeled in on the last lap as the Australian dominator clocked 2:03.33, the third fastest swim of all time. It was nearly a second better than Smith (2:04.29), who had taken silver behind McKeown in the 100 and 200 at the Paris Olympics and was runner-up to her again in the 100 in Singapore. Just like in Paris, McKeown's win came straight after compatriot Cameron McEvoy stormed to his second 50 freestyle title in 21.14 seconds, becoming the oldest Australian swimming world champion at the age of 31. Fastest off the blocks, McEvoy once again denied Ben Proud (21.26) gold, having beaten the Briton to the Olympic title by a fingertip in Paris exactly a year ago. A new dad since Paris, McEvoy thanked his wife Maddi and gave a shout-out to his baby boy Hartley. "It's a very different life," he said. "I've got to navigate it, I'll figure it out. But it's cool to have that at home and still be here doing what I love." Gretchen Walsh kept the U.S. team medal haul ticking upwards with a dominant victory in the 50 butterfly, adding to her 100 title in Singapore. Touching the wall in 24.83 seconds, Walsh was nearly half a second better than runner-up Alex Perkins, who set an Australian record of 25.31.

Pirates' Paul Skenes faces Rockies, looks to continue torrid stretch

August 2 - The Pittsburgh Pirates aren't in the postseason hunt, but they do have a reason for optimism every fifth day when Paul Skenes takes the mound. Skenes (6-8) will take his majors-best 1.83 ERA into hitter-friendly Coors Field in Denver on Saturday afternoon when Pittsburgh continues its series against the Colorado Rockies. Skenes brings a 13-inning scoreless streak into the matchup against Colorado left-hander Austin Gomber (0-5, 6.28) on Saturday. Skenes will face the Rockies for the first time in his brief career and will try to restore some order for the Pirates, who squandered a 9-0 first-inning lead and lost 17-16 to Colorado on Friday night. Pittsburgh allowed a season high in runs and hits (22) en route to seeing its five-game winning streak snapped. The Pirates will aim for their fourth straight series victory. Pittsburgh has won eight of its last 10 games and held opponents to one run or fewer in seven games before Friday night during the stretch. Skenes has led the way with 14 quality starts and hasn't given up a run since the fourth inning of a loss at Minnesota on July 11. He has thrown six shutout innings in his last two outings -- wins over Arizona and Detroit -- as he gets ready for the August schedule. "August is tough. Mentally, physically," Skenes said after beating the Diamondbacks 6-0 on Sunday. "I think a lot of July, I've been trying to get ready for that. So [I] just got to keep doing that - keep up my body in good positions and go out there and keep pitching well." Gomber is tasked with slowing the Pirates, who have 33 runs over the last five games. Gomber is not only looking for his first win of the season, he is trying for his first career victory against Pittsburgh. In nine appearances -- five starts -- against the Pirates, he is 0-3 with a 6.44 ERA. The Rockies have continued with their youth movement, with 11 players making their major league debut this season, and Warming Bernabel is making his opportunity count. He played his first big-league game in Baltimore last week and has at least one hit in all six games he has played and has homered three times. His latest blast came Friday night, a three-run shot that gave Colorado hope early in the game. He finished with four hits, collected his first career triple and is batting .458 in 24 at-bats. It has been a positive in a Rockies season that could set a record for futility. Colorado has 29 wins and needs to finish 13-40 to avoid matching the 2024 Chicago White Sox for the modern-era record for losses with 121. "I see immediate confidence coming up from the minor leagues," Rockies interim manager Warren Schaeffer said Friday. "I see smooth. It looks like he knows what he wants, like he's hunting (specific pitches) up there. It looks like he knows what he's doing. "It's a breath of fresh air to see that coming up from the minor leagues, ready to hit like that." --Field Level Media

Ruben Amorim confirms Bryan Mbeumo's Man Utd debut and gives biggest transfer hint yet over problem position

BRYAN MBEUMO will make his Manchester United bow on Sunday - and Ruben Amorim can't wait to see him in a red shirt. Cameroon ace Mbeumo sealed his £71m move to Old Trafford hours before United set off for the US tour. 4 4 4 The former Brentford man has been playing fitness catch-up at United's Chicago base, missing the opening two games of the Premier League Summer Series. But Amorim confirmed Mbeumo, 22, will be handed a debut against Everton in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in 'The Big Peach'. The United boss said: 'Bryan is going to play. 'I'm really excited to see him playing and what he can give to our team.' Mbeumo and £62.5m Brazilian Matheus Cunha will be key elements of the new-look United, although it is unclear if the former Wolves man's minor fatigue issue will allow them to be partnered in the second attacking line against ex-Old Trafford boss David Moyes' men. The prospect of the pair in harness will not help Moyes, who admits his Toffees are 'nowhere near ready' for the start of the Prem season in a fortnight. Amorim admitted he is looking to add to his squad, with Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko the No.1 target. But the Portuguese gave the biggest hint yet that he is expecting under-pressure Andre Onana to start the new campaign in goal. 4 Onana has yet to play in United's pre-season because of a hamstring injury but is now getting close to fitness and could even feature in next week's Old Trafford friendly with Fiorentina. Amorim added: 'We are always looking to improve the team. Mbeumo completes Man Utd move "And we have some characteristics that we would like to have. 'But again, it depends on the market. It depends on the sales. We'll see. But I'm really happy. 'When you talk about Andre, you can see the goalkeepers, all of them, are leaner. Onana is going to be better this year. 'I was really excited to see the team playing the last game against Bournemouth. 'You maybe looked at the starting side and thought 'nothing to see today'. 'But I was so excited because I know we can do better. "So, I'm always excited, especially in this moment.'
