BCCI Takes Big Decision On Ajit Agarkar's Contract Just Ahead Of Asia Cup 2025: Report
'Under his tenure the Indian team had won titles and had seen transition (of the Tests and T20) too. The BCCI had extended his contract till June 2026 and he had accepted the offer a few months back,' a BCCI official told The Indian Express.
Earlier, Agarkar provided clarity on the management of star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, emphasising the team's long-term focus on keeping him fit and available for marquee events.
"I don't think there's any written plan at the moment," Agarkar said while addressing Bumrah's workload.
"Obviously, there's been a nice break after the England series as well. The team management, the physios, or the people concerned are always in touch. It's not just now. Even before his injury, we've tried to look after him because we know how valuable he is," he added.
Agarkar underlined that while international cricket treats every game as important, Bumrah's availability is especially crucial during high-profile tournaments.
"Clearly, we want him available for all the big games. I know international cricket, every game is a big game, but there are World Cups, there are Champions Trophies or big series like England or Australia, where you want him available all the time," he said.
On Bumrah's injury struggles in recent years, Agarkar stressed the extra attention given to his workload management.
"Most fast bowlers are monitored, and yes, because he's picked up an injury over the last two or three years, there's extra care taken on how unique and how special he is, and it won't change. It won't change whether it's this series or maybe the next six months," he added.
The chief selector further added that the call on Bumrah's participation will continue to depend on inputs from the medical team.
"As we go along, how he's feeling, when we require him as a team, which is probably the most important thing and along with the physios and the trainers, those things are monitored anyway, but we hope that he's available more often than not," he said.
India will kick off their campaign against the UAE on September 10, while the high-voltage game against Pakistan is scheduled for September 14, with both fixtures set to be played in Dubai. India will play their final group stage fixture against Oman on September 19 in Abu Dhabi.

There is no bigger name than BCCI in cricket fraternity as of now, given the popularity of cricket in India. Every company wants to have some type of partnership with BCCI as it can prove to be the best way to put their names in the widespread market. However, the biggest partnership position that anyone can hold with BCCI is being the team sponsor, which means every match the team plays, players will wear the jersey with the team sponsor's name on it, putting the company in the best possible advertising position. However, as good as this deal sounds, the history behind it has been somewhat cursed in the 21st century, as all of India's team sponsors since 2001 have found themselves in some sort of legal or financial dispute after partnering with the BCCI. The latest addition to this list is Dream11, which became India's team sponsor in 2023 and is currently finding itself in a precarious situation after the Indian government passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025 on August 21, putting a blanket ban on all real-money gaming apps. How the new bill impacts Dream11 According to the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025, any app or game that involves real-time money — i.e. spending money in order to earn more money in real time — shall be banned completely, irrespective of being a luck-based or skill-based game. Dream11 comes under the skill-based section where consumers make their fantasy team and put money on it with hopes of earning more if the players perform well. This means, given the nature of the current services provided by Dream11, the new Bill will put a permanent ban on the app. When will the ban be enacted The new gaming Bill has passed in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha and now only needs the President's nod for the Bill to become an Act, after which all real-money gaming apps including Dream11 will be immediately banned from running their operations. BCCI jinx continues With Dream11 now facing legal trouble, they are part of an unwanted list of BCCI team sponsors to find themselves in some sort of operational trouble following their partnership with the Indian cricket team. But what does the complete list look like? Take a look. Sahara: 2001 to 2013 For over a decade, Sahara's logo was synonymous with the Indian cricket jersey, from the heartbreak of the 2003 World Cup final to the glory of 2011. Despite the massive visibility, Sahara's financial empire crumbled. After raising about ₹24,000 crore from 30 million investors, the group faced SEBI action for regulatory violations. The Supreme Court ordered deposits, but non-compliance led to Subrata Roy's arrest in 2014. Even after his death in 2023, efforts to recover funds for investors continue. Star India: 2014 to 2017 Star India replaced Sahara, coinciding with the rise of modern icons like Kohli and Rohit. The brand's presence on the jersey symbolised a new cricketing era, but business fortunes soured. Walt Disney-owned Star faced scrutiny for abuse of market dominance, prompting a Competition Commission probe. Meanwhile, Hotstar's struggles forced a merger with Jio, leaving the once-dominant broadcaster weakened. Oppo (2017 to 2020) Oppo signed a massive ₹1,079 crore deal but exited early due to poor returns. Legal battles over patent disputes with Nokia and InterDigital further dented its standing. Byju's stepped in, honouring Oppo's financial terms, but soon spiralled into its own troubles. By 2023, the BCCI had moved NCLT over a ₹158 crore default, adding to the edtech giant's mounting financial woes. Byju's (2020 to 2022) Initially hailed as the saviour of BCCI's sponsorship deal, Byju's soon became another cautionary tale. Payment defaults, insolvency petitions, and regulatory scrutiny left the once-celebrated edtech unicorn fighting for survival, despite a temporary truce with the cricket board in court. Dream11 (2023 to Present) Dream11, the current jersey sponsor until 2026, faces its own share of uncertainty. With the BCCI wary of links to betting and real-money gaming, Dream11's legality has been under review. The company was also hit with tax demands over alleged GST evasion of ₹1,200 crore earlier. Though one notice was withdrawn, fresh scrutiny from GST authorities is expected, leaving its sponsorship future in question. Is this the end of the road for Dream11? The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025 surely puts the main operation of Dream11 to rest, but it does not actually mean the end of the road for the fantasy gaming giant, as they can still keep running their apps with a subscription model where players can pay some money to try their hand at fantasy gaming without any real money in return. However, it is unlikely to keep them in the position to stay as BCCI team sponsors, as their revenue will take a huge hit. But how this will actually impact their partnership with BCCI, we will have to wait some time to get the final answer.

