Mum might say - Liam Gallagher on the ‘coolest woman on the planet'
The Oasis frontman also said his Mayo-born mum is an 'absolute diamond', adding: 'Everything that is good about me I definitely got from her.'
Peggy Gallagher's no-nonsense attitude to her sons' career choice was captured in Liam's BBC documentary As It Was, where they were filmed chatting in the living room of her council house.
'Do you remember that time you sat out in the kitchen and told me you were going to be a singer?' she recalled. 'And I says to him, to be a singer? I says: 'You can't sing!'' When Liam retorted that he was going to be famous, his mother shot back: 'You want to bloody hurry up and be famous then.' Peggy Gallagher with sons Noel, Paul and Liam in the 1970s. When he was 12 years old, Peggy bought a guitar for Noel – who was 'obsessed with music' – from a Kay's catalogue and paid for him to have lessons.
Liam became interested in music when he was 15 after being expelled from school for fighting.
The star said he discovered his musical ability while singing along to the Top 40 hits on his mother's radio. Liam Gallagher with his mother Peggy in 2006. Pic: Stephen Butler/REX/Shutterstock
Peggy who had raised her three wilful sons alone as a single mother would go on to be their loyal and proud fan, appearing on The Late Late Show after a concert in Cork where she disputed any suggestion the band was 'too loud'.
Noel told then Late Late Show presenter Ryan Tubridy: 'We offered to buy her a house but where we're from in Manchester, she's got seven sisters and about five of them live about a 15-minute walk from each other, so she wasn't going to move.'
He added: 'The one thing she requested was, we had a garden gate which was really squeaky, and she said: 'If you could just change the gate.'
'We bought her a brand-new gate with a gold number 5 on it and she was happy as Larry after that.'