New fitness test for Team India: What is the rugby-centric Bronco Test Indian cricketers must pass?
The Bronco test, introduced by strength and conditioning coach Adrian le Roux, doesn't replace the existing Yo-Yo test and the 2km time trial but serves to complement them and focus primarily on the helping the fast bowlers with their endurance. The new Bronco test will focus on building player endurance, particularly for fast bowlers. What exactly is it and how does it differ from the Yo-Yo Test? Let's find out… For starters, the Bronco test does not replace the existing Yo-Yo test and the 2-kilometre time trial. India head coach Gautam Gambhir and strength and conditioning coach Adrian le Roux have instead introduced the Bronco test, originally developed for rugby which measures aerobic endurance and pushes cardiovascular limits. What is the Bronco test? The Bronco test is a high-intensity aerobic running drill which involves shuttle runs of 20, 40 and 60 metres respectively. So an athlete must run 20 metres and cover as much distance on the way back, totaling 40 metres. Going by this rule, the player effectively covers 80m and 120m respectively for the other two shuttle runs. The three distances form a set, and in the Bronco test, a player must complete five sets, effectively covering 1,200 metres, without taking rest. The time taken to complete the five sets is then noted as a measure of a player's fitness, with the team currently setting six minutes as the benchmark. According to The Indian Express, several players have already undergone the Bronco test at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Additionally, le Roux had recommended the test in response to concerns over players, especially fast bowlers, spending too much time in gyms instead of endurance training. PTI The Yo-Yo test, which was introduced by then-strength and conditioning coach Shankar Basu in 2016, primarily focuses on recovery and agility while the Bronco test assesses continuous aerobic endurance. The yo-yo test involves running between two cones placed 20 metres apart with increasing pace at each level, with players allowed a 10-second recovery period after every 40 metres. The benchmark in this test is set at 17.1. The 2km time trial, meanwhile, sets different time limits depending on roles – fast bowlers must complete it in 8 minutes and 15 seconds, with other players getting an additional 15 seconds. No bilaterals with Pak, says government; green light for Asia Cup
India and Pakistan will not participate in any bilateral sporting events, but the Indian cricket team will be allowed to compete in the upcoming multi-nation Asia Cup, a source in the Sports Ministry confirmed on Thursday. The Asia Cup will feature high-profile India-Pakistan matches scheduled for 14 and possibly 21 September in Dubai, with the final on 29 September. The tournament will follow the T20 International format ahead of next year's T20 World terms of bilateral sports, Indian teams will not compete in Pakistan, nor will Pakistani teams be permitted to play in India," the source stated. The source added, "We will not prevent the Indian cricket team from participating in the Asia Cup as it is a multilateral event. Pakistan will not be allowed on Indian soil for bilateral competitions, but we will respect multilateral events in line with the Olympic Charter."India's new policy towards international sporting events further elaborates on this approach: "India's approach to sports events involving Pakistan reflects its overall policy in dealing with that country. Regarding bilateral sports events held in each other's countries, Indian teams will not participate in competitions in Pakistan, nor will Pakistani teams be permitted to play in India. However, with regard to international and multilateral events, whether held in India or abroad, India is guided by the practices of international sports bodies and the interests of its own sportspersons. It is also relevant to consider India's emergence as a credible venue for hosting international sports events." "Accordingly, Indian teams and individual players will take part in international events that include teams or players from Pakistan. Similarly, Pakistani players and teams will be allowed to participate in such multilateral events hosted by India. To position India as a preferred destination for hosting international sporting events, the visa process for sportspersons, team officials, technical personnel, and office-bearers of International Sports Governing Bodies shall be simplified. Specifically, office-bearers of these bodies will be granted multi-entry visas on a priority basis for the duration of their official tenure, subject to a maximum period of five years. This will facilitate their smooth movement into and within the country, in accordance with international norms. Due protocol and courtesies, as per established practice, shall be extended to the Heads of International Sports Governing Bodies."The policy also highlights India's emergence as a credible venue for international sports and commits to simplifying visa procedures for sportspersons, team officials, technical personnel, and office-bearers of international sports governing visas will be granted on a priority basis to office-bearers for the duration of their official tenure, subject to a maximum of five years, facilitating smooth movement within India according to international norms.
